View Full Version : SH5 crash to desktop
Hello all. I just bought SH5 on steam. I tried to launch and got the ubi update issue. I replaced the SH5 application with the DVD application per instructions. The ubi update no longer stops the game from starting but now it crashes to the desktop as soon as I start a new campaign. It gets to the loading screen and never finishes loading, the window just closes and back to the desktop.
Any help would be appreciated.
Eventually I am trying to mod to TWoS but I want to make sure I can run the stock game first.
Thanks in advance.

Install TWoS on top of what you have done, don't bother with the stock game, it would need heavy modding to work properly anyway.

And to add to what I said above: Because you have started a new campaign with the stock game, delete the savegame folder SH5 before installing TWoS, otherwise you will run into problems.
What you can do once you have installed the stock game is: Start game, verify that it reads '1.2.0' on the buttom right, then set grafic settings. Quit game WITHOUT starting a campaign or any mission.
Then install TWoS.
Thanks for the info XenonSurf. I installed TWOS but am unable to start a career. I get to the bunker (looking at the sub in the under cover dock) but no main game interface displays in the window. No speed gage, depth gage, etc. If I elect to try a mission, then the interface(s) show. ? With TWOS installed can I only play the missions?

You need to carefully read the WoS documentation, you cannot skip that without going into trouble. Also there are onscreen infos in the menu that you must follow.
In your case when starting a campaign in WoS you must save game immediately after going in the bunker, then quit to main menu and reload. This is written onscreen, if you don't care about then you run into the problems you mention.
WoS is very stable as long as you do what's in the docs.
Read the docs, the onscreen messages and later in your campaign: read the BDU order messages !!
Also a word of warning: Don't ALT-TAB out of the game...save the game, go to main menu then ALT-TAB if you want to change to desktop, then reload from main menu.
If you play the single missions, set your gameplay options in the main menu. For your career, set your options in the bunker for the campaign, the main menu options don't apply for the campaign.

Wait, are you sure that the mod did work when you installed it? There would be no intro and there would be a splash screen for TWoS.
If you already said that it worked, my bad.

As to if the mod worked, the game started with splash screen for TWoS. Once in the bunker looking at the sub externally, the main game interface (as referenced on page 13 of the game manual) did not display. NO speed gauge, depth gauge, time compression, crew abilities, etc. No menus to select so I was unable to leave the bunker, enter the sub, get underway, etc.
I am not able to get the regular (un moded) game to start in career mode, so I cannot determine if it would show the game interface.
Thanks for you input.

Ach So.
Thank you for what should seem so obvious but did not appear in the game manual.
I reinstalled and patched the game and have gotten it working. Searching the manual again leads me to believe that I will have to learn the game mechanics by trial and error but at least my boat is underway and I can click on things to find how they work.
Thank you again.
