This looks promising - A flexible WW2 Pacific carrier battle sim - the developers seem to be a very enthusiastic group who are dedicated to realism.
The graphics look splendid

Whatching Developments with a keen interest looks like a very polished
Taskforce 1942 from Micropose in 1992 the game that made me buy a PC
Ho how I miss crossing the T or sending in a carrier strike.

note to oneself might use this as a excuse to get a new gaming rig next year!

Hello everybody!
Thank you UglyMowgli (the First Team :Kaleun_Salute: )& Squashman for your generous help propagating our name and our dreams.
Big thanks to Neal of course, for his usual kindness. The man's warmth would make you feel at home even aboard a cramped Type II submarine patrolling the North Sea on Christmas Eve. :Kaleun_Wink:

If some of you have questions, please don't hesitate, shoot (the questions, not the developer, at least not just yet). We're heading for a vertical playable slice (that's the fancy name for a beta these days) before the end of the year, and we will happy to provide the community with as much visibility as we can. It's in our interest that you get to know more about our plans, and it is in your interest that we make sure to deliver something that will not disappoint. Feedback of any kind is, and will always be welcome. We are old naval/sub/air combat simulation hands ourselves, so don't worry - we're not here to make a mockery of the genre, quite the opposite actually.

:subsim:

Take care everyone!

So, first, Happy New Year 2020!

Let start. Weapon free, fire at will :

- Release in 2021 ?
- Only US side or also Japanese or even more nationalities (UK, ....)?
- Campaign, scenarii and quick battle?
- From just 1941 to 1945?
- Submarines? (this is Subsim)

Thank you :salute:

Amiral Crapaud

Ah! Well.

let me start with two things
- First, the main pre-alpha video which actually wasn't posted in the topic. It introduces a certain number of technical characteristics for the game and the engine both. I advise anyone to have a look at it first, it might already start to give you a more precise idea of what the game is about what it can do.

https://youtu.be/upbqBpcG3EA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upbqBpcG3EA)

- Besides, I will admit that the contents aren't not the easiest to navigate, but our website actually contains a lot of info regarding what Task Force Admiral is - and to a certain extent, what was asked has been answered over there already. If you people have some time on your hands, please make sure to check it & read, among other things, the FAQ section :)

https://drydockdreams.games/
https://drydockdreams.games/about-the-game/frequently-asked-questions/

Now, about the questions proper :Kaleun_Wink:
- Release in 2021 ?
Yeah, that's for sure, can't go beyond that! We have a life, some of us have a job, but more importantly, we can't have this development go on forever. The whole point of keeping the focus tight was to make it happen in a plausible time in order to progress to the next stage with a solid product in our hands.

- Only US side or also Japanese or even more nationalities (UK, ....)?
Only US for now - reasons for this are detailed in the FAQ (see below). It is a step by step process of all the contents (units, game modes, etc...). Some of the work needed for the next stage is always brewing in the previous one - naturally, in the case of the IJN, we will have the ships made already, and we will be able to focus on the specifics of recreating its specifics. Same with the RN in the volume after the next one.

Q: Why only single-player, and why the US Side only?

TL/DR A: For multiplayer and the Japanese side, unfortunately you might want to wait for Volume 2 if we want Task Force Admiral Volume 1 to happen at all.

A: Developing a game is a heartbreaking process like no other. As you might see somewhere else on this very website, we are a very small team, and outside of our Lead Dev’s personal experience this is our first game. We want to make it right and proper, and we forced ourselves into humility when it came to set our objectives.

This is the heartbreaking part. We had to make choices, and none of them will prove popular, but this is the price to pay to ensure that we will eventually deliver a game, and hopefully a good game at that. As a first step, single player was the obvious way to go, as a first technical step most appealing to the larger part of the audience. Multiplayer will come in a future release (hopefully as early as Volume 2) and we are already laying the key ground work needed for the tech. Indeed, we plan to provide Volume 1 with a full replay function and a save-game system, which besides their obvious added value are also a first step in the direction of an actual multiplayer module.

Besides, we decided to stick to the US Navy first for this attempt after much thought given to the fruits of our research and the quality of our production value. Works such as Kaigun or Shattered Sword have thoroughly demonstrated that Japanese and American naval tradition and carrier procedures differ dramatically, and we couldn’t just ignore this and go generic – it is not in the spirit of our game. We do plan on recording hundreds of voice lines for our game, each and every scenario will be researched in depth, and we made sure that your own forces would follow actual US procedures and doctrine whenever possible. In short, considering our small team and other constraints, we could guarantee a good level of presentation and authenticity for the USN, but we would simply fall short of our aims if we were to promise the same for the Imperial Japanese Navy at this point. This game is designed along the lines of a love letter to American carriers – as romantic as we French are, it certainly would not feel right to write the same love letter to two different individuals at the same time, would it? ^^

We are not the kind who enjoy making fake promises. We hope that, in time, you will understand the purpose of these hard choices we had to make in this starting phase, and that in doing so, the quality of your gaming experience was the one and only matter we had in mind.
- Campaign, scenarii and quick battle?
Please allow me to quote our FAQ once more if it's ok:

Q: Why is there no campaign mode planned?

A: We have plans for a campaign system for Volume 2, but right now we wish to focus on the core mechanics of the game, and get the historical scenarios right. Eventually this will be our tribute to the genre and to the men and women who served, which has to come first. Same story again: working on too many different game modes would just guarantee that we don’t get any of them right. We will have to stick to our roadmap for now, but rest assured that we are fully aware of the untouched potential in regard to our tech and the theater itself.
Around 30 scenarios (conservative estimate) will be available at release. They will consist roughly of 1/3 historical, 1/3 variant & 1/3 hypothetical.

- From just 1941 to 1945?
Actually only from Dec 1941 (Wake) to February 1943 (Operation Ke). There again, it's a matter of staying focused. We will expand from there later on.

- Submarines? (this is Subsim)
As targets (and as a threat), yes certainly. Japanese submarines sank 2 CVs and damaged Saratoga twice at that time, we cannot make a CV task force command and not take them into account. US Submarines might be around, but they will be outside your command scope - as they should.

As you can see below, torpedoes will get the same detailed treatment as any other combat ordinance in our game.

https://youtu.be/kyN1GRDSQ4s

Hope these few details will quench your thirst for now :)
Have a great weekend everyone!

Maneuver board, you say?
Oh yeah, that is the nice looking disk on the right of your chart table. Here, check.
As the flag officer in charge, you naturally get to decide which formation your ships will adopt, and how you will place them. Formations are completely customizable. Once you have chosen a basic formation by the book, can let your staff handle it, or simply pick a ship in the screen and move it to the station you desire. Yes, it's that easy already.
If you know where the attack will be coming from, you might want to concentrate your forces on the right flank - but if you were to create a AA or ASW hole inadvertently, you might have to assume the consequences!
This interface will also be used for force reorganization and when assigning individual tasks (for rescue duty or when refueling, for instance). Ships involved in specific operations, such as plane guard or seaplane recovery will do their stuff on their own and rejoin formation once the job is done.
A variation of this screen will also be used to organize CAP missions and inner perimeter patrols. It is still a work in progress prototype - so as usual, please be nice .

Now there's that one ship, you might have heard of her.

She went down exactly 75 years & a few hours ago.

Even though people knew her as a ferocious monster or a very expensive floating resort, one can say that although it failed to deliver the Imperial Japanese Navy with a decisive weapon, High Command still nailed the marketing - after all, she delivered us with a very acceptable anime series & fanboys are still drooling over her 18 inchers decades afterwards.

Ladies & gentlemen, I introduce you to Lady Yamato, in her 1945 garment (but don't worry, the proper 1942 outfit - and her sister Musashi's own configuration - will be available soon too)!
Of course, useful to war effort like a dead brick worth 70.000 tons of steel, but hey. Judging by her popularity, awesomeness is a currency better suited to our days of peace, I'd say!

No worry mate - the list on the website was conservative, hasn't been updated since it went online. Since then we've added other rather specific SWPAC planes such as the A-24 or the Beau (that might have a role if we make a couple hypothetical scenarios on the Gili Gili/Milne Bay ops)

To stoke up the interest in the subject matter among naval enthusiasts and to engage all who want more actively participate in research to learn about it, would you consider letting some of the historical digging to be done by the community? Sure there a many questions about all of the true and authentic details of this past WW2 era and serious and really deep research inevitably takes precious time.

So why not share some of the questions and some of the research subjects on this forum and see if community can help to bring you some answers. :Kaleun_Binocular:

Hello there

Well, we do that already - we received much help from our community on our social media accounts (Twitter & Facebook in particular) and elsewhere (Drachinifel kindly opened a channel on his discord to help us get in touch with his community). The shipbucket crowd has provided us with quite a few rivet counters overtime. We have regular exchanges with Bismarck from Military Aviation History, or the curator of Armoured Carrier. In a word, so far we get our needs well-covered, worry not :)

We will release our steam page this week, and it will also involve a discord server dedicated to these matters. Our research advisors will be working with us on their own dedicated sub channels, but if we or they were to be in need of external help, we will gladly use that tool to make it happen :)

Cheers!

I think that is because Drachinifel (the channel owner) doesn't want to clutter his discord too much. But I agree it would make sense to split that as there can be kind of confusion as both games are not directly related.

Our own channels will go live soon.

When I got in touch with Drachinifel, he kindly proposed to create a channel specifically for TFA.
Knowing that I might not have enough traction all by myself and considering that we had been helping each other for months, I asked if I could extend the invitation to the Sea Power team - which he agreed on too. It is not to be our official discord, just an interface to interact with his community. As such instead of having two channels half-dead I'd rather have something more alive and kicking by sharing the love

Just like the Sea Power team though, we're currently preparing our own official discord channel. That's another reason why it's better to stay together and not spread ourselves thin each on our side at Drach's.

Cheers!

So i'm a little confused......are individual units playable like a simulator. Like Taskforce 1942 and 1942 Pacific Air War?

Anyway...it looks great and it's been a dream of mine to have an upgraded version of both those games with obviously better graphics and gameplay. :Kaleun_Applaud:

From a damage stand point...are you modeling the "wet deck" worst case scenario of getting caught arming and refueling and being attacked at the same time? For BOTH sides? Nagumo takes a lot of flak for his decision making and how that left the carrier strike force vulnerable at the (in hindsight of course) most inopportune time. His luck ran out.....luck created by overconfidence in the element of surprise and ignoring critical intel which gave clues that US might know that they were coming... (Miracle at Midway is my #1 book on the subject).

Hi there!

Thank you for the kind words.

No, we're making a realtime wargame the likes of Carriers at War or Pacific Air War Carrier Battles module. It is not excluded that at some point we'll tackle the platform simulation level, but it's not for vol.1
After all that is said and done, we're still a small team at the end of the day. Gotta make sure we make it happen properly before we think about expanding it further, right? :Kaleun_Wink:

Well
Nagumo's decisions were not so much based on over-confidence than actual events hampering the proper executions of the orders - and random events allowing the events to flow like they did.

Had the Chikuma scout found TF-16 like it should have had it flown properly its course, Nagumo would have received a spotting report before he got to re-order a second strike on Midway. It just snowballed from there. But as long as objective #2 (neutralize Midway as a base) is the first objective because objective #1 (sink any enemy carrier) is disabled by the absence of any sighting report, you can't blame him - and you can't blame the AI - for acting on what is then actual knowledge.

Miracle at Midway is a nice narrative but it is unfortunately largely weakened as a reference by the digging that has been made since then (especially by the iconic Shattered Sword you probably have heard about). Sorry if I am to disappoint you on this, but I sincerely recommend to read Lundstrom Black Shoe Carrier Admiral as a good example of what result we're trying to achieve. And yes, "wet decks" are part of the whole affair, otherwise where's the challenge :03:

Which kind of Japanese subs will be in the game? (If there are any)

Pt-Boats?

S-Boats?

Oh we will simulate them of course. They're very important party poopers for US carriers all along 1942. Expect a few major types to feature, especially these of any type involved in failed or successful attacks on US carriers during that time.

PT Boats are planned too, and so are S-Boats (and by that we mean S class US subs, of course).

