He did a lot of outstanding films, but 'Das Boot' is of course the reference here.

Dived, never to surface again. Praised for being the most economic, cost-aware blockbuster director in business: he is said to never have exceeded the projected cost plans, but meant the numbers he gave for the costs, never had to ask for additional funding. At least it was so until some years ago, when I red this. Thats professionalism, no matter whether one likes the films or not.

Watched the Making of again, astound attention to detail. There's never been a director who worked this hard for total authenticity, and the movie shows it.

^ I just watched Das Boot over the weekend. I have two versions, one in English and the other in the Original German with English subtitles. Both of them are Director cut versions. As an added bonus, I watched the enemy below with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens. Both movie are excellent but Das Boot is a masterpiece. :yep:
