View Full Version : Returning to SH5 from Wolfpack after a long long AFK, looking for suggestions

Hello fellow Subbers

I used to play SH5 a lot years ago, but stopped as I moved on to other games. Recently a bunch of friends of mine started to play Wolfpack, which so far has been excellent, and I thought it would be a great time to return to SH5.

Playing on Uplay w/ a very high end system, what would you folks recommend for fixes, mods etc?

I'm familiar with how a TDC works from WP, however I'm not really looking for a hardcore playthrough. Effort to get the kills, sure, but I also appreciate a good minimap.

What mods and/or fixes would people recommend? Are we still using JSGME? I've seen a generic patcher mentioned also.

Thanks in advance!

TWoS may be too hardcore for you, but there are means to play it in a simplified way, although the AI and sub damage is still at very high difficulty.

At some stage I will release my 'Stockgame Plus' release for SH5, everyone will be able to install it, u-play, steam etc...But currently I'm busy in SH4 and it will not be for tomorrow I guess.

Meanwhile, I suggest you install TWoS, have SH5 version 1.2.0 installed, better outside of steam and outside of Program Files (x86) folder, then apply the U-play fix, then install WoS.

Have fun!

Much appreciated on the speedy reply! I did look into TWoS as I still had the shortcut for it on my desktop yesterday lol, but never got around to playing it I guess.

Is there a watchlist for your mod? I'd love to get notified of it when it's active.

Thanks! :Kaleun_Salute:

Yes, a full description at the link below. It's on my computer already, but I need to add instructions for the installation etc.
There will be a simplified improved Stockgame modlist, plus a more elaborated release based on TWoS but less difficult to play.

That's .. A lot of mods. I hope the link makes them easy to manage. For now I'll follow your advice and play about with TWoS and see if I can tweak it to something a little easier.

Good luck on the release!

TWoS is the only way to go

No, it's not, not for the occasional gamer, the learning curve is too high, it's very nicely done but WoS has been modded to death IMO, it doesn't come with different difficulty levels to satisfy everyone.

So I gave TWoS a go, and unsurprisingly I didn't hit a single torp on very slow tankers :c

My main problem i think is accurately IDing a target, I check the sheets, but none of them seem to match up. I don't have this problem with Wolfpack because you can filter by mast code, engine location, superstructure type, islands, etc.

I did try to enable the "auto detection" minimod but it didn't seem to do anything, probably me not using it right.

I feel that the problem with a heavily modded game, especially to a greenhorn like me, is that it's really not that accessible, even disregarding the technical knowledge required to get the Uplay bypass, then the mods, etc.

Unfortunately for me, the tutorials in the script executer don't work, they rely on game mechanics that are disabled (ie auto-detection using the weapons officer)

I just purged my DL, and I'm re-installing. I'll have a look through some basic fixes and light mods, and give the game another go. I'll report back if I manage to sink anything.

Gotta starve my own country by any means necessary! lol :Kaleun_Salute:

Jaiden Yo juego en modo fácil con TWOS y sin nigún problema. Hay que instalarlo bien y activar determinadas funciones. Si necesitas ayuda dimelo.

I play in easy mode with TWOS and without any problem. You have to install it well and activate certain functions.

Did you use manual provided (hit 'E' to bring it up; theres many other useful tools there too btw), There are many filters in it, so i guess you were using something else?

Auto detection should work.
Hit 'space' button while hovering the target and XO will follow it around and then hit 'X' to lock it down if you want. Then to identify target use gunner officer (3rd one from the left) -->'Torpedo attack' --> 'Identify target'

I would say forego the recognition manual all together. See posts 146 through 150 at the link below. Simply matching course and speed on the surface can get you great results if you take the time. Plus you know you’ll be using historical methods. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

I've followed all the instructions and tutorials and this didn't work for some reason. The E menu brought up some sheets which were interesting, but ultimately didn't help me much.

I just finished a dry run of the stock game, no mods. The only realism options I had disabled were map spotting and 1 other I forget the name of

Had a lot of fun! The stock game has a ID filter similar to Wolfpack where you can filter by stack type, superstructure, shape of the nose, etc. I found it very easy to ID targets using this.

I shot all but 2 torpedoes, only 2 misses. Unfortunately for me I didn't decide to salvo, so even though I got several good hits and disabled several merchant ships, they didn't sink. I managed to evade the escorts and use the deck gun to finish off 1 ship, then I had to go to work. Was fun.

I'll look into modding the game tonight.

There must be manual in there, probably draggable button is hidden somewhere on the edge of your screen (its left side for me) and you didnt notice ;)
(it does have the filters you described)

and you get this by dragging it out ;)

Okay, looking good!

So I realised I did something stupid the last time I installed TWoS, I installed the full mod, then the update, which I now realise isn't needed, as the full mod comes fully updated anyway, whoops.

Found the ID book that was mentioned, very good! Love the 45 and 0 angle pictures, definitely helps with IDing targets.

Did some practice on historical missions, my torps were on target but seemed to miss anyway? I was thinking I may have set the depth too deep, but double checking that definitely disproved that idea, I usually keep about 0.5m above the bottom of the ship to ensure a low but good hit.

I read somewhere that torps can deflect off the bottom of a ship and not explode when on impact mode, is that true? Magnetic detonation is also not reliable either right?

The auto ID works now, but I'm going to use it as a "last resort" measure in case something bugs out (prime example being the ID book refusing to open when i have it set to tankers)

Does TWoS work reliably in multiplayer?

Thanks everyone for getting me back in the hot seat :) :Kaleun_Salute:

When in doubt, use external camera (F2), it can speed up the learning process :)
If a torp is dud, you get information about it in the message box, as well as about premature explosions.

I also reinstalled SH5 recently. TWOS is the way to go. Easy to instal and has a good mix of the best mods.
