Timing coincidence, I am moving into a new house and was unpacking yesterday. Came across a box of vintage jerseys, autographed pictures, a stein engraved with the names of all the 70s and 80s Raider greats, and my copy of Blanda: Alive and Kicking I had when I was 14. Got it autographed at a Houston Oilers game, Blanda, Madden, Brown, Lamonica, Biletnikoff, Stabler, Tatum, Siani, all autographed it.

Threw it all in the trash. "Screw" the NFL.

George Blanda was one of the greatest football players of all time.

He could run, pass, kick field goals and even quick kick on 3rd and long

George Blanda
George Blanda was the oldest player in the history of the NFL.
He retired at the age of 48, just short of his 49th birthday.

George Blanda played pro football for 26 seasons – longer than any other person.
However, he'll probably be remembered best for his 1970 season with the Oakland Raiders.

I know who Blanda was. He retired the year before the Raiders won their first Super Bowl, your point is?

Don't throw any memorabilia away ... it could be worth a lot of money

plus George Blanda played for the Houston Oilers too you know for one of the greatest coaches of all time Sid Gilman who was also Blanda's coach when they were in Chicago for the Bears.

Meanwhile in pleasant New England...

Word is that if you want to beat Newton to Gillette Stadium, you have to arrive well before the sun rises. Such a motivated approach, coupled with the well-advertised energy he brings to the field, have created a spark inside team headquarters and positioned him as a leader.
"He has the juice every day," Patriots' third-year cornerback J.C. Jackson (http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3121649/jc-jackson) said. "That's what we need.""Every day he comes in with a lot of juice and gets guys going," third-year tight end Ryan Izzo (https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3122920/ryan-izzo) added.
As for where Newton stands with learning the system, quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch said the "leaps he's been taking each day have been really impressive" considering the "huge foundational gap" working against Newton in a new offense.
Fisch, too, has taken note of how Newton has helped set a tone.
"Cam has a great energy about him and is one of those personalities that is infectious," Fisch said. "He's come in every day with an excitement to work."
Now is the time for Newton to make his decisive move for the starting job. One point coach Bill Belichick made is that last week was set up as a review for players, so coaches feel like everyone has been given a fair chance as they begin a string of five straight practices Sunday.
The competition now rises, and the expectation among many who have watched him closely over the last few weeks is that Newton will, too.

I see the NBA and baseball shut down playoff games because this idiot got himself shot. Gonna laugh when the nfl does something as stupid.

I would hope it's obvious my "disdain" for an organization and its players who have no respect for their customers. Their political brand is Democrat. Supporting and getting enthused in the NFL is the equivalent of cleaning Hillary Clinton's toilet.:O:

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions will play their first two home games of the season without fans inside Ford Field. But that isn’t stopping the team from finding ways to keep fans involved while helping local charities at the same time.

Fans can purchase cardboard cutouts to place in the lower bowl end zones for home games this season. Detroit offers cutouts to the general public for $150 and season-ticket holders for $125 for the entire season. Single-game cutouts are available for the “Crucial Catch” and “Salute to Service” game for $50 each.

Cam Newton Continuing To Impress Patriots’ Coaching Staff On And Off The Field

BOSTON (CBS) — The Cam Newton-New England Patriots union is three games old. Though the team’s 2-1 record reflects that not everything has gone perfectly, the words from the team’s coaching staff on Tuesday indicate that both parties remain very happy with the arrangement.

“I’ve certainly observed someone that’s truly inspired to play as well as humanly possible,” quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch told reporters via video conference. “His work ethic has been, obviously, well-documented since he’s been here. We’ve talked about it repeatedly and it’s all true. He’s here first in the morning, he’s last to leave. He’s really trying to dive deep into a playbook that has been established over a 20-year span. He’s had, I don’t know, close to maybe two months of that playbook. I guess we’re now almost [through] September. He came July 28th and it’s September 29th, so he’s done everything he can and continues to. … He’s learning, he’s doing a tremendous job at learning. I think his motivation is to be the very best he possibly can be. Each week he’s shown that he’s trying to do that.”

Cam Newton QB for the Patriots test positive for Covid-19 and one other back up QB for KC.

They were suppose to play today, but now has been postponed till Monday.

Patriots have zero positive COVID-19 tests on Sunday, Chiefs game trending towards Monday, per report

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/patriots-have-zero-positive-covid-19-tests-on-sunday-chiefs-game-trending-towards-monday-per-report/

After a Saturday that saw Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton land on the reserve/COVID list following a positive test for the coronavirus, New England appears to be operating under the best-case scenario. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, all of the tests taken on Sunday morning from Patriots players have all come back negative. This marks the second-straight day of negative tests on the roster following Newton's positive test. Meanwhile, Kansas City's latest results from Sunday morning have also come back clear, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. This comes after practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta'amu also tested positive on Saturday.

All of this positive momentum could lead to the Patriots and Chiefs playing their Week 4 contest on Monday. In fact, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports that during New England's team meeting that started at 10 a.m. ET, the club was informed that the current plan is to play against the Chiefs on Monday. They were also told they were set to fly out on Monday morning.

Poor Dak. Poor Jimmy G.

Jimmy Garoppolo Benched By 49ers, Making Patriots Prophecies Look All The More Preposterous

By Michael Hurley (http://boston.cbslocal.com/tag/michael-hurley/), CBS Boston
BOSTON (CBS) — There’s a lot of strange things about this little, lovable town we call home. Among them is the way in which so many people spoke about the random man out of Eastern Illinois as someone who could obviously and easily take over for the greatest quarterback of all time.
I mean … that’s just a weird thing to do, people.
We’re talking, obviously, about our former sweet prince, Jimmy Garoppolo. For whatever reason, in the midst of the Patriots reaching the Super Bowl in four out of five seasons and winning three of them, some people — fans, media members … coaching staff members (https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/pats-reportedly-offered-jimmy-g-18myear-belichick-furious-demoralized-after-trade/) — weren’t happy having Tom Brady, aka the greatest winner in the history of football, taking snaps for the team.
For many people — even after Brady’s near-perfect fourth-quarter comeback vs. the Seahawks, even after his unbelievable comeback from the 28-3 deficit vs. Atlanta, even in the middle of his unanimous MVP season of 2017 — it was time for Brady to go.
The Patriots of the future? That was Jimmy’s team.
It was a truly bizarre phenomenon.
It’s hard to sort out the actual truth from reality, based on the way certain Boston sports talk radio hosts have colored the picture, and there’s no need to go through everybody’s past statements to itemize exactly where everybody stood on the matter. But there is no doubt that some people outside of and within the organization lamented the spooky Halloween trade of Garoppolo in 2017.
Even after Brady threw for a Super Bowl-record 505 yards that season in a game the Patriots only lost because Malcolm Butler was benched, and even after Brady threw a picture-perfect pass to win the Super Bowl a year later people still thought the Patriots would have been better off if they had kept Jimmy, who at that point had thrown 94 passes in the NFL and had started two games, getting injured in the second one. He was good, yeah, but people spoke of him as if it was a foregone conclusion that he could easily perform at the game’s highest level after ousting the greatest quarterback of all time.
Anyways. Jimmy obviously headed to San Francisco, where the Niners promptly made him a very, very rich man.
And on Sunday, those same 49ers instructed Garoppolo to get off the field and sit on the sideline so that … C.J. Beathard could play quarterback for them.

Ouch.

Garoppolo was just 7-for-17 for 77 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions while taking three sacks and fumbling once in his return from an ankle injury. It was ugly, prompting Kyle Shanahan to make the move to Beathard in what turned out to be a blowout loss at home against the 1-3 Miami Dolphins.
Shanahan being a man of honor, the head coach blamed Garoppolo’s ankle injury for the poor performance.
“Watching how we were playing as a whole, watching how he was playing, you can tell he was affected by his ankle,” Shanahan said after the 43-17 loss. “I know he doesn’t normally throw the ball that way and I think he was struggling a little bit because of it. The way the game was going, I wasn’t going to keep putting him in those positions knowing we were going to have to throw it a lot to come back. I think it hurt him from being at his best.”

