"First in space; first in rank" imho: 1959's black & white tv show: Men into Space with Col. McCauley...:Kaleun_Salute: I even had the helmet> https://ids.si.edu/ids/deliveryService?id=https://airandspace.si.edu/sites/default/files/images/collection-objects/record-images/T20130051000cp01.JPG&max=900https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/44/William_Lundigan_Men_into_Space_1959.JPG This debate is terminated! :shucks: I gotta eat my peanut butter and jelly sandwich....https://ids.si.edu/ids/deliveryService?id=https://airandspace.si.edu/sites/default/files/images/collection-objects/record-images/A20070087000CP01.jpg&max=900https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6g869w (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6g869w)

First, neither Buck Rogers nor Flash Gordon were naval aviators. Buck Rogers was in the Army Air Service and Flash Gordon was a polo player Yale graduate.
Second, I would offer up Major Matt Mason

Third the US army has over 300 vessles and they have no problem with rank structure
Fourth, Even the Air Force has boaty things.
Fifth, since the US does not have any spacecraft assigned to Space Force, nor will there be in the foreseeable future, the question on what to call the boss is moot.

I say let the space fleet have naval ranks,
and the soldiers being sent down to planets have army ranks.
You can call the latter ultramarines and clad them in blue if you must.

What confuses me is what are they sewing? :hmmm:
Ah, what does a ham actor, scenery-chewer like Shatner knew about US space show history? He's a dang Canadian!... :D
Major Don West’s ineptness caused the space family Robinson to be “Lost in Space” on their space ship the Jupiter 2 forever.
Every Lost In Space watcher worth his salt knows it was DR. Smith's initial and continued sabotage of the Jupiter 2 that was the blame for the plight of the Robinson family and crew; a bit of jealousy and a smear of a higher ranking officer, maybe...?...
There’s Major Anthony Nelson — who piloted a spacecraft that came crashing down next to a deserted island where he found an ancient bottle that contained a woman named Jeannie and brought the attention of Colonel Alfred Bellows to him for his crazy antics at NASA.
What 'piloted'? Nelson was at the mercy of the winds at the end of his chutes; he had no control at all over his craft; he did, however, otherwise successfully complete his mission and wound up with Barbara Eden as a bonus; maybe jealous Nelson got the gorgeous babe and not Kirk...?...
We cannot forget USAF Colonel Steve Austin, an astronaut who crashed his ship and severely injured himself that cost taxpayers $6 million to put him back together, who was portrayed by my dear friend, Lee Majors.
Austin also didn't crash because of his mishandling of his craft; the experimental craft fell apart around him and crashed; again, a bit of rank envy and the fact his series lasted two more seasons than Shatners's...?...
...and, hey, Kirk can't hold a candle to Picard who battled far more formidable foes that Kirk, survived an assimilation by the Borg, torture by the Cardassians, and had more stones than Bill Boy...
...and let's not forget a bout Janeway, whose ship and crew were hijacked and stranded way, way out of Federation space, she not only got her ship and crew back to Earth, she also discovered new planets/species/galaxies, vanquished far better equipped forces, established communications with other worlds and civilizations, and not only fought of the Borg multiple times, she ended up defeating them, all without barely mussing hr 'do; maybe Bill's toupee is too tight and is affecting his thinking...
In the 50s, I recall the TV shows Captain Video, and Captain Midnight (also known under the title Jet Jackson); there was also a local San Francisco Bay Area afternoon kids show in the late 50s called Captain Satellite, showing cartoons and featured space age themes; I was mad about rockets and space and they had a regular daily contest where prizes were awarded for space themed drawings and artwork; I submitted several and eventually wound up winning a prize, a home milkshake maker; that show was must see TV for an awful lot of kids in SF; this is what local kids's TV shows were like back in the 50s (this show is from the final week of the show in 1969):

Space was really a very, very wondrous and magical concept back then...

Looks to be but they were called skants. They didn't last very long.
He looks like he wants to choke her for making him wear it....
Actually, if you think back to ST:TNG, there was a sort of similar garment with long sleeves that was some sort of formal officer's ceremonial dress uniform:
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/4/47/Starfleet_dress_uniform%2C_2365.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20121207033123&path-prefix=en
Its got longer sleeves, a more tailored look and a more structured collar, but its basically the same design as the Simplicity pic; maybe they were trying to emphasize the "dress" in "dress uniform"... :03:

That's what it's supposed to fit like.
Picard who survived torture by the Cardassians
I survived torture by the Kardashians. That's gotta count for something.

When you posted that picture it jogged my memory; there was a bit of backlash in the ST:TNG production world when the series first came out over the uniforms; I didn't really remember the above costume, but I'd be willing to bet some one, probably the network, got negative feedback over the 'guy in a dress' thing and told the producers to dump the idea; one thing I do know for sure is when the series started and some female characters were wearing short skirts/dresses, which were a nod back to the miniskirts/mini-dresses of the female crew on the original series (Gene Roddenberry was know as a 'leg man'); times had changed in the nearly 20 years since the end of the original series and objectifying female characters wasn't as acceptable; when the first few TNG episodes aired, there were not a few criticisms about the short skirts, particularly the uniform worn by Counselor Troi played by Marina Sirtis...

Not only did a lot of the female viewers (and some male viewers) object to the costumes, so did some of the female actors who had to wear them; Sirtis really didn't like the original Troi uniform, which she derided as something like a 'space cheerleader' getup; Sirtis also didn't like that the uniform drew attention to her being a bit overweight and the producer agreed and the 'space cheerleader' was gone and replaced with a a tailored body suit that evolved as the series progressed; myself, I actually liked the body suits better than the cheerleader outfits, particular when, in Voyager, it reached its finest refinement in the bodysuit worn by 7 of 9...

Try the new Lower Decks animated series. I'm really loving it and the way it respects Trek but punches holes in soooo many of the inbred concepts. Four episodes now "aired" on CBS All Access. I even received a PADD yesterday given to me and featured in the newest episode, built by Dietrich from Germany who is the master of PADD builds.
