Watch as a Royal Navy warship gets hit by a massive wave to the bow. You can see the damage to the railing after it recedes. As far as I know, they weren't badly damaged but it just shows what can happen out there.

Brings back a vivid memory from way back in the late seventies when I was aboard a 20,000 ton merchantman in the middle of a heavy storm (Indian Ocean) I decided to leave the engine room and have a cigarette with a fellow officer on the bridge (Deck Officer)
We were watching the waves occasionally breaking over the forecastle, upon which were a car and cabin cruiser heavily lashed down. These were owned by one of the shipping lines directors and had been allowed to hitch a ride back to our intended destination in Europe (Antwerp if I remember correctly).
So here we were up on the bridge enjoying a smoke whilst watching the storm when my colleague said something along the lines of "Look at this massive wave approaching". I watched as it completely engulfed the forecastle for what appeared like an age and as the ship brought her nose back to the surface the car and cabin cruise were nowhere to be seen.
The Captain told us a few days later that the losses weren't covered by the cargo indemnity insurance because strictly speaking they shouldn't have been there in the first place.

That was bad, but just for arm chair sailors. :yep:
I've been in and seen worse especially around Cape Hatteras where me and the trash can became real good friends :o

I seem to recall some monster wave hit a cruise ship.
I remember they showed a clip from the ship in the news.
windows were smashed and other things

Sad thing is, I've been made sick by two foot swells when I went out in a small boat.... Nearly spewed all over one of my classmates. I am a lightweight. :har:
On a more serious note, this reminds me of quite a few tragedies that took place near the places I've lived... in 1983 the "Marine Electric" went down in huge waves not far from my parents' house -31 dead and just three survivors. And where I live now, a fishing boat broke up in a storm recently with all three men lost....captain was a meth addict, and took her out in bad weather against advice. It can be awful out there, and combine the weather with bad maintenance or substance abuse? Often deadly.

I read a report recently, showing that 30m freak/rogue waves are incredibly common, and where 1 might be survivable, they can come in 2s or 3s, which will pretty much destroy whatever tries to pass over/through.
Not only waves, but also random 30m deep holes/troughs too.

Yes; that is exactly what happened in a book I read this week called "Dark Noon":

I'd never heard of this disaster before but it was much deadlier than other, more famous shipwrecks - almost 50 people died when the fishing boat "Pelican" got hit by two rogue waves in 1951. The "Pelican" was overcrowded & many of the people on board were kids or elderly.... When they went in the water they had no chance. Not to diminish anyone's tragedy, but it's strange how other less deadly wrecks like the "Andrea Gail" or "Edmund Fitzgerald" are well-known, but this sinking with about 50 deaths has been completely forgotten.
Great read, by the way - the rescue operation was incredible; they actually had to STAB the survivors with gaff hooks to rescue them, the way you would pull aboard a big Marlin or shark. :o And one woman who was like 5'1 and 100 lbs became a heroine by pulling two men out of the Atlantic with her bare hands - even though they were twice her size.

Sorry to be pedantic but thats not a Royal Navy warship
The RN only has the MK8 DP 4.5inch forward gun, the gun in the video is a Rafael Typhoon 25mm gun on the Protector class patrol ship HMNZS Otago (New Zealand navy)
