Shipmates-

I'm kind of curious of what other skippers are using in regards to keep the game authentic.
My current settings:
- Limited batteries, compressed air, oxygen, fuel.
- Realistic damage, repair time, ship sink time & reload times.
- Manual targeting and no assistance from the weapons officer.
- Using noise meter.
- No un-stabilized view (realistic sensors unchecked)
- No dud torpedo's.
I am using contact updates, enhanced sensors (realistic unchecked).

I used the default settings for awhile and I found the sim getting boring.

So where are you at? :salute:

Currently running at 52% realism after moving to manual targeting. All the consumables are limited and I have realistic reloads and sensors, but realistic repair time didn't get checked on the last patrol somehow. I keep the maps updates, external and event cams on, dud torpedoes off, and have a stabilized view.

While I admire the hardcore S-boat drivers who play as authentically as possible, I don't yet seek to emulate them; I'm still having fun at this level. I have a 1945 Balao/Tench with full sensors, deck guns, and Mk 16s in 1941. The invasions, whlle still unstoppable, are much bloodier affairs now.

Always 80%, just external camera on for screen shots, and maps contact on.
The last one is just laziness because i don’t really need it...

Map contacts only. Essential for late-war U-Boat careers and not unreasonable for Fleet Boats in the Pacific. Everything else is checked and no event camera or external views allowed - ever. Usually works out to 88% difficulty depending upon the Mod.

I've often wondered that the term 'realism' is a exchangeable with 'micromanagement'!

I would say that it's a colossal red herring and that when any gamer claims "realism", it is only because in the computer game context, the word doesn't actually mean what they think it means.

Map contacts on, external camera on. Everything else off.

External camera: I like to see the pretty explosions and such.
Map contacts: Otherwise, I'll lose track of the picture.

Here is what I play my campaigns at:

My next one will be with no map contact updates, as I've been wanting to give that a whirl.
I've never play with dud torpedoes, i have enough frustration at work, LOL.

Everything checked except No map contact update and No stabilize view.

100% No map contacts, external cameras, nothin.

I play in real time too. I literally let it run for 13 days while going from Honolulu, to Midway, to the Japanese coast.

I have no good answer as to why.

I usually just leave Map Contacts on. Need to pretend my crew actually do something. Rest is at the most realistic setting possible. (Within the game.)

I already got my hands full calculating my torpedo solutions. I can let the other guy do the other part.

You guys are an inspiration!:Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:
Someday, I'll plumb the depths of realism in SH4. For now, realism isn't even on my BPS-12 radar, because I loaded the Skipjack mod, got a few Mk45 nuclear torpedoes on board, and I'm having great fun trying to outrun the 11kt rooster tail. One convoy, one torpedo.
My dad was a plank owner on Snook 592, so I guess it's a bit of a trip down memory lane for me....Cheers!:Kaleun_Cheers:

Limited fuel, etc.
Map contacts on.
Auto targeting. I hate doing the manual.
Duds on.
Stabilize view. No stabilize gives me a headache.
Realistic repair.

Mine is set at 74% - automated targeting, with no event camera but the external camera is on, as is map updating. I figure "what the hell is my crew for?" Let them do the calculating, and let me watch the results. I'm in it for the fun.

To each his/her own.

Hi All.
Regarding realism, I am playing with FOTRS,but for some reason the settings keep reverting back to auto targeting. I have started a new campaign and set realism up to 90%, but it still goes back to `duffer` mode. Any thoughts?

Are you setting options from the main menu, or from the "radio" link in the office for career start?

Using single campaign mode, I've had to reset options every time.

From main menu. Tbh, I haven`t sailed back to port to reset yet. Still on first mission, so I could abort, wipe saved, and start again.

In some ways, it is very frustrating the way they did the Options for gameplay in SH4, but then again, it does allow some variety...

The Single Missions, Single Patrols and Multi-player scenarios all run off of the Main menu's "Options" menu choice. Easily accessible each time you start, so long as you remember to do it...

The Career choices are available once in the Captain's Office, either before you start a patrol, or between patrols, by clicking on the radio console:

This at first seems silly, but you can't have the options changing on a Save game file if you think about it, which would happen if they were only on the Main Menu. Also, you can have an 'easy' career, a 'normal' career, and a 'realistic' career all going at the same time under different skipper's names, and each can have their own gameplay settings different from the others. That is kind of nice. Again though, it comes down to remembering to do that for each career start. Once set though for each individual career you make, they stay set that way, until the next time in the Captain's Office, where you can change them again, if desired. :salute:
