If you guys want to have some fun racking up tonnage and you're playing the U-boat portion of the game..
I got orders to proceed to west of Australia & sink 5K tons. Did so & hung around because I noticed a fair amount of enemy sightings show up on the map (KW5 & KW8 general area). The merchant traffic invariably turned out to be 4 to 5 merchants per convoy and non of them had escorts. The date was around Sept.-Oct. '43.
I'd pick out the merchants that probably had defensive fire (Liberty ships, etc.) & sink with torps, then surface & finish off the rest with the deck gun.
There'd invariably be one or two that surprised me with return fire I didn't expect but their aim was so bad it wasn't a real problem.
I wound up sinking 28 merchant ships for 104,119 tons, expending all torps. Gotta be up front though; I had the Extra Ammo mod. Without that, I doubt I would've had enough deck gun ammo to pull off that much tonnage.
As the Klingons would say though; It was glorious... :)
