Trail blazing actor Sidney Poitier has passed away. Sidney won an Oscar in 1963, for Lilies of the Field. the first for a black actor. Sidney would go on to other movies. One of my favorites was " in the heat of the night. " 1967
Sidney would portray detective Virgil Tibbs opposite Rod Steiger.
Quote: Even though it won Best Picture, as well as four other statuettes, Poitier was not nominated. The film would go on to create a franchise for the Virgil Tibbs character, with the 1970 sequel “They Call Me, Mr. Tibbs!” and 1971’s “The Organization.” It was also the inspiration for a television series, running from 1988 to 1992. Carroll O'Connor portrays police chief Bill Gillespie.

Sidney was also a director. Sidney Poiter had such a commanding presence in films and will be missed.
Rest in peace and thanks for the great cinema and unforgettable characters.
