The fire broke out on Saturday afternoon.

Police in the Czech Republic are investigating a fire that killed 11 people, including three children.

Saturday's blaze, in a block of flats in the north-eastern town of Bohumin, has been described as the worst fire in the country's history.

Six people died in the blaze and another five were killed after jumping from an 11th floor balcony in an attempt to escape the flames.

Ten people, including two firemen and a police officer, were injured.

Bohumin is on the Czech-Polish border, some 300km (190 miles) east of the capital, Prague.

A death trap. The fire in Grenfell Tower (UK) came up quickly. Apparently according to the article, the police have arrested a man.

Terrible! I notice in the picture that the tower doesn't seem to have flammable "cladding" like Grenfell Tower did, so I wonder how the fire spread. Maybe the interior had too many wooden materials? That has been a factor in other high rise fires. Flammable furnishings can be lethal, even if the exterior of a building is concrete/brick.

I hope they change fire codes as a result (here in the US, it always takes tragedies for changes in code to be made - unfortunately).

It is precisely the case that in many cases "major accidents" are necessary before there is a change in a positive direction, unfortunately!
