I was just wondering how common it was to have the Flakvierling on U-boats that were patrolling as opposed to the 3.7 cm Flak M42?

I am also talking about boats who were primarily patrolling boats, not the U-Flak boats.

U-537 on October 23 1943. Note the absence of the U-boat’s Flakvierling 38 flexible quadruple 20mm anti-aircraft gun mount.

Apparently it was far less common to have a quad 20mm than a single 37mm, but it did happen: https://uboat.net/technical/flak.htm

Some boats had the 3.7cm gun removed and featured the quadruple 2cm 38/43 U with shield.

I can’t find any pictures of non-u-flak u-boats with the flakvierling other than the one of U-745 at the link above.

If you’re debating with yourself about wether to use the flakvierling, I say go for it. Unless all the AI u-boats have one as well, you’re still being perfectly historically authentic, at least if you’re using a type VII boat.

That is pretty much it. Sometimes I feel like the game is just a little too easy. Or it is at least too easy to have the most upgraded u-boat for the times.

But then again, I just ragequit because I got smoked by a Liberator while I was xferring torpedoes from the external stores. :k_confused:

Maybe, I just need to take a break. :Kaleun_Cheers:

According to Rössler, Volume 2, the quadruple 2cm C/38 was installed as of June 1943, with about 20% of the boats fitted with one, by spring 1944.

The 3.7cm M42 was first installed on 4 boats in October 1943, gradually replacing the quadruple 2cm C/38, as of spring 1944.
