View Full Version : Shelling out to Win 10 desktop - uncommanded

What would cause SH4 to randomly shell out to the Win10 desktop without any user input or dialogue boxes from other programs? This isn't a CTD; SH4 continues running. On the second patrol of a new career after deleting the Save folder when upgrading FotRSUE, I'm already having issues with FTLs - presumably related to this.

Win10 will shell out periodically for its own esoteric reasons. some background TSR decides it's time to jack around with a user and...boom.
neither you nor any other SH4 Kaleun can do anything about it except save your game after it happens, exit, and re-enter the game and your savefile.
what is an FTL, please?

Failures To Load.
Thanks for the explanation.

Do you play in Fullscreen or Window mode? In the latter case SH4 may often change to desktop for the reasons explained by KM. Change to Fullscreen.

I play exclusively in full screen.
The game is now so unstable that I can barely get to the assigned patrol zone before it CTDs. This is only the second patrol since upgrading to the latest version of FotRSUE, though I think the shelling out is the responsible issue. Guess I'll have to do a complete SH4 system wipe and reinstall. How I'm going to prevent it happening again remains to be seen.

playing in full screen is table stakes. no one should think about playing otherwise at this point of time. SH4 was never meant to be played alt-tabbing in and out to other apps.
i do not think that your SH4 installation is the the cause of the CTD's so you may want to wait on the re-install.
the frequency of unexpected Win10 shell-outs may be caused by some of the other programs that are loaded at boot time. keep in mind that Win10 as an operating system allows programs to interact and control the input and output devices as well as storage. we blame Win10 because it is easy but the root cause may be another app running under windows. for example, Dell Backup sometimes pops up in the middle of my doing something else.
here is a link that shows how you can cut down on the programs that are loaded at startup.

i suggest that you review what gets loaded at boot time. you may be able to eliminate many of the interrupting programs by following this process.

Only nine programs were active, now down to six. Here's hoping that does it.
Thanks!

Hum, Mios, I can read nowhere that you have installed or the LAA patch or the 4GB Patch for the game (1 of these 2). Did you so? If not then it's no surprise that after installing heavy mods the game will crash.

He hasn't said if he is running Win 10 32bit or the 64bit, if 32bit is being used that LAA patch or the 4GB Patch is not going to work.

64 bit (Win 10 Pro) with LAA enabled.
No mods other than FotRSUE 1.1 and text edits to number of bow torpedo reloads (Tench upgrade) and officers. None of the CTDs had any apparent connection to the edits.

you shouldn't need any officer edits for the boats with v1.1 now...
