So I found out the hard way, don't try to verify the integrity of the game files with Steam with a mod enabled. Seems pretty obvious, I know.

I'm not sure exactly what happened, but doing so must've made some Frankenstein combination of mod and vanilla files that totally locked up my computer. It was either that, or the resulting hard restart that corrupted Windows, and caused me to have to dump the whole thing and do a fresh reinstall of the OS.

Fortunately, Windows was only crippled instead of completely corrupted, so after a few tries I could get it to boot up and then back everything up to USB drives.

Super annoying, but could've been worse. So yeah, don't do what I did!:doh:

It is a button difficult to resist at times... "Verify Integrity"... sounds good, but yeah, it will mess things up in a modded game. What I did with my Steam install, was I made a copy of my game directory, and pasted it into a new folder, and that is the copy that I mod. I leave the original install alone (you can verify it without worry). You can add the "new" game executable to the Steam start menu (which of course has that "Verify file integrity" button on it), and rename it something appropriate. I also use MultiSH4 v1.5 and create a new save folder for the modded version. :salute:

Good idea. I'm just glad it was only software that got messed up. My first concern was that the hard drive was damaged. Either way, all is well once again. Or as well as one can be whilst patrolling the pacific in an obsolete S-18.
