How do I remove the message 'engage, maintain current orders, or go to periscope depth' that comes up when enemy ship is spotted while cruising in high time compression? I do want the game to stop to 2x when a ship is sighted but I want it so I have to identify that it is a enemy vessel instead of a computer program auto identifying an enemy, makes it too easy that. U-boats had to get closer to identify lone merchants of their nationality, they couldn't tell like 12-16 kms away through binoculars that it was an enemy vessel or even armed for that matter at that distance. It would make my experience especially in early war that much more authentic to remove the automated message that comes up for enemy contacts.

Absolutely it's much more realistic not to have it, and it's quite simple to remove. You need to find GameplaySettings.cfg located in your Windows Documents folder: Documents/SH3/data/cfg

At the bottom you'll see:

[MiscSettings]
AlwaysAutotargeting=1,1,1,1,1;for warships, merchants, uboats, air and, respectively, land targets

Change all numbers to '1' as above. This makes default the "maintain current orders" command which essentially removes the message.

There is also a duplicate GameplaySettings.cfg located in the main SH3 directory in the cfg folder also. I don't think it's essential but it's just as well to modify this accordingly as well. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the guidance, I kept the last 3 at zero but changed warships and merchants to 1 so I don't get the pop up message.

Just realize that you'll keep careening at high time compression into the vicinity of whatever that contact is. Many people have lost their boat because shells started flying and sunk their boat before they could move their fingers to the stop time compression button.

Make sure to edit the time compression levels too.

post edit:Though I only have 4 (evenly accounted for at 25% each... :yep:) I still select 100% realism, & have it set to where I can have the 2WO or Weapons Officer, to run an ID on the ships while I view targets. & have it set to where the crew runs the TDC, freeing Me, the Kaleun up, to pick targets, decide what depth to run the torps, what speed & when to launch torps... & generally keep a lookout for danger...

I use 90% realism in my campaigns with external view still on in case I want some nice screenshots or vids.

[TIME COMPRESSION]
TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
LandProximity=128
CriticalDamage=1
CrewEfficiency=1
AirEnemyDetected=1
SoundEffects=4
CharacterAnim=8
SeaEnemyDetected=2
RadioReport=256
Particles=16
PrayState=32
HunterState=64
3DRender=512
Maximum=512

I use this with my 24 hr fatigue settings that I manually edited the GWX 8 hr in sh3 commander and renamed it too 24 hr.

I agree with that, as I like having the option to capture screenshots, as well. :yep:
