Norm Macdonald, Stand-Up and ‘Saturday Night Live’ Star, Dead at 61
Comedian had been privately battling cancer for nearly a decade

Norm Macdonald, the celebrated stand-up comedian and Saturday Night Live cast member, has died after a private battle with cancer, Deadline reports. He was 61.

Macdonald’s management company confirmed the comedian’s death to Deadline (they did not immediately return a request for comment from Rolling Stone). Macdonald had reportedly been battling cancer for nine years, but did not want to make the diagnosis public, according to his longtime producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra.

“He was most proud of his comedy,” Hoekstra said. “He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.”

Man, my first gut punch of the day. :k_confused:

Norm was the comedian's comedian. He would bomb on stage just to challenge himself. Watching his act was like like watching Spassky play chess, only you laughed more. :yeah:

Hopefully, they will bring back ALL of the Netflix talk shows with his long-suffering co-host Adam Eget. :har: Steve O'Donnell was the lead writer of the show but there was always something odd about the off-camera laughs. You had heard that laugh a thousand times if you watched late night TV and it was only a couple of years ago that David Spade confirmed that David Letterman was the show's producer.

That was when everything aligned and made perfect sense. The Netflix show was David and Norm's idea of the perfect talk show- by their standards. :yep:

Damn it. :nope:

Norm was one of my all time favorite comedians. Nothing was off-limits for him.

Rest in peace, Norm.

Many didn't know, but Norm's brother is Neil MacDonald, CBC News' senior Washington, D.C. correspondent.

Neil stole the show during a radio call-in interview with Norm and Super Dave Osborne (Bob Einstein).

Neil's joke:

A priest checks into a hotel and the desk clerk says, "Father, I hope you don't mind but one of the TV channels in your room is 24 hour porn".

"Is it disabled?" asks the priest.

"No, you creep, its regular porn."

:haha:

Damn, Norm was the best, he was amazingly funny and would not shy away from ripping sacred cows a new ass. He sure was hard on OJ and Bill Clinton's old lady.

Pretty much my favorite Norm moment, outside of his SNL work.