Hey, maybe. Sure.

But Sunday’s benching against the Dolphins merely provided the latest reminder that thriving as an NFL quarterback is extremely challenging. Very few men can really do it and sustain it, and it remains bizarre that so many in the New England region assumed that Garoppolo would have no issue doing it for a decade in Foxboro.
(Here’s where the retort of “he’d be doing better under Belichick” would come in. For one, Shanahan is an incredible offensive coach, so it’s not as if Garoppolo is in bad hands. Secondly, how is Jarrett Stidham doing under Belichick?)
To be fair, Garoppolo’s record as a starting quarterback in San Francisco remains sterling. Sunday’s loss dropped his overall record to 20-7 since 2017. Add in the 2-1 playoff record, and take a look at the overall stats (67 percent completion rate, 8.3 yards per attempt, 43 touchdowns, 23 interceptions), and Garoppolo is seemingly the quarterback of everybody’s dreams.
Really, though, Garoppolo has been good, not great. He has also missed 15 of the Niners’ 37 games since the start of the 2018 season due to injury. They made it to the Super Bowl last year, sure, but Garoppolo was merely along for the ride, throwing just 27 total passes in the team’s two wins, as the Niners racked up an absurd 471 rushing yards in two games.
And when the Niners did need him to be decent — like, say, just off the top of the dome, the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl (https://boston.cbslocal.com/2020/02/03/jimmy-garoppolo-is-no-tom-brady-leftover-super-bowl-thoughts-49ers-chiefs/) — he’s been outright bad. Garoppolo completed three of his 11 passes for 36 yards with no touchdowns, an interception, and a fourth-down sack with the Super Bowl on the line last February.
Back to Sunday: How much the ankle injury — which cost him two and a half games — affected him is impossible to quantify. Perhaps as it heals, the poor decision-poor throw one-two combos like this one will fade from existence:
But the point, really, is that during his injury absence, some media members and 49ers fans legitimately wondered if Nick Mullens might be a better option at QB for San Francisco than James Garoppolo.
That’s … Nicholas Clayton Mullens, people.
Mullens ultimately proved those folks terrifically wrong by flopping against the Eagles with two picks and four sacks, but that brief episode shows how fickle everyone can be and serves as a blunt reminder that projecting greatness for backup QBs is often a waste of everyone’s time.
Of course, none of this really affects the current-day Patriots all that much, aside from the reality that the Niners could cut Garoppolo after this season, because they’ve already paid all of his guaranteed money. And Belichick could go back and grab The One Who Got Away and the two could work together the way they dreamed back in the day. That may be a remote possibility, but it is a possibility nonetheless.
Belichick may find himself in the QB market because his post-Garoppolo succession plan for Brady hasn’t quite panned out. If not for lucking into the availability of Cam Newton on cheap money in late June, the Patriots would have entered the 2020 season with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer at quarterback. Last Monday’s loss in Kansas City painted a bleak picture of how that might have looked.
Stidham, 24, received some of the same hype that was placed upon Garoppolo after he was drafted, but his performance thus far — a seemingly impossible 41.2 percent completion rate with one touchdown and three interceptions for a brutal passer rating of 34.6 (!!!) — has certainly dampened any “heir to the QB throne” types of talks in New England. (Losing the backup job to Hoyer did a number on that quest, as well.)
Maybe Newton will end up being the long-term solution. Maybe Stidham will magically figure it out. Maybe there’s a Garoppolo reunion in the future. Nobody knows. Predicting the future is impossible.
But just in terms of looking back over history and remembering how many people truly and deeply thought that the Patriots should have gotten rid of Brady in favor of keeping Garoppolo? It was crazy then. It remains crazy now.
Jimmy G. may end up being a fine NFL starting quarterback. But he’ll never be Tom Brady. If you ever thought that he would be — for even one second — then you need to go run a lap. It’s OK. We all make mistakes. There is no shame. Even the most focused individual could get caught up in the charm and looks of football’s version of Prince Ali Ababwa (https://twitter.com/michaelFhurley/status/542323814362021888). The man can make quite an impression.
Perhaps by the time you get back, Garoppolo will be the Niners’ starting quarterback again.