Cheers

Hi there!

Well
Nagumo's decisions were not so much based on over-confidence than actual events hampering the proper executions of the orders - and random events allowing the events to flow like they did.

Thanks for the reply. I was getting the Overconfidence angle from a couple things. Nagumo's decision to turn towards the American units and close the distance directly took away a tactical range advantage his aircraft had over the Americans. A turn back North east would have bought critical time in a moment when the pre battle assumptions were just turned on their head. My other point was that the Japanese could have sent twice as many scouts out earlier to cover their flanks and avoid the whole disaster. If you are holding back half your force in reserve to strike enemy carriers anyway....you might as well use some of those assets for a pre dawn launch recon. Meaning they get to the end of their patrol bearing at first light.

I'll have to check those other books. Thank you so much for making this game.

Amiral Crapaud
05-22-20, 10:48 AM
haha you're welcome!
Just don't hate me if we don't implement double-phased search patterns for the Japanese side on day 1 - honestly, Shattered Sword sort of debuked that myth too. Expecting the IJN to implement something that wasn't even a thing in the doctrine is a bit cruel. But we'll get there soon enough :)

Anyway - if anybody wants to know more about the game, Magz just did a small piece on us. Very nice content, if you ask me!

As noted, "Battle of Midway" and many other books that came out postwar were based on incomplete or erroneous Japanese sources. The myth that IJN carriers had their decks loaded with attack planes and were about to launch a strike when the SBDs showed up is just that, a myth. "Shattered Sword" is a must read for anyone interested in WW2 carrier warfare. That said, the USN was lucky, the SBDs showed up at the perfect time, but then "luck" has made the difference in many battles...

Glad to see the Devs have done their research, the more I read up on this game, the more I look forward to it.

You guys appear to be making one of my dream games and resurrecting my favorite company!

The thing that most excited me is that your team seems to understand that limited information and that "historical" games that give me modern blue force tracking and a tightly integrated common operational picture ...well...aren't "historical" in a very important way. I applaud the game design philosophy on your website wholeheartedly!

Already at the top of my Steam wishlist...this is an instant buy for me just because you're TRYING to do it!

Hello there chaps!

We haven't been idle over the last few weeks, posting smaller updates left and right. A bigger one is incoming, but in the meantime here is some relevant contents from recent updates, including some bits of animated gameplay options for a change.

We're prototyping our menu & our soundtrack, care to tell us if you feel like the mood is adequate considering the topic? The footage is kinda old so no worries this will be changed and made more relevant, but it was picked based on the sort of feeling we wanted to convey more than anything. Hope it does the trick :)

https://youtu.be/rjzUMy2J8zk

And some extra 3D models posted during our March updates too:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ew7KrrqVgAAhlW8.png

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ExfccWJUUAQg40A.png

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ExfdWo-UUAID8W4.png

As of late we've been posting a lot of 3D stuff, but it doesn't mean we've been inactive under the hood - quite the opposite actually. Although from the standpoint of aesthetics most remains to be done (it's somewhat there, just not cute enough to be showed according to our artists...), we have been very busy with the gameplay functions themselves.

One of the important features of Task Force Admiral are notably our advanced formation system, which will recognize two main types of formations - simple formations, and compound formations - which will be customizable and manageable to an extent that hasn't been done before in any game about the topic. This GIF from the formation editor within the mission editor proper gives you an idea of how easy and intuitive it is to move your ships around in a larger, multi-division task group. This destroyer division is being formed into a line formation, a bent line formation, a loose/customized formation, an arc formation, an echelon right and an echelon left formation using a few clicks.

This is not only necessary from a tactical standpoint, it is also the best way to ensure that we will be able to recreate meticulously historical task groups by placing ships where they ought to be when the information is available. The in-game configuration screen uses the same system, with an actual grid placed on your navigation table instead of a paper maneuvering board. Paired with the fleet defense interface that allows you to customize threat arcs and defensive air operations (Combat Air Patrols & Inner Patrols, mainly), the common interface allows you to remain familiar with the tools you use in both modes in order to achieve maximum efficiency.

