Belarus?
Belarus, Israel, Mexico, Florida. He works with oil and palette knife exclusively, his technique is unmistakable. I love his pictures of rivers, parks and couples in parks most. His expressive use of colours sometimes is a bit kitschy, but often it remainds me of dream landscape and their unique attraction, I just love it, I get lost in it, and it triggers strong emotional reactions in me. A certain kind of mediterranean melancholy, or a mix of joy and melancholy you often have in French movies.
He has his own platform, but the much more complete gallery there once was, unfortunately is gone.
These I have in my home, both are amongst his most-known, though he varied the basic motive in dozens of pictures: river, night promenade, park, couple, autumn. Its an endless motive in his work.

Not before now I learned of his death, last August, it seems?! :o
Dont know where I learned about him, somewhere online. It was one painting that immediately reminded me of a fire and candle lit garden landscape at midnight from a dream I once had and remembered for long time, because I loved it so, and felt so paradisically happy and completeley arrived in it. If I would give an idea of what afterlife should feel like, that dream would be it, and if I would be certain that death is like that scene, I would not be around here anymore since many years. That painting incredibly directly connected to me, like being struck by lightning. It was a revelation. I do not have it, unfortunately, also not the title. Searching for it again later on led me to collecting many downloads of his paintings from across the web, like those above, but the one I looked up I never foud again. Thos edownloaded images I have by the dozens.
Quite poetic a story, in a way, isn'T it. :)

The moment that you first lose sight of land and are alone with your boat, surrounded by nothing but sea and sky, is a powerful experience for any sailor and one that cannot be truly described until it is experienced. As anyone who has reached that moment will tell you, it is not something to be undertaken lightly, even if you are only traveling port to port. Any sailing excursion requires planning and attention to safety, but ocean sailing requires a great deal more thought and preparation. You have to take what you need from land with you, plan for the unexpected, and be prepared for all sorts of setbacks.

You can't talk about sailing without the mention of Vito Dumas, circumnavigator of the world in WWII (twice).
When he got through the first time the war ws still going on so he did the same trip in reverse.
"Lucky are those that can escape the dreariness of everyday life"
"How many reach the end without ever having lived"
Vito Dumas
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vito_Dumas
On 27 June 1942, while the world was in the depths of World War II, he set out on a single-handed circumnavigation of the Southern Ocean. He left Buenos Aires in June, sailing LEHG II, a 31-foot ketch an acronym representing "four names which marked my life". He had only the most basic and makeshift gear; he had no radio, for fear of being shot as a spy, and was forced to stuff his clothes with newspaper to keep warm.
With only three landfalls, the legs of his trip were the longest that had been made by a single-hander, and in the most ferocious oceans on the Earth; but most of all, it was a powerful retort to a world which had chosen to divide itself by war. He recounted the experience in his book Los Cuarenta Bramadores: La Vuelta al Mundo Por la "Ruta Imposible" (Alone Through The Roaring Forties).
He donated his boat to the Argentine Navy for training, but after a few years it was neglected, and was finally wrecked against a pier at the entrance of La Plata's port in 1966.
A wealthy Argentine yachtsman paid to have it restored and donated it to the Argentina Naval Museum in Tigre, a coastal river town on a backwater of the River Plate.
The LEHG II is now on display in Tigre, which is a short train ride from Buenos Aires.

^ ^very nice photos and stories!
The mediterranean sea is beautiful, surrounded by interesting and nice places (some not quite as nice, as in the Levante.. like recently near Beirut :03:).
I have mixed feelings when it comes to sailing there, it can be beautiful, and like in the baltic you do not have to take tides into account, but if unlucky you can have dead calms for days or weeks (summer) or you can have the most violent storms. Not that we did not also have the latter in the baltic, but the "wine-dark seas" of the med (hello Aktung) are a bit special as we found out.
It is better to prepare every day and thoroughly look for the weather forecasts, when you are the skipper i found the responsibility takes a bit away from the fun ..

And the AC75 for the next America's Cup has me pretty excited. The 34th Cup was a blast to watch, but I found the 35th to be fairly boring, as the SailGP series had very similar boats, and moving it to Bermuda killed a lot the draw for me. But these new boats for the next one really have me stoked.

