It's hard to believe it's been five years since the last time I tried this, but with '100 Years' finally out of the way it's time once again to try Silent Hunter III.

I have several games I'm trying as well - Wings Over Flanders' Fields, Train Simulator, Microsoft Flight Simulator Ten (or FSX, as it's commonly called), and Lockheed-Martin's flight sim Prepar3d. People call that one by a lot of different names, but the manual says it's pronounced "Prepared".

So, I'll be tracking my progress with re-installing SH3 the way I like it. I'll be referring to my old thread as a guide to how I did it before. This time maybe I'll finish one career before I get distracted by something else. I'll be doing all this on a new desktop computer I bought a couple of years ago and have upgraded a couple of times since then.

That's a good one. It took me a minute to figure it out though. But you're right. I've been bitten far to many times.

i too am just getting back into SH3, after what must be close to 10 years!

at the moment DCS (flying the Harrier) has been my main 'milsim' obsession, but ready to get back into the water!

Where the heck do I get the game now? I remember in the past I got it from a site I can't remember. Heard bad things about the Steam version.

Thanks all!

I got my copy on line from Ubisoft's website store. Paid 10$ for it. Single best purchase I never regretted.

thanks!

I am trying to remember the name of the store i got my last digital copy from. it eludes me. it was nice because it was free and clear of any DRM from Steam or Ubisoft. I imagine they are out of business now.

what's the best mod to use now? I used GWX back in the day.

edit: found it. gamersgate was the site and it's still there. downloading now. :)

My copy is from the twin-pack (SH2 + SH3) I bought from a store spin-rack in 2006. I almost never touch download games, though that is slowly changing.

Sorry, multi-player is something I never do. As soon as I heard about Wolfpack I knew it wasn't for me. I've looked at some videos and they only reaffirmed my conviction on that.

That’s fair. Depends on whom you play with. Plenty of idiots in the main Wolfpack Discord but there is a core of players who are very into the role playing aspect and take it seriously. Think historical SOPs, German commands, etc. I had my share of doubts in that regard too, believe me, but I was smitten. I was a crewman on an armored vehicle in the Marines and the small crew dynamic, working efficiently, training etc really brought back good memories.

Not for me. I've tried all sorts of role-playing games and hated them all. That's the last thing I want to do on my computer, even with all good, friendly players.

Does it work ok with mods like GWX, and can it be run directly from Steam?

I have SHIII on Steam but should also have a CDrom somewhere in the cupboard under the stairs but really don't want to have to go in there lookin for it if I can avoid it.

Steam version works perfect with every mod, i never had any issues with it, i have some five different sh3 installs .
After you install a supermod and patch the executable you dont need Steam open to run the game .

I'm the same way. With DCS, everyone is always telling me I should be playing multiplayer. Have no interest in that, would rather just do my own thing.

Looking forward to getting back into the Atlantic. :arrgh!:

After a little work I got SHIII installed. From the disc. At first it wouldn't install, and I couldn't figure out why I was having so much trouble when It worked fine the last time. Then I realized that the "gift" computer I had it on was running Windows 8. Here I was telling everybody it worked fine for me on Windows 10, and the reality was that I've never tried to install it on Win10.

I ended up installing to the much-hated X86 folder on the C Drive. That worked fine, and then I moved the whole thing to the folder I store all my games on. So far, so good.

Sorry for the huge delay, but I've had other games also grabbing my interest - Wings Over Flanders Fields and especially, believe it or not, Train Simulator. I'm at a point no where SH3 is begging me to research mods again, and I'm starting to warm up.

Well, I spent a lot of time working on other games with problems. Then I got back to SH3 and Commander kept telling me that I already have SH3 running and I can't load Commander. After stripping out SH3 once again everything seems to be running alright.

You too??? WOFF is AWESOME! I've flown it quite a bit, although not recently. Also in my absence, I've taken up model railroading. AT&SF between 1936-1946. I've got the big train sim, (Trainz 2019) but haven't messed with it much at all.

Am coming back up to speed here myself. (but try not to worry.... :D although my post count is 6,666 currently.:haha:)

Sorry, didn't mean to derail anything. I just thought the coincidence was remarkable.:ping:

Sailor Steve
03-19-20, 04:33 AM
I became upset with WOFF because one player/modder developed the ring of forts that surrounded Verdun. I couldn't get them to show up in the game, and I kept badgering the chief modders until I embarrassed myself. When I apologized they all said that they should be thanking me because if not for me they never would have been aware of the problem. Now it looks like the head designers are redoing that part of the game so the forts all show up automatically...just for me!

As for trains, I've become hooked on Dovetail's Train Simulator. I love driving the real engines along the real routes, especially some of the oddball little routes like the Corris Railway with its miniature engines. One of my favorites is the Welshman/Scotsman who goes by 'SmokeBox' and his 1870s engines that you can drive using the techniques they really used.

Oh, and you didn't derail anything at all. It's my thread.

Well, the inevitable happened - I screwed up and lost the whole thing. I found I had a folder set aside labeled something like 'Complete finished 'Data' folder'. The last time I had it set up exactly the way I wanted I copied everything in the 'Data' folder, thinking that I would just have to install the mods and the .ini and the the other files would be ready to go. I loaded it up and got through the entire entro, except for the way it looks. It loaded for awhile, then crashed. It might be something as simple as one mod I forgot to install, or as complex as being completely twisted around. Or maybe it's because the last version was done on Windows 8 and I'm using Win10 now. It doesn't matter. The only thing now is to tear it out one more time and start yet again from scratch.

If so, "there's your problem!". If you need to make personal tweaks to files, create your own mod-folder structure in MODS. It is so easy to undo mods and re-arrange in another order. Also, it can also change files in the SH3-root folder, not just /Data

The majority of mods relate to what is in the Data folder, but not all. Some files could be in the root folder (community executable patches). Or the savegames/user configuration settings in the Documents/SH3 folder may out of sync with your 'Complete finished Data folder'. As you must know, that can cause crashes as well.

If you like single player sci-fi stuff, the MASS EFFECT series, especially the first three... I'm in love with those games. Its like being the main character in a movie. Very heavy epic stuff. You can feel it as you play. Very well written and interlinked storyline (until the very last, and they've got a mod for that, fixing it.)

Just don't forget that you live here at Subsim, Sailor Steve. Its like mold. It grows on you and permeates. You can't scrub it off. :D

Just something to consider... I, for 1, use a computer running Win 10 & this is what I did to set up SH3 to it:

When I went to install SH3, I avoided C:/Program Files & C:/Program Files (X86) completely & set up a folder as follows:

C:/Games/SH3/(whatever mod I decided to use here, for me, I used /LSH3-2015, since I went with it...)

Hope this helps you out...

Well that's pretty messed up. I've been treated fairly in the Wings Over Flanders Fields forums. Except for two or three from my Red Baron 3D days, they don't know me from Adam over there. They are at least polite though. Other than there, I don't have any experience with other sim sites, but some have seemed so massive and full of children, that I didn't even try.

Hi Steve,

Not sure if you remember me from the old SH2 days, I see you use FSX, I too went on flight sim, got in to AI and doing repaints.
I'll be honest I'm a rubbish pilot, I should practice more lol, I un-installed my FSX and went back to FS2004 and installed some better scenery and I'm happy with it.

As for Windows 10, I was on Windows 7 and had no problems running sims then I upgraded to 10, I could have rolled back but I missed the roll back date so was stuck with 10.
Cut the story short I formatted my hard drive and re-installed Windows 7 again and all is back to normal.

I left SH for a long time but recently got back in to it, I have all the versions on disk and installed SH3, SH4 and SH5. I can't get SH5 to run it is asking for updates but the Ubisoft server is down so no big deal yet I still have 3 and 4 to play with.

I tried Train sim and I liked it but my problem was slowing down in time for stations and lights, I used to overshoot or slow down too soon then have to start again and often got it wrong.
I looked to buy one of those controllers but they are too expensive, I thought by now some company would have come up with more alternatives, I tried using my FS joystick but couldn't get it to marry up.

Anyway sorry for the long post but it is always good to chat to one of my old friends.

Col.

That's funny. I have a copy of FS2004 (or FS 9 as some call it), but I figured I had to have FSX (or FS 10 as it is properly known). I'm doing fine with FSX and Steam, so no complaints. I've also been trying out Prepar3d v3. Just experimenting so far.

I've been quite happy with the recent updates to Windows 10. I used to think of going back but I have no such desire these days.

I've never been a train guy, but I'm really getting a kick out of Train Sim. I especially like the Old West trains by Smokebox and the equivalent 1880s Caledonian locos. Lots of fun, for me anyway.

Hi again Steve,

I forgot to mention I also have XPlane11 as well, that is good, especially the models, they are very detailed, the default scenery is OK too, I did get some local scenery that was fairly real.
Problem I had with it was, I got used to tweaking FS and XPlanes is a lot different, I couldn't get my head round doing any tweaks lol.

Anyway back to SH, I just did a long mission on SH4, sank a good few but I couldn't surface, I think the whole of the Japanese air force was up there.
I eventually crept away and made it back to Midway.

I remember the guy calling me Colonel too, I got that on the flight sim forum as well lol.
