Youtube has an extensive collection of videos that cover just about every aspect of commanding a sub. I'd start there.
Good luck,

As the Scottish Hammer says, YouTube is an excellent source for things such as this. But for me, the easiest thing to do is open the game folder, which if you did a "default" Ubisoft install, would be "C:\Program Files (x86) \Ubisoft \Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific". If Steam, it would be "C:\Program Files (x86) \Steam \SteamApps \common \Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific", or similar. Some installs might say "Silent Hunter 4", etc. A "Search" using the Windows search box should find these files also --->... Anyway, in that "root" game folder are a couple of jpeg files, "SH4_Q-Ref_Card_Back.jpg" and "SH4_Q-Ref_Card_Front.jpg". The "Back" file has the list of keyboard short-cuts, the "Front" file is a picture of the computer keyboard, with the "function" of the different keys labeled on the picture. Very helpful. When I first got SH4 years and years ago, they had a tri-folded, cardboard printed version of those two, and laying that between the keyboard and the monitor back then was the best thing ever to learn the keyboard. The big thing is the number keys across the top are your throttle controls, with 1-5 being the forward speeds, and 6-9 being the reverse speeds. The "Function", or "F" keys will take you to some of the stations in the boat. Go to the periscope screen in Stock by pressing the "F4" key, then the attack periscope can be raised and lowered with the Page Up and Page Down keys, look left & right with the arrow keyts. Cycle through the torpedo tubes with the "W" key, open and close the tubes with the "Q" key, and in Stock, shoot a torpedo by pressing the <Enter> key. You can do rudder hard left and right with the bracket keys "[" and "]") and center the rudder with the apostrophe key ' -however, it is easier to "steer" the boat with a click on the compass in the lower right of the screen. You can set a course in the NavMap screen (use the "F3" button to get there). The use of a mouse helps immensely in all of this. If you "Start outside the harbor" when starting a career, you don't have to worry about "steering" around so much stuff in the harbor, but of course, you do miss all of the cool stuff in the scene... :salute:
btw, "Welcome to SubSim, Ragtimer - good "handle" :subsim:
