Hi,

Getting back into SH3, still love this game... playing 1943, my first time trying later war. And having a ton of trouble trying to get in front of a convoy. I had one or two good approaches and sank a few but the convoy seems to be zigzagging every 25-50 nm or maybe every 2 hours. I swear they seem to turn when I'm in front of them setting up for a shot (almost starting to think the game cheats and knows you are there)

Im pretty sure they aren't detecting me as I'm playing with the green yellow red sub indicator on and it's always green.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get in front of them and get a shot? Cant stay surfaced due to their radar. Submerge travel too slow. At first when i found the convoy, they were not turning that frequently.

Any help greatly appreciated. I get they are supposed to zig zag as that was a tactic, but not sure if turning every hour or 2 is realistic? And if it is, how you get a shot?

Only other thing i can think of is to sail ahead 200 nm and hopefully they go back to a normal zig zag patter like when i first encountered them.

GWX 3 convoys do have waypoints that make them zigzag in a random sequence. So, it doesn't necessarily mean you have been detected. They just do.

I can't say that I have a solution to this. I never really did experience the radar-age in the game. But to make best use of your speed underwater while already in front, is to put the target on your 270/90 bearing and use whatever speed you can muster. But yeah, it will drain the battery.

Can you maintain visual contact from a far distance, despite radar? If so, look at the AOB, and just keep shifting sideways until it looks 0. Then mark a line from your position to them. And reposition further along it's extension to lie in wait for the attack. I guess as soon as possible so they don't zigzag again.

Thx for the reply! Yea i try the 90/270 but they just outlast you in battery/speed.

From ALOT of trial and error, it does seem like when you detect radar signals, they do seem to turn to avoid the position you were in (even tho the sub indicator stays green). Likewise, if you stay submerged they and stay at 90/270, they will stay on their same course for a fairly long time. As if they know where you are.

This is my first late years with radar and if they do detect you right away, they adjust which is cool.

However, if i couldve done an interactive map history, it seemed like they knew where I was at all times. if i was submerged at90/270, they kept course. If i was anywhere near in front of them, they would turn. Maybe just luck but tracking a convoy from Africa to the channel, at least 20+ instances, would've thought law of averages would've took place. If they really didn't know where i was that is. Ah well. Thanks for the response. Be nice to see a tutuorial somewhere but i couldn't find one.

You have to differentiate between the Game and the Convoy.
The game always knows where you are. If this would not be the case, the game could not make any collision with your boat, on Land, on Ground or with another Ship, even with Shells from enemy ships...
The Game does not cheat. But you can. By modifying the game.

Im pretty sure they aren't detecting me as I'm playing with the green yellow red sub indicator on and it's always green. Then you are not detected. Fine.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get in front of them and get a shot? Cant stay surfaced due to their radar. Submerge travel too slow. At first when i found the convoy, they were not turning that frequently. You have to promote your expirience. Fasten your steps to get infront of the convoy. Faster engines, better batteries. And an immense amount of Luck. If this where so easy, the germans have won the "Atlantic battle".

Any help greatly appreciated. I get they are supposed to zig zag as that was a tactic, but not sure if turning every hour or 2 is realistic? And if it is, how you get a shot?See above. Nobody will give you a guidance for luck, i think.
You really have to look into the Campaign-files with the Sh3MissionEditor. This is the only way to see and learn what the game is doing with the convoys. Realistic or not.

I find this way to much. You may circle the convoy short in Sensor-range. 25-30km. Use hydrophone periodicaly and the Nav-map-Tools.
