The German tactic of getting inside the convoy proper, surfaced, at night, allowed the U-waffe tremendous success.

Sadly, the game does not really allow this, the main reasons in my opinion being that the convoy columns are too close together and the spotting routines of the merchantmen and even the escorts are too powerful in comparison to real life.

Convoy column distance is easy to change if you want. In the Campaign_RND.mis file, just do a search for "convoy" and you'll see how to do it.

I have had some early war convoy battles of epic proportions. I personally have never found anything wrong with the convoy disposition and detection abilities.
My favorite are the ones that are unguarded and unarmed. The only thing you need be aware of is danger from collision damage.
One example I found in grid AM29 en route to the British isles. Probably expecting an escort to meet it, but I got there first. No air cover, no warships, no guns. We wiped out everything with the Union Jack. Only 6 Americans left, all unharmed by us.
Although ones of the Yankees left a bit of paint transfer down the port side...(I was already in the middle of a turn, but had to lay on right full rudder to barely avoid an 8000 tonner bearing down).
