View Full Version : Tonga Volcano Eruption
Tonga Volcano Erupted With Force More Than 500 Times The Hiroshima Atomic Bomb
The size — and deadly consequences — of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption that occurred last week has now begun to be quantified, with scientists estimating the power of the eruption, which satellites caught creating ripples in the atmosphere. According to local officials, the eruption had a radius of 260 kilometers (161.5 miles), and threw up ash 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) into the atmosphere, releasing massive amounts of energy.

This happened last Saturday Markus and the first aid via aircraft arrived today.
The first foreign aid planes have arrived in Tonga, bearing much-needed supplies for the Pacific nation which was left devastated by a volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami on Saturday.

Ah, right...no problem matey.
It was said the explosion could be heard around the world- I remember that I heard what sounded like an explosion Can't remember which day it was. Only that I thought wow what was that-Now I'll hear the sirene from firetrucks very soon-No such sound came and I forgot everything about this explosion, until I read about this eruption.
We have a shipyard here in our town-so it could very well have been there it came from.

Yeah, probably some shipyard fitter dropping a spanner in the dock bottom.
Taken from personal experience :03:
We had a tsunami watch for it on the Oregon coast for 1-3 foot waves. I saw one news post about some minor damage later that day.

Has the volcano already paid for the CO2 certificates it has consumed? Or is it the Germans again?
Here is little more science on this off scale eruption
Then came the catastrophic eruption on January 15. As seen in satellite images, only two tiny outcrops of rock now betray the beast lurking beneath the waves. But whether it happens in weeks or years, the volcano will rise again.

Upon review, in my expert opinion :O:, I rate this a 5 on the VEI scale similar in scope to Mt St Helens and Vesuvius...(the one that destroyed Pompeii-not the really big one!)! Vesuvius may properly be referred to as the 'ticking bomb' of Europe. The Tongan volcano has gone off in 1912, 1937, 1988, 2009, 2014-15, and studies reflect a much bigger one ca: 1100 AD. As with the VEI 6 blast of Krakatoa in 1886, we are awaiting the blast from 'Son of Krakatoa', which has already spewed forth on occasion. Tonga got lucky this time around. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/06/Volcanic_eruption_map.svg/975px-Volcanic_eruption_map.svg.png https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_Explosivity_Index https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anak_Krakatoa#:~:text=Anak%20Krakatau%20(English%3 A%20%22Child,destroyed%20the%20island%20of%20Kraka toa. RULE 1 in Vulcanology: It ain't 'if' it's 'when' !!
According to this wiki page It has been classified as a 5 on VEI scale
The eruption was described as as a once-in-a-thousand-years event for the Hunga caldera, and the event could rank as high as 5 on the volcanic explosivity index (VEI)

Wiki reads my posts!:yep::doh: Kudos to Tonga though. Tonga like Vanuatu and the Solomon islands on the World Risk Index to natural disasters, are the three countries most susceptible to disasters on this killer spinning mudball. Tonga's practice of tsunami drills bore marvelous dividends as the residents of the archipelago knew where to go at the eruption's first "boom", also heard in Denmark by a certain P.O.S.H cat lover"??! :O:The confirmed death toll is...3!!:yeah:...that's good government preparation by any standard!

Keep this ploy in mind when demolitioning Stone Mountain!:arrgh!:
I think they'll demo Stone Mountain without having to use a distraction. They might have a harder time with Mount Rushmore though. :arrgh!:
The left would not be happy if a volcanic eruption caused the Earth to cool a bit that's for sure. :har:

I heard it was caused by Reece eating a curry takeaway?:k_confused:
Then.....BOOM! curry upset the plumbing!
On a serious note, is there any "high ground" in Tonga? The videos of all those people at the beach recording it....:k_confused::doh:
