RCMP officer among 17 confirmed dead in Nova Scotia killing spree.

RCMP say 17 people are dead, including one of their officers, after a man who at one point wore a police uniform and drove a mock-up cruiser went on a rampage across northern Nova Scotia in one of the deadliest killing sprees in Canadian history.

Police said Sunday night the suspected shooter, 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, was killed after being intercepted by officers in Enfield, N.S.

Const. Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year member of the force and mother of two, was identified as the officer killed. A male officer suffered non-life threatening injuries.

We are in shock here in Eastern Canada. This is way to close to home for my family. The killer was going down the 102 to Halifax where my son, his wife and our two grandchildren live. My daughter's partner is a 30 year veteran in the RCMP. They lost one of their own, Const. Heidi Stevenson and that is always a tough situation.

RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki told CBC News Sunday evening the death toll stood at 16, plus the shooter, which surpasses the 14 victims killed in the 1989 Polytechnique massacre in Montreal.

I understand how a man can be triggered into doing something insane like this, but what I find hard to understand is the premeditated part in this horrible decision to murder as many as he could. :o

It is always jarring when something like this happens in Canada since they have been spared much of the scale of the senseless violence that occurs here in the Lower Forty-Eight; deepest sympathies to the victim's families and loved ones and more so to the family of the slain RCMP constable...

Very sorry to hear this.
I wonder if it will ever come out what drove this man to commit such senseless murder :nope:

I am very sorry to hear of this senseless shooting and the horrific loss of life. I'm glad your family is safe Marcel but I'm at a loss like everyone else to understand this senseless rampage. :Kaleun_Mad:

Update.

The death toll has now climbed to 19.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/mass-killings-shooting-community-reaction-1.5538181

RCMP confirmed Monday that at least 19 people are dead after a lone gunman's rampage, leaving families and communities across Nova Scotia devastated.

Chief Supt. Chris Leather said at a news briefing Monday afternoon that some but not all of the victims were known to the gunman.

Leather said officers are currently at 16 crime scenes spread across Portapique, N.S., and other nearby communities.

He said there were five structure fires and so far they have been unable to fully examine these crime scenes, as most of them are residences and there may be victims still within the remains of those homes which burned to the ground.

More than five structures and cars were burnt in the course of the shooting, including homes in Portapique and Wentworth that were reduced to rubble, as firefighters were unable to tend to them while the shooting continued.

Police said some victims were uncovered in the remains of some of those fires.
