View Full Version : AOD like escort bearing lines

Wish something similar was in SH3 to make up for the lousy sonar man not being able to pick up an escort right next to the sub, regardless of direction.
Happens at least once a patrol; some escort charges me and between the almost inaudible prop noise of it in the game, and the lousy sonar man, one ends up on top of me at point blank range, all the while while the idiot sonar man tracks one far away.
Only been sunk once from it, but it's very unrealistic to have an escort (or a merchant too for that matter, same thing happens sometimes) not picked up by the sonar as it charges from far away to on top of the sub, or not to have some game artifice to simulate the job ala AOD.

Aren't there bearing lines in vanilla? I'm using LSH3 since forever and I modded pretty much all help away /switched them off, but I'm fairly sure I remember bearing lines in one of my first games.

Not sure, didn't spend much time with vanilla. There are bearing lines via the hydrophone possible, but they're not as helpful/don't have the same characteristics as compared to the AOD ones.

Ah that's possible. I've never played AOD, so I wouldn't know. I think in vanilla you have bearing lines in the chart view.

If you can disregard the graphics, give AOD (not CAOD) a try. About the only thing SH3 has on it is graphics and manual targeting.
Just got done with a patrol where an Allied plane called in a destroyer to go after me.

Only one example of what I mean. Take the SH3 U-505 mission. I'll have one escort nearby doing circles around me, never mentioned by the sonar man, no bearing line on the map, it doesn't even exist according to him. Choosing "follow nearest warship" command of course.
Meanwhile, he's tracking some escort far, far away that is no threat.
In AOD you'd be informed of that nearby threat in a similar scenario, as you would be in reality.

Yes, I'm very unhappy with the sonar man's performance myself. They hear threats only from very close or not at all. You constantly have to check the sonar station yourself to be safe in SH3.

Yeah, not realistic either but it's still a great game.
