Maybe a strange question, but I'm wondering if anyone has (recently) loaded up the game and played a career in pure vanilla mode. I suppose this means no SHC :(...
I'm thinking about it, as I never really played the game without mods..

Just finishd a vanilla *based* career. Based as in I used the stock sensors, weapons/equipment (depth charges, etc.) and environment.
Lot of the rest was modded.

I believe SHC refers to SH3 Commander. Re my 8k campaign, not bad, not bad at all.
The escorts still aren't strong enough (stock sensors, etc.) but it was an enjoyable campaign. One of the main reasons I set it up is because I wanted larger convoys and that's easier to do with an 8k environment pc resources-wise. Though I had no complaints of any kind with the 8k. I increased the convoy size including escorts by 50%.
Problem was for some reason the convoy column spacing reverted to the default 500m, which I don't like, even though I had it set for larger. Strange.
In the end, it was no better but certainly no worse in any way than any other campaign I've done, gameplay-wise, "realism", etc.
Yes, stock SH3 wasn’t bad at all of what i remember back in the years.
Win 10 does really weird things sometimes... IE i set all my torp load before patrol and i end up with other load! :o Happens at least twice to me.
Other thing lately, in my last career patrol my tonnage was 27000 and in bunker log book nothing appears...tonnage zero! No medals, no experience, nada!
Win 10 is the best crap builded over last years.

Well, stock Sh3 doesn't resemble a u-boat sim by any measure.
Another one of the reasons I did this campaign was to see how valid I thought some of the complaints about the stock sensors, etc. were. I.e., escorts track you no matter what, depth charges to powerful, etc. Sometimes things are the way they are for gameplay reasons, "historical" or not, which is fine with me, and making them "realistic" via historical specs, etc. can actually cause problems.
I didn't have any of the above problems (escorts tracking, depth charge strength, etc.).

Thanks for the responses!
After reading through and thinking, I decided to go with:
SH3
GWX
Magui
I really like the look of the Magui interface and GWX makes it an entirely different game, so I guess I'm calling it my GWX-Magui vanilla game ..:haha::haha:

Haven't done a campaign in vanilla but anytime I've had to scrap and start over I run a couple test missions in stock game. You know, I always think to myself "this aint bad".
In fact it might be worth just setting up with H.sie patch and new U-boat comp.

Honestly, I cannot STAND a vanilla game career, etc. This is why like the minute I get a new game, I always look for mods for the game. I usually play the vanilla game campaign for a little while first, but not always if I know how much the campaign sucks.

How do you know "how much it sucks" if you don't play it ? :03:

Haha lol.
This is usually a game that has come out a while before and I'm reading the reviews. Reviews matter IMHO. It is the public feedback on how good a product is. If the reviews say that "Ships when torpedoed randomly fly into the sky" cough cough...Silent Hunter 5 Then chances are I will not download it unless something else convinces me otherwise.
But if the reviews say that, "The escorts feel real, and not like cheating jerks cough cough.... Silent Hunter 3 Then chances are I will buy it unless something else convinces me otherwise.

<shrug> I prefer to form my own opinions vs. having someone else do it for me. :D

Point taken. I can see why you would prefer that. If we all followed Trumps advice, the world would've ended in 2016, not now.
Anyways, this young man has gotta go to bed. I'm cranky in the mornings if I don't sleep at all.

I played SH5s vanilla campaign for a while, making it to 1941 before I decided to mod it.
I also did play all of the SHs vanilla campaigns, not anything earlier than SH3 though. Then I got sick of the vanilla campaigns and decided to mod them.

Stock sh3 have several issues that need to be fixed by mods.
I don't like many aspect of stock game, a huge Sea folder is needed to force you to make real tactics to found course and speed, like stand longer and check to pair course or 4 bearing.
H.sie fixes are needed, it's irrational that developer doesn't fores correct that heavy bugs

Just ran my first patrol in at least 5 years 100% vanilla. 6 sunk, 26k tonnage. I forgot what a PIA crew fatigue is. I'm trying to organize an attack and 1/2 the crew are napping in quarters. The watch officer never reports to the bridge unless I drag his butt up there.

You have to use H.sie's mod to get the watch officer off his arse. :)
I only ever played sh3 in stock or vanilla version.
There are a few bugs I've uncovered over the last 7 years but I have figured out how to deal with or ignore them.
I have had no complaints about how the escorts behavior is simulated, as I have faced all sorts of enemies and situations, from rank amateurs to the highly skilled and determined.
I'm just not savvy enough to go for all the mega mods and upgrades, and am happy enough to have a program that launches and runs when I want it to.
So far, I have fixed the torpedo loadout bug, by selecting each torpedo in turn, choosing the type it already is, and then double clicking on the type I want. Load the mission, press I and see that it worked.
Like I said, 7 years on, found some minor bugs, but not enough to bring the game to a grinding halt.

I love the vanilla version. It works!! The original is a masterpiece if you ask me. In March of 1942 now.

Thats how I consistentily play it -- stock SH3 and currently mid 42 bound for NA.
Usually start with a 7b Flot II transfer to Flot 1 when I can, stay with a 7C until fall '41 then upgrade to 9C in time for Drumbeat, then back to 7C mid '43 until I cheat a bit and modify the config txt file to give me enough renown to buy a XXI, which I finish with.
