By not being able to see the three sides that are hidden, we would have to assume that they are complete. No thanks, I'm not falling for it. :yep:
Also, we're supposed to ponder how to complete a 3D image by staring at a 2D picture- for all we know, if we stare at it long enough it turns into Lincoln's head. :o Again, no thanks. I'm not going to embrace voodoo or witchcraft just to solve a puzzle.

Think the problem through, you've been in this situation before:
Your Significant Other appears in the room while you were doing something important, such as sending positive vibes to the Dodgers, holding two dresses and says, "Which one makes me look thinner?".
Only noobs answer that kind of question (and inevitably wind up on the wrong side of a three day staring contest) . :o
BTW, the answer is "one". Since the incomplete cube is made of complete cubes, just take one complete cube, put it in your pocket, and walk away. :up:

Aktung got it right off; when I first posted this on Face Book there was lots of talk about removing cubes and other smart-alec lateral thinking (ET2SN) but the plain truth is of course that a whole extra layer of little cubes is needed there on the top to make this into a proper cube
Now where did I put those nuts...

Top layer is 16
2nd layer is 2 more 18
3rd layer is 3 more than 2nd 21
4th layer is 4 more than 3rd 25
16 +18 +21 +25 =80
100 - 80 =20
Missing row =25

Whatever you can make a bigger cube by adding more cubes. The question was not how many needed to make the smallest cube :shucks:

The question implies adding blocks to "complete" a full cube, not have a full cube, and so implying that the cube desired is incomplete at the start. The answer remains 45 and Aktungbby gets to see your nuts. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:
