View Full Version : A desperate, bloody war in Texas

I live in an rural area that is surrounded by woods and fields, the few houses are spaced out with lots of room. Naturally, wild animals like racoons, armadillos and deer make forays into the area under the cover of darkness. I don't mind that but I do have a problem with wild feral hogs, they come in and root up the yards, turning it into a scarred, muddy wasteland. I put up a game camera and the very next night...

here porky here porky pow not many neighbors im sure they wouldn't mind the pow but if so get a bow or get some traps cover with grass put some signs out so people wont go though the area if you got dogs figure a way to keep them out of it course when the trap nails their foot they going go hog wild smack in the head with a sledge hammer but that a good thing about living in a country setting unless there a game warden around or a nosey neighbor you can get away with stuff take into garage clean buried skin what-not then they can't prove you didnt get the meat from a shop or store

Berlin. Capitol of the hog republic. Its a miracle that not more violent clashes happen there. When i say they roam districts of the city by hundreds of animals, its not an exaggeration. Often in daylight. In populated streets. In traffic. Like other cities have ducks in the parks.
Clever animals. Vefy intelligent, they can assess situations very well. I like them, though not in these Berlin ways of life.
Its just like with bears. Never get positioned between a mum and her kids. That reads trouble.

You would be surprised what a modern air rifle can do these days. Even a poor man’s Hatsan .25 cal behind the ear at 15 yards could drop that critter dead in its tracks. Silent But Deadly.

Yeah, that's a good idea, Les. I think a crossbow would do the trick. And it is legal to kill feral hogs all year, day or night.

Considering the size of feral hogs in Texas (100-400 lbs.) I don't think I would use anything smaller than a .243 since you want to kill them, not wound them.
You could always trap them and shoot them at your leisure after Sunup.

Jeezus, old naked dudes and wild pigs on the beach! That's just messed up. :o
Seriously, 5 to 10,000 is not too bad, but as you know, they reproduce rapidly, almost a quickly as rabbits. In a few years you may see a lot more pigs.
Even though hunters and trappers are killing approximately 30 percent of the hog population in Texas annually, hog numbers are still growing by about 20 percent each year. Biologists and wildlife managers estimate that 70 percent of the hogs in the state will have to be killed each year just to maintain the population and even more must be killed to actually start reducing their numbers. Unfortunately, hog hunting and trapping are already going nearly full bore in Texas. Right now, these operations are taking less than half the number of hogs necessary to stop their explosive population growth and it's doubtful this can be achieved by those with trapping and hunting alone.
There's an estimated 6-9 million in the southern US, with 2.5 million in Texas alone.

You do not know the chaos troop the anarchic, extreme left-leaning and crime-loving layman-senate is. Its the worst of all the 16 state governments, and by a huge lead so.
Berlin is a dump. Plain and simple. Terrible incompetence meets ultra-left ideology.
Police officers flee in flocks from service in that state. They have their noses full. Since not all of them find equivalents in other states with whom they could change (a precondition), not few even accept to permanently quit. And you do nto have many candidates volunteering for moving to and doing service in Berlin anymore. It was not always that bad. But now it is.
When I left West-Berlin 30 years ago, hogs were somewhat rare, btw.

https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=124428.msg1214363#msg1214363
The Max .25 he shows in a few pictures is now mine.
It's a semi-auto .25 cal BullPup style.
I've dropped Ground Hogs with my RainStorm .30 at 90 yards.
Head shots!
1 shot, 1 kill!
So they can and will drop big hogs with proper shot placement!

Neal, you might want to consider giving Jeff a call :)
I could hook you up with Texas Air Gunners that would LOVE to help you out!
Did you know if it's your land you could even sell Hog hunts?
To sell hunts you would need a hunting lease license.
If you allowed hunters and did not take any compensation you don't need that.
They would not even need a license if they have permission to hunt your property!
Right now I'm working on getting a AEA Zeus .72 cal for a Buffalo kill in Wyoming!
Here's the key to kills with Air Guns.
We know the limitations of our Guns. We NEVER take a wild body shot knowing full well our rounds have a limited amount of FPE at POI.
Good shooters ONLY take head shots to insure a quick and humane kill.
We study the intended target to know best placement of the used round.
One can, and many have, dropped Big Hogs with a simple .22 cal Break barrel!
https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=1069&pictureid=11984
How good are Air Gunners?
A recent example of shooting in Iowa.
I and a friend met south of Sioux City to plink targets.
We had cans of soda set up at 75 yards and exploded them with ease!
Some Powder Burner people showed up and mentioned "Those Guys are shooting 'BB Guns'!" And laughed.
As we sat there they wasted a butt load of ammo shooting at 2 foot targets at 30 and 40 yards and missing them about 90% of the time!
Given they were about 30 yards away I loudly said "I could take those weapons away from them before they could take my BB Gun!"
Guess who was real interested in our GUNS from that point forward?

Run from a pig? Texas is a stand your ground state and has some of the best BBQ pit masters in the U.S.
Must admit the first thing that came into my mind when I read the first comment was Asterix and his friend Obelix, who is a big lover of whole BBQ wild hogs.
Back to serious discussion.
We have some problem at the Danish German border. The Danish government has build a very long fence to prevent these wild pigs entering Denmark.
The funny thing is, for every xxx meter there's xx meter gap so other not so harmless animal can pass.

I like the animals, I have several bird feeders, hummingbird feeders, butterfly feeders, and squirrel feeders. They are welcome to feast. The birds like to bathe in the sprinklers.
https://youtu.be/LhOl5-9CKEg
Even the coons, if they want the corn I leave for the pigs, I'm ok with that. Deer too, although they are fair game in deer hunting season.
But if they get into my garden, that's a problem and I will shoot them. :shucks: I have a fence to keep them out as well as the surprise sprinkler and electric fence. I want those vegetables, those belong to me.
Now, feral hogs, no. They are the enemy. And I will kill them when they come around.

A bit OT, we also have animals visiting our so-called-but-not-yet-ready-if ever "garden", birds and sometimes cats and roe deer with kids/fawn(?) at day, and hedgehogs and such at night.
Our cat made a friend a few nights ago, a .. fox. Have you ever seen a cat and a fox playing?
I had heard strange noises at 3 am and went down to look, and a very young small fox was sitting directly before the glass door to the garden, beside our cat 'Max'. We do not have chicken so i have no problem with foxes, but thought it was threatening our cat, also of diseases foxes may have, so i opened the door but they both just sat there looking at me.
I tried to scare the fox away, but it just ran a circle and sat down at the same place again. Then they both raced off on the lawn and scuffled (no biting or such), then again sitting side by side on the lawn and looking at the forest. I take it it is a very young fox without bad experience with humans etc. but still.. never saw or head of such behaviour before.

But it seems your feral pig hunting is similar as well. Your service to humanity does not go unnoticed!:Kaleun_Salute: https://gizmodo.com/feral-hogs-pollute-the-climate-as-much-as-1-million-car-1847319891
Nearly two years ago, we all had a hearty laugh about 30 to 50 feral hogs. Turns out that all those pigs aren’t just a horribly invasive species, but they could be wreaking real havoc when it comes to climate change. According to a new study published Monday in Global Change Biology, wild pigs around the world are releasing the equivalent of 1.1 million cars’ worth of carbon dioxide each year—just from digging around in the dirt.
“Given that wild pigs are known to damage soil, we realized that no other study had looked at the total area at risk at a global scale,” Christopher O’Bryan, the study’s lead author and a research fellow at the University of Queensland, said over email. “Knowing how important soil is at storing carbon, we wanted to assess the risk of wild pig soil damage on carbon emissions.”
Piggies can be really cute, sure, but they’re pretty bad news. Feral hogs put endangered native species at risk of extinction. They also tear up crops, causing between $1.5 and $2.5 billion worth of damage in the U.S. (A group of feral hogs even killed a woman in Texas in 2019.)
“Wild pigs are essentially farm animals gone rogue,” O’Bryan said. All that crop destruction isn’t just bad for business—it’s bad for the planet. Soil is packed with carbon dioxide, and it’s been well documented that human agricultural activity that disturbs the soil—like the very common practice of tilling—brings up carbon stored underground and encourages its release into the air. But there’s been surprisingly little research on how invasive species can also stir stuff up when they disturb the soil. It would stand to reason that hogs, which are basically little tractors, would have a similar effect: Their whole deal is rummaging around in the dirt for food, meaning that they can really root up a bunch of dirt. O’Bryan said that while other research has looked at the carbon dioxide footprint of hogs locally in Switzerland, China, and the Americas, this is the first study to “connect the dots at a global scale.” In order to fully calculate the impact of wild hogs all over the world, O’Bryan and his team created three models: one that predicts wild pig densities, one that converts pig density into soil area disturbed, and one that estimates carbon emissions. They then ran 10,000 simulations to account for the potential uncertainties in each model.
According to the models O’Bryan and his colleagues developed, wild pigs are uprooting anywhere between almost 14,000 square miles (36,214 square kilometers) to 47,690 square miles (123,517 square kilometers) in their non-native habitats. And all this digging has serious consequences for the carbon dioxide stored in soil. Around 5.37 million tons of carbon dioxide each year are released due to wild pig activities. Even though we may all enjoy a hog joke every once in a while, this research shows that the problems wild pigs pose are becoming more urgent to address. Scientists have called wild pigs, or Sus scrofa, “one of the most prolific invasive mammals on Earth.” In the U.S. alone, hog populations have gone from being present in 27 states in 2000 to now being found in 48 states; their population ranges between 6 to 7 million in the U.S., and experts say managing this big group of pigs might mean a mass killing of between 60% to 80% of them. (Ironically, part of the reason they’re spreading in the U.S. so fast, experts think, is that people love to hunt them—Succession, anyone?—so some are driving hogs to new areas and then allowing the population to expand.) The new findings show their impact on the climate is one more reason to end feral hogs’ reign of terror.
“Invasive species are a human-caused problem, so we need to acknowledge and take responsibility for their environmental and ecological implications,” Nicholas Patton, a University of Canterbury PhD candidate and coauthor of the study, said in a release. “If invasive pigs are allowed to expand into areas with abundant soil carbon, there may be an even greater risk of greenhouse gas emissions in the future. ... Wild pig control will definitely require cooperation and collaboration across multiple jurisdictions, and our work is but one piece of the puzzle, helping managers better understand their impacts.” BOTTOM LINE: Keep killin' them wild hogs BBY; but really, get a PigBrig and do it on an extermination scale...taking an occasional backstrap for the BBQ of course; but have an exterminator handy for carcass removal!:arrgh!: EGAD!: Even My daughter reported a dead hog in the middle of the road to Santa Rosa on her commute home last week! Need to clarify what I meant by treating animal decently.
I know that there are times when a person has to kill an animal for some reason(as long it isn't for fun)But the killing shall be quick, the animal shall not know what hit it. Whatever the animal has done or is doing it does not have to suffer minutes or hours before it dies.

Either term is fine with me. I generally don't remove the guts on a wild hog, the ribs and belly don't have enough fat to make it worth the trouble. On deer, yeah, I dress them out completely.
One term I don't care for is "harvest" and is, "I am harvesting wild game." Harvesting is something you do with grains and vegetables, animals are shot and slaughtered, or processed. I don't know who started "harvesting" or why, but I suspect it was to tone down the bloodiness for the newer generations...?

Yeah, it have a slightly different flavor but I used the same spices when cooking so you can't really taste a lot of difference. I guess it's like venison. Most of the time I make a pot roast with game I've killed. So it tastes about the same.
It is somewhat true about old boars, they do retain a strong odor and it really puts me off slaughtering it. I don't know why. I've been told you can get the odor out by marinating for a long time in ice water or vinegar water, but I don't need it that bad,. So as I said, I usually only slaughter your pigs and sows.

One looks like a young 6 point buck... hope he keeps coming by.
A note of caution however, no one has mentioned swine brucellosis or trichinosis, I assume precautions are being taken.
Everything except the gloves, which I should start using and get used to.

When you eat it, you turn into a vegetarian. Like with some fishes, who have poison in their meat, predators eat it, and die. Its some kind of Asian self-defence, get eaten while not getting eaten, something along that kind of thinking, you know.

Some reports indicate there are 6 million or more Feral hogs in the U.S up to 4 million of them are in Texas. Interesting ideas how they all got here too.

4 million feral hogs can't be wrong
Texas is a great place to live in.

Well, the hogs have stayed away since the Vanquishing. But these dummies are routinely emptying my bird feeder and smashed my hummingbird feeder. Going to have a trick for them tonight.

Wonder if strategically applied 2.2 million Scoville Heat Unit oils or sauce made from Carolina Reapers might dissuade them vandals.
