That's a pretty vague request.

What sort of degree are you going for?
Are you in a traditional school, night school, online?

Thanks for the replies

Basically I’m doing a distance learning course for logistics and transport I already am qualified in transport management but this is a separate and more advanced degree

What I’m looking for is how to plan time and also how to set out essays mainly I know o have to write up 300 and 10000 word essays so word management as well.

That’s what I’m looking for is the planning and how people set out their work plan the work and also how they set out their essays

Well you are not going to like this advice and you probably won't follow it. I sure didn't and I have my doctorate. :D I wished I had followed this advice that so many well meaning people gave me. But I am not that type of person. To me, the only way is the hard way.

The key to academic writing is really dependent on using an outline. Academic writing is a formula. It is completely different from creative writing. Using outlines is not fun, and at first you may think it is a waste of time. But it truly isn't. Most paragraphs in your document will have the exact same structure such as:

- Transition from previous paragraph

- One and only one "point" that you are demonstrating. Trying to do too much in one paragraph is a common mistake.

- The information that supports the "point" of the paragraph

- An application of how this "point" is related to your overall hypothesis

- Transition to the next paragraph

The other common mistake is to start writing complete sentences. In academic writing, I found that writing complete sentences was one of the last things I ended up doing in my papers.

Take each part of this formula and for each individual paragraph, just write a word or two. Just enough for you to document your thought process. Do this for most of the paragraphs. Make sure that your flow through the paragraphs amply supports your hypothesis. This is the skeleton of your paper.

Then, once you are happy with the flow, go back and turn these words into more detailed phrases. Don't worry about grammar. You are just expanding on what you wrote. Do this for all the paragraphs. Now your skeleton has muscles and is starting to take form that is recognizable.

Once everything looks complete, then and only then do you take these phrases and turn them into grammatically correct full sentences.

You don't polish a piece of furniture while you are building it. The same applies to academic writing.

One of my many problems in academic writing was that I tended to start at page 1 and then continue through the document. Not. A. Good. Idea.

I found that once I understood academic writing that I wrote my papers from the middle out. The first and last paragraph/section/chapter were usually the last things that I wrote.

Way different from creative writing that I was more used to.

Key points of academic writing

- Rubric -- A document that tells how the faculty will be making your life miserable.

-- Learn it
-- Live it
-- Love it

- Style guide. Many schools require academic writing to follow a style. For my doctorate it was the APA. Your school may have a different one. Follow it. Beware that often schools, like mine, used a standard style.... but modified it. Yikes, that's not a standard then. Accept it and find out if there are any modifications that your school uses in regards to writing style manuals.

- You are not writing a mystery story. There should not be any big surprises.

- Follow the old military adage of

--- Tell them what you are going to tell them
--- Tell them
--- Tell them what you just told them.

- You are making an academic argument (you will learn about those). How you make this argument can be more important than the argument itself. coughcoughmystupiddissertationcoughcough

- Know the difference between a reader that is ignorant as opposed to stupid. In academic writing you are assuming that your reader is smart but ignorant about your topic. Assume nothing, explain everything.

- You will know when you are successful in academic writing when someone reads your paper and remarks "Well, duh, that just makes sense".

- Win the war. The overall goal of your studies is to get the hell out of that school, with your degree and never think of them again. Keep that in mind. Don't fight the school and don't fight the faculty.

Cooperate and graduate.

Take great pleasure that after you graduate they will still be stuck there. :D

By the way, according the United Nations International Committee on Making Student's Lives Miserable (UNICMSLM)

It is a matter of international law that anyone reviewing your paper MUST, under penalty of death, make changes. Just accept this.

Also accept that many of these changes will be stupid. It sucks.

There is a huge difference between a writer and an author.

A writer writes stuff where an author incorporates stupid changes made by other people. Academia prepares you to be an author.

Goal: Get your paper approved and get a good grade. Nothing else matters especially such things as facts and things.

I like to think of it as dogs walking past a tree. Everyone just has to leave their mark. They are not contributing anything, but just making sure that everyone knows they exist. It can get frustrating, but it is part of academia.

After a few papers, if you break the code on the formula, you will be able to knock out primo academic BS in your sleep. :yeah:

Legendary advice Platapus, if I may say so Sir. I'm currently undergoing a thing called a 'Tertiary Preparation Program', which will get me entry into the film degree I want to get into. It's all about how to write and structure essays in the proper academic way etc. Everything you say is 100%. The assessment rubric is God for the academic student wanting to survive the trench warfare of tertiary education, or whatever you call it over there. Keeping your head down, complying and remembering what you're fighting for is what it's all about. Tough gig, for anyone with half a brain.

Friends don't let friends get PhDs. :nope:

It's too late for me. Save yourself. Better off getting multiple master's degrees that complement each other.

I'm 3/5 of the way through my Mining Engineering degree.

I haven't written anything.

I took literature, political science, etc. Never wrote a thing. If you become an engineer I guess they just assume you don't need to write, haha.

From a fellow student to another, good luck in all your studies!

Welcome to Sunsim , Kanadar. :sunny: I hope you enjoy your time here. Good luck in your studies as well.

@Kapitan: Platapus gave really good advice and sound insight. I can only add that different disciplines require different approaches. For example, in the medical field, it's helpful to take what I call the " onion approach. " In the medical profession you have to study as if peeling an onion-many different layers. As an example, the Endocrine and Nervous system are so closely tied together, it's truly hard to separate them. I'm sure other disciplines are similar in their respective approaches.

On the other hand, considering the excellent narratives and stories on your visits to various ships and subs and visits to Chernobyl that you have posted here in Subsim, I think you have little to nothing to worry about regarding your studies. Your writing is detail oriented and your enthusiasm and passion for learning and all things nautical come through loud and clear. :yep:

:Kaleun_Wink:I have no doubt you will do well in your endeavors, Blair. Trust your instincts, intelligence and abilities and I'm sure you will do just fine. To that I will add good luck and all the best.

... I've heard a lot of information from my classmates about going to the website papersowl.com (https://papersowl.com/pay-for-research-paper) and paying for a research paper. I don't know how I feel about it, because I understand that if I don't have time to do everything in time, I will have to go to them, but on the other hand, I want to write my own research paper. What's your advice, friends?

Don't buy papers and don't plagiarize.

The advent of the Internets Tubes has made it easy to plagiarize or buy papers... it also makes it easy to find out who is doing it. If you can find a site to buy a paper, your school probably already knows about it. The schools also use plagiarize detection software/sites where they can have your writing scanned.

The Frau used to be an adjunct professor at a small university. One of her students turned in a "suspicious" paper. It took her about 30 minutes to find the website where the student purchased the paper.

A large part about earning a degree has to do with integrity.

Please allow me to share my favorite quote about integrity.

If you have integrity, nothing else matters
If you don't have integrity, nothing else matters

I can honestly say this has been one interesting year, I'm now nearing the end of the degree I have only assignments and exams to do then I'm done, I have smashed the degree in a little over 14 months my final pieces wont be done until august 2021 so 2 years world of work by then completed.

I have learnt a lot about myself in this last 14 months the biggest thing for me is confidence boosting in writing.

I can say that I did follow Platapus advice and I have read through my tasks and assignments and noticed the change in my style of writing which is most certainly for the better.

Platapus i know you said friends don't let friends get PHD's well next step for me is masters and I'm really toying with a MBA or the IoSCM Level 7 masters equivalent in supply chain transport and logistics.
After which I would almost certainly like to entertain a PHD study.

On another note thanks for your advice and help it really has helped

On a more serious note

Why are you wanting to get a PhD?

This is a very important question. Only you can answer this.

There are some industries where getting a PhD is important. I would opine that most industries are not like this.

PhDs are expensive, both financially and emotionally. You need to make sure that for your chosen industry that there is a significant pay-off for your investment.

My opinion? For many industries, getting multiple Master's Degrees that complement themselves may be better.

The issue with going down the BS-MS-PhD path is that you are limiting yourself to one path. Sure, at the end, you will be recognized as being a knowledgeable one trick pony... maybe.

Now, if your plan is to get into academics..

DO NOT GET INTO ACADEMICS!!

Then getting a PhD is almost a requirement. But for normal human jobs, it may not be.

If your industry is in the IT related industry, current certifications will be more marketable than having a PhD. I have interviewed quite a few CS/IT PhDs for positions and what we look for is current education.

I remember interviewing this applicant back in the early 2000's. He had a PhD from a very prestigious university in Computer Science....from 1968. :o

I am not a computer guy, but I suspect that computer science has changed a little since 1968. He probably has done some wonderful things in the CS industry since then. The issue was that he had no documented continuing education since then. Sure, he had a PhD from a school I could never get in, but when hiring CS/IT we need currency too.

Compare this with another applicant with a MS in CS and his latest certification was a few months ago. Not a tough hiring choice to make.

So the key is to choose your academic path carefully. Don't just assume that the best path is the BS-MS-PhD path. :nope:

Also take in to account your age. How much longer are you going to work in your industry. I received my doctorate when I was in my 50's!

Retrospectively, this was not a wise decision. Factoring in the expense of getting a PhD compared to how much longer I will be working does not make for a favorable equation.

If your industry does not require a PhD, the only reason you should get one is self-actualization

It is doubtful that you will ever earn enough money to compensate for getting a PhD.

You are not going to garner the respect of others if you get a PhD
- People who don't have degrees will criticize you for being an "egghead intellectual" who can't be trusted. Don't kid yourself, there is a prejudice against higher education in the US.

- People with Master's degrees will criticize you for wasting your time getting a PhD (primo flore botrus)

- People with PhDs will criticize you for not getting the "right" PhD or for not attending the "right" school.

You can never win. So don't expect to.

I don't mean to denigrate PhD programs, but I feel that it is very important for anyone considering it, to carefully consider it. I am happy I got my PhD (Self-actualization), but rationally, I waited too long to get one. I did not get my BS until I was 28. I did not get my MS until I was in my mid 30's.

The story may change for those students who can knock down all their degrees by the time they are 25. So take that into account.

I would recommend seeking out senior people in your industry and ask them how they feel about hiring PhDs. When I got my PhD, there was no pay raise, no promotion, almost no recognition. My job did not change at all. That makes justifying all the expense and time a little hard.

My PhD may have helped me get my new job, but in talks with the people on my board, they told me that my having a PhD helped, but was no where close to the deciding factor.

If your industry has such hiring/promotion boards talk to them. Find out from them what they think is important.

Good luck with your decision. PhDs are expensive and emotionally scaring. It is not a path to go down casually.

I can highly recommend reading PhdComics.com We laugh because it is funny. We cry because it is true.

DO NOT GET INTO ACADEMICS!!

Right, took me six years to find out.

Kapitan

Thanks Platapus i will answer the questions as they come.

Why are you wanting to get a PhD?

I want to prove to myself that I am capable of doing it.

There are some industries where getting a PhD is important. I would opine that most industries are not like this.

There are very few in my industry that have PHD's and yes quite correct its not really needed although some major companies do ask for PHD level education.

PhDs are expensive, both financially and emotionally. You need to make sure that for your chosen industry that there is a significant pay-off for your investment.

In reality the industry that I am in has already paid for a PHD and then some, money isn't really much of an issue for me I'm quite lucky in that respect.

My opinion? For many industries, getting multiple Master's Degrees that complement themselves may be better.

This is something I would actually look into and right now there is two masters I am looking at one being Masters in Business Administration the other a Level 7 Diploma in my industry (Masters equivalent)

The issue with going down the BS-MS-PhD path is that you are limiting yourself to one path. Sure, at the end, you will be recognized as being a knowledgeable one trick pony... maybe.

The Industry I am in is extremely broad I see the point your making and i am that one trick pony right now I guess.

Now, if your plan is to get into academics..

DO NOT GET INTO ACADEMICS!!

No intention to get into academics.

If your industry is in the IT related industry, current certifications will be more marketable than having a PhD. I have interviewed quite a few CS/IT PhDs for positions and what we look for is current education.

I work in the Logistics, Supply chain and Transport industry.

So the key is to choose your academic path carefully. Don't just assume that the best path is the BS-MS-PhD path

I do want to do a PHD for me it is the personal challenge however i am always open to the options and discussions, I am one of these people who will procrastinate on something for months and then make a decision on the next course of actions, this is basically what I'm doing here is gathering opinions and also sizing up what i can do next and what my options are going forward.