Hope the wall of text didn't scare you! Feel free to comment, just bear in mind that it is very bare-bone. Don't worry, it gets only prettier from here ;)

Looks absolutely fantastic, been on my radar for a while now and really looking forward to the game’s release. It’s great to see you are paying a great deal of attention in particular to unit pathfinding and collision avoidance which have always been problematic in naval sims. I see lots of inspiration here from the original Microprose titles TF1942 & 1942 PAW which is a great thing as they were two of my most favourite games back in the day.

I would also like to say that I see you on many of the naval gaming forums and discord channels that I frequent, promoting & discussing not only TFA but many of the other naval sims that are currently in development such as Sea Power and Destroyer - the U Boat hunter, it is great to see that you are ‘non partisan’ , that combined with, your personal commitment , risks you have taken and care and attention you are executing to bring TFA to life speak very highly of you and your love of the genre. I hope the game is a massive success for you and the resurrected Microprose on its eventual release.

It is obvious that TFA is a masterpiece game in the making!

Grand, complex, realistic, and also very beautiful. Truly proud ambassador and guardian of Microprose's tradition of quality, and fun. The way we remember and love so much.

TF-1942 & 1942 PAW left us gamers in awe, and I am confident that TFA will do the same and so much more.

Go TFA Team!

From the Steam Store page I read: “Take Command” and under the game’s Features: “Experience naval command from an innovative first-person perspective. Choose to ride the flow of battle through the eyes of an actual flag officer buttoned up in a flag plot, blinded by our advanced fog of war system; or play in a more relaxed manner with a traditional God's eye view served by a flexible camera system” :yeah:

This is really an Intriguing design concept for me. I’m very interested to learn more about the “innovative first-person perspective” .

Wow even better views! I really enjoy these first-person deck POV . I think it delivers a real feeling of immersion and being part of the action. Hopefully playing as the task force admiral we can get out away from the Plots and up onto the observation deck to get a feel for the action. Halsey certainly did.

Another idea is radio. I’m thinking of the “Radio Commander” example here. I’ve been impressed with this game's simple but effective concept. In this game you never actually see the action, you hear it over the radio. It “paints” a pic of the action in the player’s mind. Imagine if you could hear the TF air squadrons as they make contact and enter action. This did happen in RL naval battles and was even shared with the entire crew in some cases.:salute:

Radio commander is the experience we're going for if you pick the maximum level of realism. As for the rest, yeah, I have a long history of naval games, and that TF-42/Destroyer Command feel of having the wind blowing on your face was just too good not to be reenacted :Kaleun_Wink:

Yesterday, we posted a few shots after tweaking the in-game Fovy (Field of view y-axis) & well, it sure delivers. Put simply, play around that setting and every shot becomes a keeper. What a few degrees of different bring to the sexiness of it all is outrageous.

Like everything else, camera-wise, it is entirely toggable on the fly using / and * on your numpad so that you can take your shot in-game (and in the replay mode, when there will be a replay mode). Hope you'll approve of the lines of the ladies below:Kaleun_Wink:

Well, I for one can't wait! This is a high-priority acquisition for me, on a short list of titles that are of great interest. Anything not on the short list is only a maybe.

This, on the other hand, has evolved into a definite purchase.

Really nice modeling of the Aichi floatplane ( color? ). Loved the catapult launch effects. I remember the AIchi type were the first aircraft launched to reach Pearl on the early morning of Dec 7 1941 and radio back to the fleet: “Enemy fleet in port." Seems spooky and sad now. I thought the TF radar and callouts sequences were impressive also.

Thanks!

The E13 is sporting its default colour, her early 1942 scheme wasn't done yet (it should be amber grey, like a Zero). But then again the composition of the forces, the time, the refit of Lexington, the tactical organization of the Japanese force, etc... All of this is made of what we had under the hand, final scenarios in the game will have the proper skins & names for everything :)

Cheers & thanks for your kind words!

Great to see that the Kickstarter is doing so well, will be amazing if we can get all the stretch goals in.

I’ve been trying out the demo and it’s been great, fantastic level detail, very beautiful and reasonable performance even on my lowly laptop.

Big salute to Amiral & his DDG crew, definitely worth the wait.
