Dear forum,

I have SH4 at 1.5 with fall of the rising sun at 1.1

I have had a recurring issue whereby I hit a ship with a torpedo and the pillar of flames appears to repeat and set a line in the water rather than the flames staying with the ship. Seen in both camera mode and through the scope

is this a known problem and if so, is there any fix that can be applied please

That occurs when you hit a fuel bunker on the ship. It leaks, floats on the water, and catches fire. Usually speaking, that will not adversely affect a ship's floatability too much since the water displaces the fuel, though it can if there is other "structural" damage (loss of hit points), and there is that hole in the ship...

i wondered if something like that was occurring,

however, the flame seems to move down through the ship and then off the ship.. it appears to be static at the point of impact rather than moving with the ship. However, every time the flames 'generate' it goes again if that makes sense.

Where else would you want the fire to start? The point of impact is where the "hole" is. Fuel oil floats on water. If the fuel is on fire, it will burn until it is consumed. The game is attempting to simulate that. It also attempts to simulate "fire control", where there would be people on that 3D ship, attempting to stop the leaks, both into and out of the ship. Sometimes, things break while they're are affecting repairs, and you have another release of fuel and fire...

Things are "simulated" in the game, and to show a piece of armour plate flying off the ship does not result in a commensurate hole in the ship. Same with the flames. That would be an immense amount of work for each ship, not failing to mention the impact on the computer system having to "calculate" all of the "damage" and "repairs". A node has a "Big_Fire" associated with it (as an example), and the damage model uses it for several different "style" of effects, depending upon the hit points received. If you look at it from the side through the periscope, it is rather convincing. If you instead "zoom" with the external camera, and basically "see the stage", then of course it won't look correct. Don't look up at the columns of smoke coming off the fires while you are "on the stage", because you'll see that the smoke does strange stuff when you're up close. It is the nature of the game. We're gonna have the bouncers knock you one if you keep climbing on the stage and trying to get ahold of the actors and musicians... :arrgh!:

here is what I'm seeing.

Hopefully picture attaches!

That is what happens in the game. There is nothing wrong there. You hit a fuel bunker, it leaks and the fuel burns. The fuel, being the free spirit that it is, leaves the ship and continues burning for the time frame that the "artist" of the game or mod that made the fire desires it to...

Doesn't display like that i'm afraid.
This .gif (hopefully) better illustrates how the fire starts at points of impact and effectively moves down the boat as the boat continues to move forward.

nice vids!

yes, that is pretty typical of burning debris and fuel.
and yes, it is also pretty typical for a fire to start in one compartment and then spread below decks to other areas of the ship.
the item that the AI does not simulate well is setting watertight integrity which would help to prevent fires from spreading.
it IS a simulation...you can't have everything.:03:
