I got a new 144mhz monitor and SH4 was running fine. Then the monitor had a 'power' failuire and I cant reboot it, so I re-installed my 'old' ASUS 60mhz and SH4 went stupid. I have SH4 on Disk and can re-install it easily enough but my question(s) are these:
Should I download the Steam Version? Will it be better? Will it be more stable AND will it absorb the JSGME mods? Finally how much 'more modern' is the Steam version??
Or simply. stick to the original disk?

I have access to both Ubi's 'Gold" version of SH4 which is straight up v1.5, as well as Steam (but.. note, make sure when you grab it from there, that it is indeed v1.5 as they do also offer up the v1.4 one, too.
As for it being modern... that'd be a solid no... but, that aside, it is relatively stable, as it goes... overall.
It is about the same as what you have on disk... only difference being... if that disk gets messed up... well... you're out the game.. where as Steam or even Ubi... it's digital download, so no disk to have to worry about getting messed up.
Worth it, if you don't mind the nominal fee to have access to it... aka paying for it.
I picked up SH3, 4, (both v1.4 & 1.5) as well as SH5 all for around $21 & some change. That was a couple of years back.. to be frank, & by now.. don't know off hand what that would run, but wouldn't figure it to be much more... in fact, it may be less... considering how long in the tooth, 3 & 4 are getting.
Hope this info helps... :shucks: :yep:

p.s.
I have access through both of the aforementioned places, by the way... :shucks:

Thanks Mad, I will go for the steam Wolves of the Pacific. As you right say, I will always have the digital backup. 1.5 is U Boat, as much as I admire their heroism, I am NOT sinking my own ships :Kaleun_Salute: Appreciate your time.

I got SH4 off steam but it wont accept the mods via JSGME The map is original with huge anchors, and I have loaded historical maps but it does not show.

You, :hmmm: by chance don't have the library for Steam, set up in either of Program files locations... I pray. :o
Cause if so, that would likely be part of the issue.
2ndly, would be of not having gone into properties of the SH4.exe & changing it from 'read only' status... before running it the 1st time.
Modding that 1 copy is fine... if you don't plan on doing more than that 1 mod set... but... I have worked out a ways & means to run the initial install, leave that alone & make copies of it to run as modded copies, according to whatever mod set you wanna run with.

Here is a link to a thread discussing a problem playing modded versions of the Steam version of Silent Hunter:
https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=2616423
I had this problem too and ended up having two installations of SH4 - a vanilla version located under 'X:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Silent Hunters wolves of the pacific' and a modded version of SH4 located in its own folder ('MyFolder') outside of 'Program Files'.
I never play using the vanilla version but it is there as a backup if something goes awry with my modded versions of SH4.
Btw I remember that I had to register the MyFolder version with Steam as a non-Steam game. So Steam runs first and then starts the SH4 version in MyFolder just like it would a regular steam game.
And just in case you haven't checked it -
a) in the SH4 options menu is a sub-menu called 'Graphics'. If your graphics settings (i.e. screen resolution) on your new monitor were very different from the old one, this could be the problem. So maybe you need to manually update the graphics settings on a config file back to the old settings.

Sammy - ref the graphics, yes, I have had a hell of a job adjusting the graphics to try and get full screen again. The natural default setting for the monitor is 1920 -1080 but if I do that the bottom of the SH4 screen loes its control panels. Very frustrating. In the end, last night, I uninstalled SH4 steam and put the disk back in and started again trying to get it working fully. I can run the vanilla ver, but its not taking JSGME mods either.
I dont understand why SH4 should be giving so much trouble when all others including a modded Freelancer (2003) still works perfectly as does Fallout 4 and others.