:arrgh!::hmmm:.
The United States Congress (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Congress) authorized the original six frigates of the United States Navy with the Naval Act of 1794 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Act_of_1794) on March 27, 1794, at a total cost of $688,888.82. These ships were built during the formative years of the United States Navy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy), on the recommendation of designer Joshua Humphreys (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Humphreys) for a fleet of frigates (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frigate) powerful enough to engage any frigates of the French (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Navy) or British (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy) navies yet fast enough to evade any ship of the line (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_the_line).

https://i.postimg.cc/brBf8tWr/HMS-Trincomalee-at-Hartlepool-2010.jpg (https://postimages.org/)Either way: that's a whole lotta serious friggin' goin' on! I built models of the USS Constitution and wrote my first term paper in highschool about her...the advanced concept of the American frigate's reinforced construction is featured greatly in the movie Master and Commander where the French vessel, Acheron, is a formidable opponent like Old Ironsides, seriously outclassing traditional British frigates (Lucky Jack Aubrey's HMS Surprise) of the period in number of guns, caliber and weight-of-metal in a single broadside. Bottom Line; a 44 gun American frigate with 30 24-pounder main battery seriously outclassed the traditional frigate of opposing navies with 18 pounder main batteries-and that didn't include the nasty secondary top deck Scottish carronade 'smashers' https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/54/2006Boston088.jpg/220px-2006Boston088.jpg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2006Boston088.jpg) for close-in work.... This can be a VERY rough passage. We watch the weather and sail directly 6 days offshore from the Exumas to the Caribbean. We start in Staniel Cay in the Exuma Islands installing our new battery bank, then set sail for the Caribbean. This is often a tough offshore passage as the winds are predominantly on the nose.

Good advice and nice films
I certainly like the tall ships, great to see - still have to visit Vasa !
Regarding anchoring we had some bad luck once in the baltic, after a day of sunny sailing with enough wind, no storm or bad weather forecast, no falling barometre, we anchored a thousand meters east from Moen's Klint, ground was also said to be good.
So we routinely secured everything, bathed, prepared dinner and went to bed at 11 pm or so. Still all was looking good, but we left two guards on deck as usual.
At 1 a.m. i felt the boat was really working in the waves, lots of hissing in the steel ropes, we had wind from the east so the coast was in lee, and the anchor did not hold. (was a charter boat, i think a Bavaria 42)
So we got up, had to heave the anchor, started the engine to steam up to it and then trying to get it off the ground, somehow stuck but we made it.
Followed a bad night staying clear from coasts and other ships, always going down to mark the position on the charts, while getting water through the hatch every time you opened it, waves five meters and more. Took 8 hours to get less wind and 24 hours until it came back to 'normal'.
I was not the skipper, we were happy to have a lot of other capable sailors among us.
Still do not understand how we did not see or notice any harbinger of such bad weather before. Ok only Kiel radio for forecasts, Decca instead GPS, no internet and so on, but .. :hmmm:

Growing uo as a child in San Francisco, I was used to see all sorts of sailing craft in the SF Bay, but there was one craft which got my attention at a very early age; my grandfather would indulge my fascination with ships and trains by taking me to the Embarcadero waterfront, then still an active commercial freight/passenger terminal where I could see the ships arriving, departing, and being loaded and unloaded; I remember vividly the shuttle trains running between the piers to carry unloaded cargo away or to bring in cargo to load for export, and the bustle of the stevedores and longshoremen in and around the ships, the cacophony of shouts and calls in several different languages; but there was on craft that took my interest for many years and it was landlocked at the beach end of Golden Gate Park...

The ship Gjøa was on exhibit at the Park for decades and had a spotty history of pride and neglect, which I witnessed over the years; when my grandfather first took me there he told me the ship had been to the North Pole, which I found to be an awe-inspiring fact; it wasn't until later years that I learned the full and fascinating story of just how historic and important that little ship really was in modern history:

The ship Gjøa was on exhibit at the Park for decades and had a spotty history of pride and neglect, which I witnessed over the years; when my grandfather first took me there he told me the ship had been to the North Pole, which I found to be an awe-inspiring fact; it wasn't until later years that I learned the full and fascinating story of just how historic and important that little ship really was...The boat's name was a psychological ploy to boost moral in the crew. The Franklin expedition disaster still fresh in everyone's minds fifty years on, better than naming it Støppa! :arrgh!:

THIS would a be a dream, if I don't give up after 5 days without WiFi and access to the outside world. It would be an excellent place to quarantine! :DThe longest sailing I have done is four months with two stops for bunkering ... and it was a fairly compressed journey. And this happened without what we have today computer, mobile phone everything was paper charts and sextant and navigation of stars and a half good VHF radio and analog radio..no radar, or GPS pure stone age or sonar was there, only one vindex was, which is highest up in the mast to see the direction of where the wind is coming from. The boat was equipped with an inboard engine of 15 horsepower, which in favorable conditions could reach 5.2 knots and in high and rough seas one knot.

