Newbie here, although I have played the old Silent Service and SH 4 for years. I have just downloaded SH 4 ver. 1.4, but when I try to execute it, it tells me
"This app has been blocked for your protection"
Seems I need administrator approval... I have no anti-virus programs other than the native Win 10 stuff. Any ideas?:arrgh!:

Oh the joy of Windows 10 (i suspect?).

Do NOT install it in the usual .. programs folder, create a folder "Games" and install it below this one. Any older programs run into problems with the "user protection" in the ..programs folders, be it the 'normal' or the x86 one.
I think Win 10 has become a botnet.

And welcome to Subsim :)

Thanks! Here's the thing, though...I did not install in a program files directory. It is through Steam, I installed directly to a separate Steam folder I have....

It was a Win 10 thing. I went on to youtube and found an easy fix!

My guess is he installed the patch under the administrator privileges'.

While i tried this i was able to install the sim and run it once with or without mods, then it would not start again, simply freeze or tell something like "file access denied", depending on the Windows internal build and Windows patches applied. Not only SH4, also Rome - Total War and others.
Also true for business programs like InDesign, Solidworks and others.
If i had bought something like Solidworks for say 20 employees and would then be confronted with the MS bull after the next forced update, i would either sue them to hell and back, or shoot someone. They are all criminals :arrgh!:

This is pretty sound advice. To that I would add the following. Check to see if there are DRM's prohibiting the game play. I don't know if there is Starforce protection but I would run the removal tool to rule out interference there.

On the other hand, I have had a few conversations with Blackswan40 and he is a guru with regards to installation issues and problems. Blackswan had suggested long ago to install the game in the C:// drive itself and not in any pre made folder because as Catfish alluded to, any files installed, fall under the Microsoft umbrella unless simply installed in the C drive. Your game will make it's own folder within the C drive so, not to worry.

Good luck with everything and welcome aboard. :)