4 turnovers end the season for Drew Brees and the Saints, 30-20 versus the Tampa Bay Bucs. Drew Brees is a much better Quarterback than he showed tonight. The Bucs will visit Lambeau Field to take on the GreenBay Packers for the NFC Championship.

With 4 teams left, who do think will be playing for the Superbowl ?

Patrick Mahomes, Quarterback of the Chiefs is in the concussion protocol and will be unavailable for next weeks game. As a result, I think the Buffalo Bills will win the AFC championship game and advance to the Superbowl to take on Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.
These Playoff games have been great. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

I can understand that. I always liked the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees. It was a good game in the early quarters. I figured it would come down to who could play a mistake free game. In this case, it was Brady.

Still, New Orleans had a great season.

Edit: I saw this and thought it pretty cool. Drew Brees and Tom Brady were chatting in street clothes and Tom Brady threw a " touchdown " to Baylen Brees, son of Drew Brees. Pretty cool.

The Kansas City Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl for a second straight year, looking to become the first back-to-back NFL title-holders since the New England Patriots did it after winning XXXVIII and then XXXIX in 2005 with Tom Brady under center.

I guess it's the same in NFL.

These playoff games really were epic. Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Bucs played 2 consecutive weeks against teams with marquee Quarterbacks, Dree Brees and Aaron Rodgers. Not that Tom Brady needed these games but I think his performances this season cements his position as the greatest NFL quarterback that has ever played.

I wonder how Kraft and Belichik in New England feel now ? They pretty much said that Tom Brady didn't have anything left in the tank when they let him walk.

I was pulling for Buffalo but deep down, I thought that if Patrick Mahomes played, Kansas City at home would be tough to beat.

One thing is certain, the Superbowl with Tampa Bay and Kansas City should be a great game. :yep:

Not exactly.

The thinking was that we have to rebuild the team from the ground up and Tom doesn't have enough years left to be worth rebuilding an offense around him.

The big reason he is successful now is that Tampa had already built a good O squad before he got there. An aging and patched together Patriots team, years of low draft picks plus 8-9 players opting out of the season right off the bat just meant that Tom wouldn't be going to the super bowl this year if he was still playing for NE in spite of all his talent. TB was his only chance and I don't blame him for taking it (although he is now dead to me).

We'll be back with a new QB and mostly new team next year under Bills expert tutelage and Tom will still fall off that Max Kellerman cliff some day. Does he have another year in the tank? Probably, maybe two, but I think when he finally is done it will happen suddenly without much warning.

I'm sure I don't understand or agree with some of your logic. While I agree that many players opted not to play and this had a detrimental impact on the season, there is more to it. I also agree with your assessment regarding low draft picks. However, Brady was never the most mobile Quarterback in the league although, he could run if he had to. He stayed in the pocket. Therefore, building an offense around Brady and then a new Quarterback should require little in the way of retooling.

I would agree you tailor your offense to the talents of your quarterback and other skilled players. Lamar Jackson and his running abilities in Baltimore are a prime example.

I was never a fan of New England because of how freely they cheated, i.e deflate gate and spy gate are but 2 examples for which New England and Brady was punished. You don't cheat unless you believe you will derive some benefit from it. Kraft like Jerry Jones in Dallas are slime. I'm sure you won't agree.

However, I have seen enough NFL games that Brady would be my choices for Quarterback If I needed one. New England was lucky to have Brady's services as long as they did. New England has 60 million in cap space and perhaps the opportunity to trade for a veteran quarterback. I don't doubt Belichick will rebuild with that much cash.

I'll assume that since you reside in the New England area, you probably have some insight into their workings there. That being said, we'll see how well Belechick works things out next season. I'm sure that New England will be in the thick of things next season in the AFC.

