View Full Version : Bike Week 2021
I have decided ,Shot or no Shot I'm going to Bike Week at Daytona I will not be riding into Downtown. I'm going to a place called The Cabbage Patch " Sopotnick's" for you tourist. if you punch it in Google maps you can get a satellite view of the place. Its the 80th anniversary and the last time i was there 2015. So i have spent 2 days getting my 2002 FXDWG 88 ci ready to hit the road. I'm not the guy that wants to ever be in a picture but here's a pic of my bike some years ago. and me before i hit the road . I don't know what years these pics were taken in . But i'm going
Shot or no Shot... Around here that's called Budweiser Bravery lol
For some reason, Ah can't get a pic to upload i get a little window on the left. i pick the picture and nothing happens. Any i duck pics like a Vampire caught in the daylight. What the hell was i thinkin any way. Goodnight

I always liked the Dyna's like yours. I went to Daytona on spring break one time when I was in college which is right after bike week. That was enough for me and I never went back. When we got there, there were a number of bikers still there. A number of the Bikes I saw were art and museum pieces. They were very expensive motorcycles and the owners lovingly built them into show pieces.
I had a few friends do the Daytona ride and also went to Sturgis in South Dakota. I was invited to take my bike and go with them but never really had the desire to go. I'm not into the alcohol fueled excesses and the really expansive tattoo's and that's just the women.
The Pastor from a church I attend has an Electra Glide and also a Low Rider. We in the congregation who ride motorcycles get together and do a few relatively shorts runs of a few hundred miles every year. We only did one last year because of Covid concerns
I hope you have a great time and enjoy yourself. I hope you and everyone who rides with you stay's safe.
I included a picture of a Dyna Wide Glide since your picture didn't load.

Started my trip at 12:00pm today. Stopped at gas station off I-4 just west of Deltona to top off my fuel tank and before hitting the road again i checked my phone and found a Urgent message from my wife.A quick call home and my day at bike week was over, she was able to get me an appointment for my first Covid shot on 2-18-21 at 9:00am. It was a no brainer i was back home in an hour. Sorry for the build up but common sense must prevail in this matter.

^ I think you mean 3/18 ?
Yes you are correct 3-18-21 That happens a lot when i use the laptop to do messaging as i have large hands. I have the extra large keyboard on my desktop and it works better. Thanks for uploading the picture of the Dyna that is just what my bike looks like but mine has the pearl black paint on the tank and fenders i bought it in October of 2002. It's 19 yrs old this year with 41,000 miles on it and has only a few aftermarket parts. I've had no mechanical problems with this bike as long as i have owned it.
I have to say that HD's customer service has dropped to the bottom of the barrel in the last 5yrs if you own one of these older bikes.Last month i bought a new front and rear tire for my bike from Dennis Kirk, i get a lot more choice of brands and prices this time i purchased Dunlop American Elite tires. Made an appointment with the bike shop i bought the bike from to have them installed and a general tune up and oil change done i mean what the hell the bike is there right.I arrived on the morning of the appointment checked in and after a half hour wait i was informed by the service manager they no longer install any parts or tires that aren't purchased thru Harley Davidson they would do the tune up.
I found a local shop that does mostly custom work to install the tires at a Total cost of $243.00 dollars i did the rest of the work myself.I still get compliments on how good the bike looks for its age. I bought it just to cruise around Florida on and it's been great for that and now i think it may be time for something newer at the end of the year. And it damn sure won't be another Harley Davidson. Wow i got side tracked into a rant

Hi CW, Thanks sharing and what brand and type bike do you ride? These days i don't ride far from home 20 or so miles out and back and when i do its by myself. Maybe later this summer when it gets safer to go on trips again the wife and i will ride up to St. Augustine Fl. We used to ride the bike up there and spend the weekend every couple months when i first bought it and always had a great time. Enjoy life when you can ya never know when something like Covid will come along and change it forever.

Hey Jeff the SpeedMaster 1200cc is a beautiful bike and a real piece of engineering i liked what i saw. But when i laid eyes on the Scrambler 1200 XC and the 900cc Street Scrambler my excitement level went up a notch. I'll take some time and see what's on the market and think about what type of bike would be a better fit for me going into the future. Thanks for the heads up on the Triumph's

