I came across this youtube video and thought it might be of interest. American and Russian soldiers were being held prisoner in Stalag VII.

The Russian soldiers were not given much in the form of food rations and the American contingent / prisoners divided out their rations smuggling them to the Russian prisoners of war.

Dr. Nikita Zakravovich Asayas ( please forgive what I'm sure is an incorrect spelling ) was one of those Russian and insisted on speaking with an American reporter who was there to cover a Mikhail Gorbachev / Ronald Regan Summit. He wanted to relay his story, in this case, to Charles Kuralt on his experiences in Stalag VII

Dr. Asayas wanted to convey his appreciation and thanks to the Americans who cared enough to risk their lives to save the Russian contingent. There is a picture where a Russian prisoner of war was shot after an American prisoner gave him a cigarette.

Sometimes the worst of times and situations can bring out the best in people. I thought this was a great story and various governments could learn a lot from these good, basic, everyday men of uncommon integrity and honor. This really is a universal story of what can be when people well and truly care about their fellow human beings.