Dave, I did a break down and didn't insult you. That's fine if your local news outlets did a break down. My breakdown didn't come from a radio station, by the way. It's a matter of fact that New England Cheated. You don't have to like it. It's a fact. I tend to do this very Un-American thing. I think for myself, unlike you.

Perhaps you didn't like that I called Kraft a sleazeball. Why would I call him that other than he likes to visit, shall we say, houses of Ill repute. Was Robert Kraft not arrested for solicitation of prostitution ? I know for a fact this wasn't the first time for him. He just got caught the last time and then cried to Goddell like he always does for leniency. Name another team other in recent history that has had as many serious issues with the NFL League Offices other than the Patriots ? This is from the ownership down. Sorry Dave but if it looks and quacks like a duck, it's a duck.

Further, I said in post # 176 of this thread that I expected New England to have a good year next season, and why. I guess you didn't see that either.

I also complimented Brady calling him the greatest Quarterback that ever played. post #173 in this thread. Apparently you are too stupid to look that up as well. No it's not. The only "fact" is that the commissioner can penalize a player for an unproven allegation regardless of it's validity. Deflategate in particular was a completely made up witch hunt. I'm not going to go over all the arguments again, natural gas law and all that, but it's obvious to anyone with a brain that Brady was railroaded pure and simple. I think his outrage over being so unfairly treated was the major source of his drive to win the Lombardi trophy that year.

As for the other 'gate yeah the Patriots did violate a newly created rule, or more accurately did not stop doing what had up to then been legal before the league banned the practice, and they paid a steep price for it given it's relatively minor nature.

But just note that neither incident, which happened btw years apart, had any effect on their ability to continue winning. That's one fact that you can't deny.

By the way, Dave. I like how when Tom Brady was in New England, he was the greatest thing in the world since sliced bread, according to you. Now that he has been pushed out of New England and went to another team, he is and I quote you, ( although he is now dead to me ).

Well, I'm sure Tom Brady couldn't care less what you think of him, Dave. He will be playing in his 10th Superbowl while you will be sitting in front of your TV watching him play in the Superbowl while eating your Mars bar.

When you don't know how to read and or assimilate and correlate information, yes, you're not real bright. What concerns me more is your access to weapons and your predilection for confrontations. In my view and that of local, State and Federal authorities, that's a recipe for disaster.

I also noticed noticed that when you refer to the Patriots, you always say “ we “ won or we beat so and so. Are you a Patriots coach or Trainer ? Are you a Patriots player or even a water boy there ? If not, then you had absolutely nothing, I repeat nothing to do with with any wins by the Patriots. That being said, they, I repeat, they, being the Patriots, won Championships. You had nothing to do with it Dave other than being an unofficial cheerleader.

You always take any and all criticism of the Patriots as a personal attack on you. Why Is that ? Could it be because your life is so devoid of any meaning that you must live vicariously through Belichick, Brady, Kraft or the Patriots organization as a whole ? That explains you taking Brady's departure from New England personally. Your exact words ( Brady is dead to me ) Do you personally know Tom Brady, by chance ? I'll assume for the moment that Brady and New England didn't feel the need to clear that move with you personally. I'm sure you feel differently.

Like many here, I love sports having played Football and Ice Hockey myself. Further, my favorite sports teams didn't do well this year. While disappointing, I don't feel the sense of entitlement that you do. Know what else ? No matter how well my favorite teams do, the sun will come up tomorrow. Maybe it's time for long suffering Football teams like Cleveland or Buffalo to finally shine. I think so along with their fans.

Maybe your time would be better served in getting a life and not living through the Patriots or kissing their rear ends and worshiping them. If you choose to worship them, that's fine too. I just don't think it's necessary or appropriate to expect us to indulge in your warped views. Either way, keep your bs to yourself.

My apologies Dave if I seem rude and or condescending. However, because of the attitude that you have always perpetuated here, you invite rude and condescending tones and attitudes. It would be rude of me not to accept.