Hey there Gorpet. You are more than welcome regarding the Dyna picture. I wanted people to see what a beautiful motorcycle the Dyna's are. A good friend of mine has one. He became sick with appendicitis on a ride and asked me to retrieve his Dyna some 70 miles away. The flat beds were being used and he instead asked me to ride it back. Some 20 miles into the ride, I decided he wasn't getting his bike back.:D I asked him to sell it to me but he won't part with it. I got him another tank and fenders. We didn't want to repaint his and ruin it's value. I painted the tank and fenders with an antique white / teal color in a crinkle finish and it's stunning.
In my humble opinion, The Dyna, with the Sportster front end, may well be the best motorcycle that Harley ever made. It's light, nimble and with a powerful engine and 66 inch wheel base, is a comfortable cruiser for an all day ride. If the Dyna's are properly re-jetted and with a screaming eagle setup and free flowing exhaust, The Dyna's are easily pushing 75hp and about 84-ft-lbs of torque. That qualifies the Dyna as a legitimate power cruiser. I never see Dyna's for sale unless they are thrashed out in need of a total rebuild. People who ride Dyna's know what a great bike they have.
Jeff had mentioned His Triumph SpeedMaster and how great it is / was. That's hardly a surprise as Triumph always made great bikes, just ask Keanu Reeves. I almost purchased a Triumph Rocket that had been wrecked. It's a 3 cylinder with the cylinders located down the long axis of the bike. It made for a very powerful and balanced cruiser.
As for me, I have been buying and selling bikes after restoration and I'm down to 3. One is an 86 Honda Shadow 700 with 11,000 miles on the clock. It had 8300 miles on the clock when I bought it a few years ago on the cheap and it needed nothing except a good cleaning. It had lived a comfortable life tucked away in a heated garage. The Shadow, at highway speeds, gets 61MPGg and pumps out 62-66 horsepower and easily keeps up or outruns motorcycles in the 1500 cc class. Sadly the extreme angle of the seat and short 60 inch wheel base ruins what is an otherwise superior motorcycle. For whatever reason, Japan started to make motorcycles with a single crank pin to make them sound like Harley's. I don't understand the correlation but it lowered similar displacement bikes and engines from 62hp to 45 hp with a corresponding drop in the torque ratings as well.
I also purchased a 2004 Kawasaki Vulcan 750. It came with Vance and Hines pipes, Corbin premium seat with backrest and high end highway pegs. While it looks like new cosmetically, it's in serious need of mechanical work. It also has what I call " short leg syndrome. " At 65 mph / 104 Kph, it's at 4500 RPM !! By contrast, the Shadow is at 3150 RPM at the same speed. The Vulcan's also had chronic Stator issues necessitating complete removal of the engine from the chassis for replacement
I had planned on stripping the bike down including removal of the engine and doing a mock up and welding new motor mounts including rubber isolators with to install a Shadow 750 engine. I may also put a sportser 1200 engine in. I haven't decided. I also have a 5 gallon Harley Ultra Classic tank left over from a project I did. I planned on using it as well if it looks okay which would give the new bike and configuration a 300 mile/ 482 Kilometer range. It would be something of an oddball bike and not something I could easily resell unless someone understood the value of the re-engineering. Still, after all that work, I wouldn't sell it anyhow. With a 63 inch wheelbase and floorboards, It should be a comfy ride and look a lot like your Dyna although it will never be one.
My apologies for the long narrative. I'm just anxious to get back out and ride.
Stay safe my friend on your rides. I'm glad you are in line for the Covid inoculation. Hopefully, we can all get out and enjoy the spring and summer this year and renew old acquaintances. Next year, you can visit Daytona, secure in the knowledge that you and your lady are fully protected from Covid.

My biggest question is, why didn't you ride this beautiful bike more ? I'm hoping it was just that you didn't have time as opposed to health related reasons. The Speedmaster really was a beautiful motorcycle and had a Unique profile.

I took a job that requires a LOT of time away from home and a LOT of travel.
As the years went by on the road?
I watched as cell phones were causing more accidents/near accidents.
I decided after MANY years of riding? I didn't want to be one of those statistics.
So I gave it up. SpeedMaster sat for 10 years. Always inside!
I do take a spin now and then on Nancy Lady's 2004 America.

I completely understand that. I have had a few close calls with people not paying attention or on their cell phone / texting. In fact, I don't know anyone who rides who hasn't had close calls. I stopped riding for a while but got back into it when I was refurbishing them. I did that on the side as a hobby but wanted to ride more. I would have liked to have seen you your speedmaster as I probably would have bought it.
My lady would have loved that as it would have given her yet another reason to be mad at me. :03:I'm one step away from being banished to the garage on a permanent basis now. :03:

It sat 10 years and in 2 days? He was riding it!
New plugs, new battery, and he rebuilt the carbs.

Jeff , I know how you feel about letting your bike set . My job took me out of town and away. I paid my son to start it and polish it twice a month. While i was away truck driving. He never had a interest in driving that heavy chunk of American Steel.Anyway that's a damn good lookin bike in its present shape, 0000 steel wool, polish and some sweat she would look as good as the day you brought her home. And i don't think it will be your last Bike.
I think sometime in the future , We may be talking about those Triumph Scramblers ! Traffic is bad here too, something like that 900 with a silent exhaust and the nimble way it could be handled by those who know. Well lets see what the future brings to us. Live long and Live my friend.:D

Thanks so much. I took the Shadow to the parts store yesterday along with a friend who had his Harley out. It was a bit chilly but still nice to be out. I'm in the upper mid west. My parents had a place not far from you in the Zephyr / Spring Hill area of Florida. I remember it being very hot in July there !!!!. A good friend I played football with in HS moved and started a business in Orlando.
You and your wife most certainly would be welcome to ride with us. They ride a wide assortment of machines too, including Harley and Gold wing trikes, Can am 3 wheel Spyders and the odd assortment of Harley and Japanese cruisers. We always pick a point of interest and ride out, sometimes to other states. We have one guy and his wife who rides a Harley trike and he is 80 years old. They are both great people. Then again, the vast majority of people on bikes that I have had the pleasure and privilege of meeting have all been great people.
A good friend of mine invited me to join him on a ride to Carlisle Pa. for military day but he informed me they have cancelled it due to Covid Concerns. It would have been a long run. A lot of the people we ride with are ex military / ex police. It wasn't planned that way, just the way it worked out but we have just as many who are not either of them.
My friend yesterday with the Harley commented on how great his Dyna, like yours, was and how sorry he is to have let it go. Btw, your Dyna looks awesome. Absolutely first rate. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:
Keep up the great work on keeping it so clean and DON'T ever get rid of it. You will be sorry if you do. We can always chat and feel free to leave a private message should you want, as well.

I had it stored in my Cousin's Garage for the last 5 years as he was going to buy it. Before that it was in my back room.
The pipes are Stainless Steel and all your seeing is the dust!
My Cousin was diagnosed with terminal cancer and expected to pass in 2 months or so.
I have no room to store it so it had to go.
I actually sold it on payments several times but everyone that entered into the contracts couldn't meet the payments!
So I probably made $3000 easy.
