Hi,
I'm doing a new campaign in good ol' Aces of the Deep, starring kapitän Friedrich Wolfgang. I'm playing on hardest difficulty setting with DiD(dead is dead) rules, which means if I die or get captured, it's over. So far I have only uploaded patrol 3 and 4. Sadly I don't have video of patrol 1 and 2, only some screenshots and text of what happened - it was after patrol 2 I thought maybe it would be fun to record the rest of the patrols. Sorry for the horrible editing. :haha:

bigbear!:Kaleun_Salute: WOLFPACK still in developement and getting good. All games have issues, incl Aces of the Deep(still the best:yeah:) Besides as a fellow retiree! we have an obligation to support the economy during lockdown!:Kaleun_Thumbs_Up: Aces of the Deep is still the best? Gosh, I had forgotten all about that one! I think I still have it somewhere and I see there is an important mod for it. Why is it better than SH3 or 5?
No sooner do I say it in a welcome post- 2 days ago... then U show up and back me up! :arrgh!: love the music!

Glad you like it - was not sure if anyone really cared about this kind of content. I fully agree that AOTD is a masterpiece, and it still surprises me how some parts of the game are still better than most modern WW2 sub sims :)

Is there any way to change the thread title to "AOTD - Story/Campaign of Friedrich Wolfgang", or something similar? My first title is pretty bad, and it probably makes people think there is some new kind of campaign to Aces of the Deep :D.

Awesome, thanks! don't know how I have missed that.
I will switch to it for further playing - that said, I can't guarantee that this campaign will have it, since patrols up to 8 were recorded during the summer, and I won't spoil how many more patrols were taken by then, or if I died. :03:

Just got an "Intercept convoy at....." message from BdU. Map shows a pack forming at the convoy and they're providing beacons on the convoy. But my transit is slowed by a fog bank ! Fourteen other subs made up the pack.
What a great game ! :up: Has so many features that I so wish would have made it into SH3 too.

Have one circling me while a destroyer that got me on radar is closing at 30+ knots. I think it's time to crash dive !Ya ignorant bugger! that's probably a Martlet if before January 1944!!:D :know:, Even before the Wildcat had been purchased by the U.S. Navy, the French Navy and the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm (FAA) had ordered the Wildcat, with their own configurations, via the Anglo-French Purchasing Board. The F4F initially known in British service as the Martlet was taken on by the FAA as an interim replacement for the Fairey Fulmar. The Fulmar was a two-seat fighter with good range but operated at a performance disadvantage against single-seater fighters. Navalised Supermarine Spitfires were not available because of the greater need of the Royal Air Force.[14][page needed] In the European theater, its first combat victory was on Christmas Day 1940, when a land-based Martlet destroyed a Junkers Ju 88 bomber over the Scapa Flow naval base.[15] This was the first combat victory by a US-built fighter in British service in World War II.[15]
The type also pioneered combat operations from the smaller escort carriers.[16] Six Martlets went to sea aboard the converted former German merchant vessel HMS Audacity in September 1941 and shot down several Luftwaffe Fw 200 Condor bombers during highly effective convoy escort operations.[17][18] These were the first of many Wildcats to engage in aerial combat at sea. The British received 300 Eastern Aircraft FM-1s giving them the designation Martlet V in 1942–43 and 340 FM-2s, (having changed to using the same name as the US) as the Wildcat VI.[19] Nearly 1,200 Wildcats were flown by the FAA and by January 1944, the Martlet name was dropped and the type was identified as the Wildcat.[20][16][N 2] In March 1945, Wildcats shot down four Messerschmitt Bf 109s over Norway, the FAA's last Wildcat victories

Likewise ! It's gameplay/attention to detail is head and shoulders above SH3.
No question about that! When you contact a convoy and radio in and watch those other boats move to form a pack-wow! I like to start in "The Happy Times" with a IID, my current career, U115.

:up: And the escorts and aircraft tactics, behavior, etc. is modeled much better so they're something to be feared vs. the creampuffs in SH3.

Was wondering how one goes about getting Aces of the Deep? Im on a modern computer but I see they have an emulator called DosBox just finding that its very difficult trying to find this classic game. I even tried looking for the windows version called Command Aces of the Deep and thats non existent.

You don't want CAOD. It's buggy. eBay usually has AOD on it at times.

Thanks, I will have to keep my eyes open for a copy. It sounds like a fun little gem of a game and I'll make sure to steer clear of the windows version. Nothing beats some classic games especially if its as detailed as this one looks. Shame they just don't make 'em like they use too.

If you know the history/tactics of the Battle of the Atlantic, it's all simulated in the game. In many respects, simulated better than in SH3.
The only thing that really bugs me about it is you'll run into a lot of single tankers to sink.
Not that they didn't exist in real life, but theres a few to many in the game.
Also, unless you know how to do the hex edits (not hard) for the game mentioned on this site, you have to start off in a Type II (like the actual commanders had to).
John Pancoast
03-22-21, 08:54 PM
Btw, the escorts and aircraft in AOD are much more accurately portrayed in terms of abilities, skill, tactics, etc. than in Sh3.
In short, if you use the tactics/mindset in AOD that you do in SH3, you'll get sunk every time. :D

Thats quite alright with me, I plan on cranking the realism up to max and learning as I go. That's one thing I wish sh3 had better and thats a better Ai. I give the modding community credit they try their best and I thank them for it but there's only so much they can do.
Have to look on ebay while I'm at it for a floppy disk drive. I realized even if I somehow find a copy on ebay my computer has no way of reading a floppy :haha:
The one moment where I wish they had a digital alternative but then again look how far we have come since the VHS and dial-up Internet days. Man there is moments when I realize I'm getting older...

Try to find the boxed cd-rom version of AOD; it has lots of nice features. Video interviews, history, tactics, paper map, real manual, etc. Worth the price just for that part.
And of course, easier to install.
In short, if you use the tactics/mindset in AOD that you do in SH3, you'll get sunk every time. :D
I had the opposite experience :) After getting used to night surface attacks in AOD, I tried it in SH3 only to be detected and fired upon from far longer range than escorts should realistically be able to see me...
Uderwater though, it was exactly that - after AOD escorts, SH3 ones felt like minor nuisance.

Get the $29 version, top one on the list. Works perfectly on Win 7 computer, just like the old game did in the day.
The first loading is slow-like wait and wait, then it begins to install and the rest is history. I have dealt with the dealer before on items, very trustworthy.

Thanks seems like it was his last copy available I order it can’t wait to try it out. I’ll try and get myself the dos version also for all the goodies that box comes with
Now it comes as a CD, if you got the game from my source. I still have all the original paperwork that came back in the day.
If you got CAoD, you don't need the expansion pack in the download section here at Subsim, it is already part of the game. If you don't have the "Quick Reference", very important , download it at the download section at Subsim.
Also if you lack a Kriegsmarine grid map, you can hunt and pec for the mission grid on the chart in game, or download the grid map here at the download section at subsim.:subsim:
Any problems or questions post and someone will respond. REMEMBER-it is a mid 90's game and graphics. Like many games then, they are not perfect.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Looks like a great game with a lot of depth I’ll take that over graphics any day of the week. Some of the bugs CAOD has are:
- engine sound doesn't change at different speeds.
- ctd when wolfpack spawns.
- ctds for various other reasons. (google if desired).
- various minor graphical glitches. I.e., the "cable" for the periscope doesn't extend the full length.
Post when you get some of these. Who knows maybe they can be looked at these days.
The engine noise does not change and sometimes it goes silent, but comes back on.
Never had a CD when a wolfpack spawns in all these years.
It is a mid 90's game-yes it will have glitches-all that are not an issue. Save game is your friend. Reload and problems gone. This includes sound issues and graphic issues.
Seriously John, who has time to look for that kinda stuff-you need a new hobby.:Kaleun_Cheers:
It was the very best of its time IMO. It is the gameplay that counts.

May, 1943, foggy night, Western Approaches. Submerged at 180 meters. Contact a convoy, call in pack, sink one ship myself. Forced to dive. Many game hours later, cannot shake a three ship Hunter-Killer group. Unlike Sh3, an AOD H-K group is something to be feared.
Doesn't help I took propeller shaft damage and its making noise. :) Radio out, outer bow torpedo doors and fore hydroplanes damaged and unrepairable at sea also.

It was quite some time ago since I configured my dosbox settings so I don't remember all my changes, although I don't think they were many. Here are my sdl and render sections.

Well, it's a 1994 dos game; the graphics are what they are, no real difference anyway it is run.
Here's mine. I run dosbox on a laptop with a 16/9 aspect ratio though so to keep things in the 4/3 ratio the game is meant to be run at I use below.
This give black borders but it looks better at 4/3 anyway; view is squished vertically at full screen 16/9:

fulldouble=false
fullresolution=desktop
windowresolution=original
output=opengl
autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