This Superbowl should be one for the ages. Brady looks the same as he did 10 years ago or earlier. I see little if any drop off compared to when Brady was in New England. This is Brady's 21st season and who knows how much longer he will play. It's hard to believe that Brady was a 6th round draft pick and 199th overall. Talk about a steal.

Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City are both excellent. They were last season as well. Tom Brady will be playing in his home stadium and I think the Bucs and Brady will be hard to beat. It will probably come down to which team can play mistake free. It should be a great game. :)

No commercials this year for: https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/why-coke-pepsi-and-budweiser-are-not-advertising-during-the-super-bowl/ar-BB1d4OFQ?ocid=BingNews

Coke, Pepsi and Budweiser have all announced that they will not be running commercials during the Super Bowl.

Coke, Pepsi and Budweiser have all historically taken Super Bowl ad spots, shelling out millions of dollars to have their 30-second commercial air during the match.

But this year, the three beverage giants will not be forking out $5.5 million for 30 seconds during the broadcast on CBS from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on February 7.

It comes as brands as approach the first COVID-era Super Bowl with caution. Paul Argenti, Dartmouth College professor of corporate communications, told AP: "We have a pandemic that is casting a pall over just about everything. It's hard to feel the exuberance and excitement people normally would."

Gathering-Since Super Bowl is one of US biggest sports event I guess you don't sit alone and watch it, I guess you are together with others.
First eat then watch it with nachos and other goodies.

I know some people have a big party. Most of the time, it seems like, I'm working that day.

There really is no tried and true recipe for Superbowl Sunday, Markus. It's really on what you and your guests like and preferences. I have seen friends use recipes or dishes based on their ethnicity, like pierogi's. For my group, like nikimcbee said, pizza and a barbecue is a good way to go. I also like to make a batch of Chili along with all the chips and beverages. Throw in Tortilla chips and Salsa and you are ready to rock.

Anti-acids like tums, rolaids and Pepto Bizmo are also available upon request, as needed and you will need them.:D I used to make what I termed " Firehouse Chili. " However, after multiple people ended up with 2nd degree burns on their tongue, The State Dept. classified my Chili as a weapon of mass destruction and issued me a cease and desist order. :D

Unfortunately, because of Covid concerns, I don't expect Superbowl celebrations to be large this year. :yep:

Enjoy the Superbowl, Marcus and everyone else.

Yes. I miss those days when the weather was just part of the game. I miss the frigid snowy midwinter set-to's between Minnesota Vikes and Greenbay Packers in the open air stadiums on daddy's rabbit-eared black and white tv...and I've been in '70's Greenbay papermill plants trukkin' when it's blastin' off Lake Michigan in January; pure misery at -30F. !

I really thought the game would be the exact opposite. I'm thinking this is only the second superbowl where one team failed to score a touchdown.

What a waste of time that was unless you are a Tom Brady fan that is :o

I wonder if the DUI wreck causing injury to two young children ... that the KC coach had in KC the weekend before had anything to do with a curse on the team ... at least a jinx.

Not even one touchdown

Tampa Bay 31 vs KC 9

I thought yesterday's Superbowl would have been a much better and competitive game. Tamp Bay had Mahomes completely rattled and he never did regain his composure. Mahomes was running for his life most of the game.

Although most of the attention was on Brady, give credit to the Bucs defense for containing Mahomes and Tyreek Hill. I also think the Offensive and Defensive coordinators deserve a lot of credit along with Head Coach Bruce Arians.

Congratulations Tampa Bay.

Tom Brady completes pass with Lombardi Trophy before being helped off boat

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/feb/11/tom-brady-lombardi-trophy-throw-tampa-bay-celebration-tequila

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers held a boat parade on Wednesday to celebrate their first NFL title in 18 years on a sun-splashed day with thousands of fans lining the Hillsborough River near downtown Tampa.

At one point, Brady was captured on video tossing the NFL’s Lombardi Trophy from his boat across the water to Cameron Brate in another boat. That brought wild cheers from fans and players.

Tom Brady drinks Tequila :o

Brady was later helped off the boat, something he blamed on the celebrations. “Nothing to see her...just litTle avoCado tequila,” he tweeted.
