Midway is streaming on Peacock. Just a heads up.

While has its faults, still much better than the 2019 movie which was okay. I did appreciate the 2019 movie included the actions (to some degree, but poorly done) of the Nautilus.

My current campaign is with Nautilus, on third patrol on 3 June 1942, patrolling North West of Midway Island. Waiting to see if can locate the enemy carriers on morning of 4 June.

Yea, the acting was much more realistic, they just get too over the top with many of these new war movies.

i have to agree.
several ex-military friends have asked me if i had seen the new version of the old story.
so, i broke down and rented it for an evening.
my reaction...is the same as Lawrence's when asked about the quality of water from a certain well in the desert: it was o-k.
++
i prefer the '76 version on multiple levels but that just my opinion.

I prefer it as well. The way the story was told in the 1976 film, other than it left out the efforts of Nautilus and the pilots from Midway (aside from the PBY), was superior. When it came to battle, little things like the titles showing the name of the squadron commander...Waldron, Massey, Thach etc,
There is a version of the film which includes Coral Sea actions, unfortunately its rarely shown for some reason.

Even with the models and cut scenes of wrong planes, the attack scene on the carriers on June 4, with the radio chatter etc was exciting and well done.

The 2019 film was a CGI fest, they way planes were shot down and the numbers, the video game like explosions. The hokey way the Nautilus scene was done along with a portrayal of Dick Best that was offensive and unrealistic.

Upside, they actually made a movie about a important event, they strove for some historically accuracy, and had a great cast. Not on the level of the 1976 cast, but still pretty solid.

I would love to see a Spielberg/Hanks produced US WW II Pacific Submarine movie along lines of Saving Private Ryan/ Band of Brothers/The Pacific, but always worried how wrong it could turn out.

I remember seeing Midway ('76) in the movie theater, in 'SENSURROUND'.

I still remember the opening scene with the Text in the foreground and the sounds of the Wright R-2600's spooling up...

Dang blast it... now ya got Me, wanting to spool up Tora Tora Tora & follow that up with Midway (76 version... :yep:) which, have seen both it & that... remade version of it & much, much prefer the original to that... hack remake. Maybe even, add into the mix, "In harm's way"... in between them... though, I think that 1 would probably be better watched after Midway...

:hmmm: :hmmm:

Heard it from somewhere... "Read a good book, before Bollywood, destroys it making it into a movie."

Only 1 movie I know of, that they made based off a book, that was... decent, was "Hunt for Red October". They did execute, creative license in fudging some parts about a bit... but, other than that... was in My opinion... the only movie from book, that they pretty fairly followed the book on. For the most part... :hmmm:

Ah man, in Harm's Way is pretty much my favorite naval war film. What a cast and script, while fictional, clearly based off Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal campaign. The climatic surface battle scene was pretty well done, especially for the time.

Favorite WW2 Naval film? For me, it's The Gallant Hours. A War movie without showing a single battle. :yep:

Yea, the acting was much more realistic, they just get too over the top with many of these new war movies.C'mon now! All Quiet on the Western Front, 2019's 1917, and Kirk Douglas's Path's of Glory, & Audrey Tautau's French A Very Long Engagement were all decidedly "over the top" too, and did just fine!:O:
