So I have recently been trying to learn silent hunter 4 (starting on full realism because I’m a masochist) and was doing fine except my torpedo attacks were terrible. Maybe a 25% hit rate. Then I stumbled on a YouTube tutorial for the Dick O’Kane method and decided to try it out for a patrol. 12 shots 12 hits and 30,000 tons later and my S boat has never felt this good. So good on you whoever you were Dick.

Someone named the firing method you speak of after Richard H. O Kane.

Rear Admiral Richard H. "Dick" O Kane was a WW II US submarine commander and Medal of Honor Recipient . Possibly the best actually terms of tonnage sunk by a single commander. O Kane was Executive Officer on the legendary WAHOO and then Commanded the legendary TANG, rated as top boat in tonnage sunk. O Kane was a POW for nearly a year and barely survived.

Also, his books "CLEAR THE BRIDGE!" (About his time on TANG) and "WAHOO! " (about the USS WAHOO) are excellent reads.

And now I know some cool history facts and have two books to read thank you.

Yes and interestingly enough, what you can learn from his books (and others) can often be applied to how operate in the sim and can see a difference using their tactics etc, esp in the mods.

I really like this method. I’ve been able to build on it as a foundation to try developing different styles. I like that it’s forgiving, straight forward, and efficient. Right now I’m hunting in the South Celebes Sea on my 4th patrol in a brand new shiny Balao and trying to work out a 100degree solution.
Some patrols I do apply the assisted targeting. I’ve got a good, solid crew. 😜. These boys are sharp!! They aren’t afraid to try some different approaches.
Good Hunting!

Rockin Robbins gave us three good attack profiles

The Dick O'Kane Attack

The John P. Cromwell Attack

The Vector Analysis Attack (my personal favorite) (in which the actual ranges don't matter... just the Course intercept angle and the periscope aiming bearing.)
... I used it to construct a spreadsheet for different torpedo speed / target speeds / Course Intercept Angle(s) / Periscope Lead Angle(s)
... very useful for quick medium range standoff attacks without waiting for specific course intercept angle(s) such as 45 or 90.

If I can find a way to upload the spreadsheet, I'll post it.

The aiming bearing is calculated by: "360-10º = 350" or it will depend of my intercept course relative to the target course?

My main dough is obtaining the aiming bearing, when reading this methods.

I ran a simulation for torpedo dud's.

I made 200 attacks at directly 90 degrees. I discounted any attack that wasn't directly 90 degrees. I had a 24% dud rate. Almost quarter of my attacks were dud's

For the next run I made 200 attacks at 85 degrees, again discounting any attack that wasn't directly 85 degrees. My dud rate was 15%.

I did the same run at 95 degrees. My dud rate was 16%.

Changing the angle of attack by 5 degrees reduced my dud rate by almost 10%. I no longer make attack's at 90% when at all possible.

One question I have for the O'Kane method is range. Is there a way to enter range in the TDC beyond 1250 yards?
