Vulcan, West Virginia, lacked a road connection to the rest of West Virginia and relied on a swinging bridge across the Tug Fork to Kentucky Route 194. The bridge was too narrow for vehicular traffic and had deteriorated by the early 1970s with missing boards.

In 1974–75, the bridge had completely collapsed due to wood rot, and the mayor of Vulcan had unsuccessfully lobbied both the state and federal government to replace it. Because of a lack of action, in 1977, the self-appointed mayor of Vulcan, John Robinette, requested foreign aid from the Soviet Union and East Germany to replace the town's bridge. Soviet journalist Iona Andronov visited Vulcan on December 17, 1977, to meet with Robinette and survey the problem. Within an hour of his visit, reporters were told that the state would replace the bridge. The West Virginia Legislature provided $1.3 million in funding to replace the bridge which opened in 1980.

The Soviet Union had released a statement that they would pay for a new bridge.

The German language allows to chain nouns together to form new nouns, and in theory there's no limit, so basically you can chain as many nouns together as you want.

Officially, the longest German word is Grundstücksverkehrsgenehmigungszuständigkeitsübert ragungsverordnung with 67 letters, a legal term not commonly used in everyday- language. It contains the nouns

Grundstück (a plot of land)
Verkehr (traffic)
Genehmigung (approval/permission)
Zuständigkeit (responsibility/competency)
Übertragung (transfer)
Verordnung (legal decree).

For the first five an "s" is added to show the genitive case.

The word roughly translates as "decree which regulates the transfer of responsibilty for permitting traffic on a plot of land".

Edit: for some reason the forum added an empty space in the word after the 50th letter - don't ask me why.

Since Chinese ideographs consist of patterns of standard markings, he started programming a computer, ultimately called SINOTYPE.

What he found out what that he did not have to enter all of the individual markings before the computer could "predict" the final set.

In working with Chinese linguists, his team discovered that he only needed to program 22 markings in order for his computer to accurately auto complete in the correct ideograph.

:nope:

The pulse of your thumb is the same rate as your pulse at other locations.

The rule is that you should not use your own thumb to take the pulse of someone else as the stronger pulse in your own thumb can make it more difficult to count and evaluate the other person's pulse.