Even the most daunting world records are meant to be broken… eventually. For elite navigator Stan Honey and a crew of sailing all-stars, beating the prestigious monohull transatlantic sailing record was the ultimate accomplishment. And it was no easy feat. On July 22, 2016, the Comanche—a custom-built, 100-foot racing yacht—set sail from New York to the southern tip of England. Precisely five days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 25 seconds later, the Comanche’s crew shattered the world record … by more than a day. Brave the high seas as we set sail on one of the most amazing and inspiring journeys ever to take place on film.

Although it may seem crazy to sail around the world, once you analyze the various wind patterns and hurricane seasons and with a bit of planning it’s quite reasonable for anyone with a sense of adventure to do the same. There’s lots of ways to sail around the world. If you’re racing, you often use storms in the southern ocean to propel you along. It’s a completely different approach. One that requires serious boats that are built for those conditions. We on the other hand sail around the world by staying more or less in the trade wind belts. This stacks the odds in our favour. We often have the wind and waves behind, pushing us along and stay warm in the non-stop tropical conditions.

Caligula's private yacht ( one of them ). 2 recovered from Lake Nemi in Italy and restoration started by Mussolini.
Destroyed during WW2, either accidentedly.....or deliberately ( a lot of controversy ).
Only ashes remain of these GIANT ships.
Definitely on my bucket list.

Some hairy situations entering narrow harbour entrances .. i remember entering the harbour at Gedser (Falster) in storm. While we were lucky and stopped and moored right at the head of a landing stage, another boat was blown between two stages and not able to turn, with wind coming strong from behind.
While trying to turn, the plastic hull was pressed sideways against a pole, and literally folded around it, leaving a big 'kink' in the side, with splintering deck and a lot of other damage.
After seeing this i prefer to ride it out on sea under such conditions..
All those clips of sail boats in distress reminded me of something I saw when I was kid in San Francisco; there used to be a huge structure called the Sutro Baths on the Pacific side of SF, right near and below what is called Land's End; right of the shore to the West is a grouping of Rocks known as Seal Rocks (its easy to guess why it has that name) and the shoreline around that area and to the North has been the site of several shipwrecks, some of them major and fatal, owing to the often turbulent waters; the Sutro Baths was a glassed-in building built in the 1890s as an indoor mammoth series of salt water swimming and bathing pools; in later years, the pools were converted to indoor ice skating rinks, which is what I knew them as growing up in the 1950s; there were all sorts of observation decks located all over the West end of the building, facing out into the Pacific; one day, I was looking through one of the telescopes (IIRC, abut 5 cents for about 10 minutes of viewing) when there was a sudden agitation in the people off to one side of myself; they were pointing out to the ocean and I turned the telescope in the direction of the pointing; there was a sailing fishing boat and it had lost its main topmast and was dragging the wreckage on its port side; people in the Baths watched, horrified, as the boat drifted towards the rocks, then disappeared behind them; it eventually emerged past the rock, but was obviously further damaged; people were calling out for the building security people to call the authorities about the wreck; some ran off to find pay phones (no cell phones in those days) to make emergency calls; the boat limped further northward and disappeared beyond the point...
In the nearly 60 years since that happened, I don't recall what the ultimate fate was of the fishing boat and I don't recall any news reports of casualties, so my best guess is it either managed to limp into the Bay on its own or was aided by some local or Federal rescuers; still, the sight of seeing the crippled boat disappear behind the Seal Rocks and reappear damaged is still a strong memory...

^ to each his own.. you do not let the autohelm steer a ship in those conditions, and not run it with a course perpendicular to the waves coming from behind when the boat may lose rudder control by overtaking waves.
And let the lines lie around in the cockpit like that? Good seamanship is something else :hmmm:

Now that is hard-core. I'd go mad before we even reached the Bay of Biscay, it took Uboats maybe a month and a half to round the Cape of Good Hope, imagine how long that would take on that!
Definitely not for me!

For those not knowing racing sims: Stefano Casillo is the founder of Kunos Simulazioni and was the lead programmer behind Assetto Corsa and AC Competizione (he has meanwhile left Kunos). If he indeed does realise this sailing project (of which he repeatedly has spoken of over the past years, it seems to be kind of a love affair of his), then you can take it for granted that realistic physics rank very high on the list of priorities in such a project: those who know racing sims know why I say that. And the physics of realistic interaction between water and boat and wind is a tricky, or better a complex and very dynamic thing. Not easy to get it right, I think. If somebody will, then him.
He does live development sessions on Twitch. Same for his temporary return to tweaking the AIs in both Assetto Corsas