Also take in to account your age. How much longer are you going to work in your industry. I received my doctorate when I was in my 50's!

Well I've got 17 years in the industry in total in various roles from grass roots to senior management, I have taken many qualifications in my industry that all complement each other in one way or another, and right now I'm nearing 33 years old.

If your industry does not require a PhD, the only reason you should get one is self-actualization

This is the exact reason I wish to do it.

You are not going to garner the respect of others if you get a PhD
- People who don't have degrees will criticize you for being an "egghead intellectual" who can't be trusted. Don't kid yourself, there is a prejudice against higher education in the US.

I'm not after any respect, I am a rough and tumble guy that says it very bluntly and how it is, I also have a thick skin and don't intimidate easily, so that side of things doesn't bother me.

I am a British Citizen born in the UK but I Live in Canada at the moment.

If your industry has such hiring/promotion boards talk to them. Find out from them what they think is important.

I am wondering what you mean here? there are a few places that offer jobs to study PHD if that's what your meaning but I'm not sure

Thanks for the tidbits Platapus hope I have answered the questions as you have mine, there will be more no doubt as I still have yet to make my mind up.

Sounds like you have thought this through.

Unfortunately, it also sounds like you have been seduced to the Dark Side. Forever will it dominate your destiny. :D

Getting a PhD because you just wanna get one is probably the best reason.

Best of luck with your decision. It will be a long and arduous path, but one that you can be proud of completing.

My comment about the promotion/hiring boards was geared at you finding out what these boards are truly looking for when they make their promotion or hiring decisions. Not every industry has such boards, yours may not.

The point was that if you are considering getting a PhD to get promoted, first find out if getting a PhD will actually help you get promoted. The same with wanting to get a PhD to get hired to another position.

You don't want to go through the trauma of getting a PhD only to find that it will have a minimal influence on your future plans.

Serious advice: If you know of any PhDs in your industry, seek them out and talk to them. Not all PhDs are bitter cynical buttheads like I am.

Each industry is different as are PhD programs. You don't want to get "a" PhD, you want to get "the" PhD that will help you the most.

Sounds like you have thought this through.

I have thought it through but the key thing is I am still thinking it through, the real problem I have is that I take months and months to make a decision because I weigh up everything before parting with money.

Getting a PhD because you just wanna get one is probably the best reason.

Best of luck with your decision. It will be a long and arduous path, but one that you can be proud of completing.

Yes id agree this is for me as a person to prove to myself, I am very willing to take a long path and to be honest I should have done this about 6-8 years ago not only that I should have also paid more attention at school and not left when I was 15.

Thanks for wishing me luck I am still a little way to go before I make a final decision yet as I still have about 3 options to whittle down.

My comment about the promotion/hiring boards was geared at you finding out what these boards are truly looking for when they make their promotion or hiring decisions. Not every industry has such boards, yours may not.

I don't think my industry has these boards and to be honest very few universities offer courses in logistics and supply chain, it is a specialist subject I guess but one that affects every person on earth.

The point was that if you are considering getting a PhD to get promoted, first find out if getting a PhD will actually help you get promoted. The same with wanting to get a PhD to get hired to another position.

To be honest most jobs in my field don't require a PHD in fact many don't even require more than a level 3 qualification, however there have been some jobs posted lately specifically in the shipping industry asking for PHD level education.

Serious advice: If you know of any PhDs in your industry, seek them out and talk to them
This is noted, and this is something I have to say I am finding hard because there's not many about its like hens teeth, I have tracked down one guy who is a professor at the University of British Columbia and have asked him his advice so that's a positive but I would like to speak to more for sure.

Each industry is different as are PhD programs. You don't want to get "a" PhD, you want to get "the" PhD that will help you the most.

Indeed this is why I am taking my sweet time making the decision and figuring out which one will help the most, I have to say I probably will be deliberating this for a fair while yet.

Thanks for the advice Platapus it really has been the most helpful I have come across to date I really do appreciate you sharing this with me and I appreciate you taking the time to help me.
