'Nobel Prize for Medicine goes to Hepatitis C discovery'

Three scientists who discovered the virus Hepatitis C have won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology.

The winners are British scientist Michael Houghton and US researchers Harvey Alter and Charles Rice.

The Nobel Prize committee said their discoveries ultimately "saved millions of lives".

The virus is a common cause of liver cancer and a major reason why people need a liver transplant.

In the 1960s, there was huge concern that people receiving donated blood were getting chronic hepatitis (liver inflammation) from an unknown, mysterious disease.

The Nobel Prize committee said a blood transfusion at the time was like "Russian roulette".

Scientists win historic Nobel chemistry prize for 'genetic scissors'

Two scientists have been awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing the tools to edit DNA.

Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna are the first two women to share the prize, awarded for their work on the technology of genome editing.

Their discovery, known as Crispr-Cas9 genetic scissors, is a way of making specific and precise changes to the DNA contained in living cells.

They will share the prize money of 10 million krona (£861,200; $1,110,400).

The technology has been transformative for basic science research and it could also potentially be used to treat, or even cure, inherited illnesses.

The Swedish Academy has chosen the American poet Louise Glück, citing her ‘unmistakable poetic voice’

The poet Louise Glück has become the first American writer to win the Nobel prize for literature in 27 years.

Glick, cited for “her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.”, is the 16th woman to win the Nobel, and the first American since Toni Morrison took the prize in 1993.

The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for its efforts to combat hunger.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said the WFP had acted "as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict".

The prize is worth 10m Swedish krona ($1.1m; £872,600).

The WFP, the 101st winner of the prize, said it was "deeply humbled".

'Twixt our Ghez and our Glück we're holdin'our own in Stoclholm! :Kaleun_Applaud :Kaleun_Salute: The considerable prize used to be tax free IRS-wise until 1986, (a $eriou$ "black hole":O:)but I fear that's no longer the case.:shucks: President Obama, regarded by Trump as a "black hole", avoided the whole issue by regifting his prize to avoid the 'hole issue'! I doubt his Covidship, morally and financily bankrupt, and a three-time nominee in his own right(for love letters to N. Korea's 'fat boy'-yet another black hole) would "regift" anyone but but his apparently $70,000 tax deductible hair stylist, according to his heretofore hidden tax records. This has been a political black hole rant; and I approved this message! :arrgh!:

Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson have won the 2020 Nobel Economics Prize for their work on auction theory.

The Stanford University game theorists have helped in developing formats for the sale of aircraft landing slots, radio spectrums, and emissions trading.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said their work "benefitted sellers, buyers and taxpayers" worldwide.

Game theory uses mathematics to study decision-making, conflict, and strategy in social situations.

Trump has "regifted" every single one of his quarterly presidential paychecks to one of the following agencies; the National Park Service, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the Department of Homeland Security. Not a hairdresser among them.

On the other hand your boy Obama kept his pay. Guess he needed it for his plush post presidency gig on Marthas Vineyard right?

It's amazing what you can buy with just a couple hundred grand a year salary...

To his credit, the Donald has lived up to his campaign promise not to accept his pay...:Kaleun_Salute: now if he'll stop tweeting and let his blond hair go a little grey I'll even vote for him. I prefer a candidate on Viagra to one needing Aricept and debate teleprompters! :arrgh!:

Well we were talking about a three time Nobel prize nominee but since when has the Nobel prize not been political? You can't deny that they gave it to the last president for purely political reasons.

There is a difference between the Noble prize and the Noble Peace Prize?

You know that don't you?

I do, so? Do you realize that a sports car is different than a sedan but in the end both are just automobiles?
