A Jewish witness to the violent attacks carried out during Kristallnacht is sharing his experiences to help educate future generations.

On 9 November 1938 more than 1,000 synagogues were attacked in Germany and Austria. It was the outbreak of mass violence against Jews which was to end in their mass murder. It became known as Kristallnacht - 'The night of broken glass’.

To mark its anniversary, 96-year-old Jakob Sanger is working with Jroots, a charity that specialises in Holocaust education using accounts of survivors.

I think the German people have suffered enough, dragging this stuff back to the surface can bring back some nasty memories/feelings, IMO.:hmmm:

I have a different opinion about it. It is just as important to pay attention to events like this, in the same way that we honor what is happening today in the future. positive as well as negative! People cannot walk around and close their eyes to what has happened and is happening, there are, as you know, enormous events that have directly or indirectly affected us. Do not forget it!

I would personally rather forget the evils that have happened in the past, there is enough today to think about! :yep:

Instead of once again wallowing in self chastening, the Germans should better stand up and reject the marauding Islamic and Nazi Antisemitism that exists in the present today. And the bigger part fo that is done not by Nazis, but Muslims. Since 2005 the statistics show a constant decline of the Jewish population and community in Germany. The acts of aggression against them is steeplky climbing. Since years. What did the gemrans do about that?

Talking, and insisting on that Islam has nothing to do with it.

Jews in Germany are officially recommend to hide their identity in public. I think it would be better that we mark them so that we all can better actively protect them. :smug:

So to be seen in Germany, the land of the endlessly patient, endlessly pedagogically understanding judges. Sometimes I feel like wanting to vote for Trump myself.

Perfectly right Reece. Germans have forgotten lessons that we thought had been learned. Racist and antisemitic attitudes are becoming more and more common in my home country, just take a look at the anti-muslim gibberish posted by a certain member here on subsim. The idea that Germans can decide what is right, what is wrong, because of their cultural and (would you believe it) genetic superiority is still around. It has been discovered recently that Nazi ideology has become more and more popular in German police, army and special forces. So anything that can help us understand that this monster is raising its ugly head again is much appreciated.

To give expression to this is a person 96-year-old Jakob Sange he wants to give his view on what happened and all credit to him who has the courage to line up in a video recording to tell his version. Definitely a difficult situation, but he chooses to do it with his motives. Despite his advanced age (according to the article), he works with Jroots, a charity that specializes in Holocaust education using accounts of survivors.

There were several "demonstrations" or rather memorial walks in groups at the date of the Kristallnacht planned in several german cities yesterday, due to the Corona lockdown the number was limited.
This is an annual date to remember for sure, usually the walks pass points in the cities were certain things happened at that date, like where synagogues were burnt down or also where non-jewish germans protested against the SA (if seldom).

The first time we joined this walk two years ago they had even mustered police protection for us, against alleged right-wing aggression.
Lots of right wingers here try to spread lies and say it did not happen. It did. This date and those walks are there to remember that.

What is completely idiotic and disgusting is that while the nazi right-wing say "it" did not happen and they have nothing against "jews" (enter any hated minority here) they make perfectly clear that they really hate them  No one should deny it out of fear of this right wing scum.

So I am clearly on Gerald's side here. And while i do not feel personnally responsible for what happened we sure have to watch out it does not happen again.

This thread and it's contents made me remember that I was thinking about starting a new thread.

This thread was based on all these hours of documentary about Hitler, Society in Germany under Hitler , Nazisme WWII and so on

AND
by studying the behaviour of my friends on the web-Here I'm talking about those who worship Trump and other national politicians.

Someone(can't remember who) said once "Never again" which was said after WWII I think it was.

Based on all this I claim

90-95 % of us will NOT be able to see if an upcoming politician/other public person is the antichrist(to use a biblical word).

These 90-95 % will be blinded by their worshipping of this person.

I'm sorry...History will repeat itself maybe not with holocaust or genocide.

History is important so we don't make the same mistake. This sentence is wrong. History is very important yes indeed it is.
But due to our behavior when it comes to politicians, a huge majority will not be able to see if an upcoming politician/other public person is very evil

(this is my standpoint)

In a 1948 speech to the House of Commons, Churchill paraphrased Santayana when he said 'Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it. '

The problem is we don't, due to our nature/behavior we will repeat it.

Amusingly relevant. Seems some Germans have not learned their lessons.
