French sailor survives 16 hours in capsized boat in Atlantic
Is the headlines in the article from BBC.
Was it luck or had this sailor some knowledge that saved his life ?
The sea was rough and the sun had gone down, so the rescue team attached buoyancy balloons to the boat to stop it from sinking and waited until morning.

I would say modern technology saved his life. The article states “his boat sent a distress signal” I’m assuming they mean Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacon. Which when registered transmit not only a location but the vessel name, owner and other particulars.

Why not both?
You're right
It was foremost the technologies on his sailing ship that in first place saved his life and a combination of luck and knowledge made him survive these 16 hours under his ship where he had used the cabin.

Luck does, however, seem to favor those who are prepared.
