Really like this option. Have had to abort several patrols because of it, which is as it should be as many patrols were aborted for mechanical reasons.

Usually engine problems.

Just ask the reigning hangar queen, the U-505...
The early type IX U 43 also had a lot of trouble leaving the dockyard.
The first models of type VII, U27-U36 had to have their engines overhauled after their first few patrols because it was discovered that the current designs were not robust enough for continuous high speed running, which is essential in attempting to overtake or even shadow a convoy...

Yes, in reading Blair's books I was surprised by the many aborted patrols.

Let's face it, the uboat was an obsolete piece of equipment, even freshly off the assembly line.
When the Germans went to sea in 1939, the uboat of the day was not much more technically advanced than the ones they ended the last one with. Better, more solid construction, welded rather than riveted, improved battery power, but in every other case, just the same as before.
Yes, the engine systems had been improved, but they still broke down worryingly often.
This was the problem the type XXI had to deal with.
Poorly designed and made of substandard material
The superchargers couldn't be used, cutting its horsepower in half.
Other than bad quality workmanship, some of the kinds of sabotage the Germans had to deal with included sand in the lubricating oil tanks and lines, clogged fuel pumps caused by paint coming off the inside of the tanks, dead dogs or animals placed in the drinking water tank to make the crew sick and unable to fight, electrical failures of the radio and coding equipment, sending ships back to base, because if you can't send or receive orders, then what good can you do? Limpet mines placed on the outer hull, out of sight of the crew, so that when they do the trim dive, the bomb goes off and the ship is never seen again. Similarly to jam the main diesel induction valve to the open position, flooding the boat with tons of unexpected water.
Yeah, I'm okay to play the game without all these handicaps.
I mean, we lost anyway...
