Made this last night to get some new insight. Hopefully it will be useful to others too. Input is very much appreciated, if I overlooked something.

Very handy.
That being said, the DD's in game can hear you as soon as you go above 1kts. Best way to avoid DD's ( if you use external cam which is a bit cheating) is dive as deep as you can, check their circle (1 or 2 circle, one stationary {listens})
Sneak away out of the circle preferably when they are on the farthest side of the circle behind you, at a steady 1kts speed. .
Do NOT, under no circumstance change speed. That is the surest way to get killed. And, use decoys sparingly.
Unless you know how to hide in their baffles or explosions).

Yes it is bit of a challenge, since you have two things: How avoidance is in real life and how it is in the game. I think that in game it is more harder for several reasons:
1) Depth charges do not distort ASDIC/hydrophone. In reality I have seen figures from 1-15 min window that escorts are blinded by the water distortion.
2) Escorts hear very well. I think if you go to 2kn at 5000m range they will hear you. On the other hand, in the game your crew under silent running are almost just as loud with footsteps and whispering callouts, while IRL you could hear a pin drop in the submarine.
3) Continuing about DD hydrophones: I believe the game does not identify such situation that even if you are below a destroyer going 20 kn and you are going 6 kn, they will still hear you. While I assume that you should be drowned under the sound of the DD.
4) Thermal layer. We aren't even sure if it is in the game. It almost feels like some kind of legend of which there are only stories.
5) ASDIC in the game feels a whole lot different than IRL.

In beginning of the war the few DD with ASDIC had only the searchlight. The Q and Sword came in 1943. There are even questions if Sword saw much action in the war... Anyway, imagine trying yourself to find a sub with a 16 degree search light beam. Every ASDIC ping you sent you have to receive until you move on. Imagine having that narrow of a flashlight in pitch dark. In the game it often feels that DD have the end war ASDIC from day 1.
Final interesting fact: If sub is at 172m depth, attacking ASDIC will lose him at 1000m range. If the DD is going at 15 kn, this will give the sub 2 min 20 sec until DD is overhead. This 2 min 20 sec is time sub can evade without DD knowing it. Of course here having another DD being useful, comes in.
