Ship acceleration

Hello, I just got wolves of steel running but am having a problem with ships dodging my torpedoes with insane acceleration both forward and reverse.
Is there any way to stop this? I just find it hard to believe a heavy frieghter can peform like a sports car compared to my boat lol.
