Basically, it is money, so you can purchase certain things, such as equipment (prior to date its available for everyone...example SJ surface radar eventually is free, but when first introduced, costs renown). In reality, the most renowned/successful boats and skippers would often get newest equipment first before it became standard.

You earn renown for completing patrol objectives. Each ship sunk is worth certain amount of renown. Sink a carrier, worth more than say a small merchant.


A large merchant, is worth more than a small merchant. Tankers, depending on the mod, may be worth more than any since they are priority (how I made it in TMO mod)

Don't forget, the renown plays a part in the Patrol Rating equation also...
