View Full Version : Saving in combat - how dangerous in SH5
I'd like to have a go at playing a campaign, but at the moment my time for playing games doesn't allow for several hour long sessions and I need to be able to save and exit pretty much any time. Thing is, in a game like this a battle can take hours with no means to quickly disengage. In SH3, saving while in combat was said to cause all kinds of bugs up to irreversibly corrupting a save file - how is it in SH5?
TWoS documentation says to avoid saving with damaged/destroyed/bugged units around, but nothing about simply having (undamaged) enemy units around - am I to understand it should be safe?

In sh5, saving with units around is OK in 99% of cases, for example in ports or in front of unaware convoy...

I am currently chasing a convoy and saved several times with no problem.
Thanks guys! That means I can hope to play a campaign in SH5 before retiring in RL :)
I have been lucky with saves - until this morning. Saved after sinking destroyer and moving away fast north of Malta. Dived away from scene and saw a dozen destroyers heading towards me.
Received orders to relocate to Athens so thought go there and headed East. Kept CTD and had to go back a couple of saves and still kept CTD.
Read forum and deleted the Special file mentioned. Reloaded last save. All ok and made port but it was stressful for awhile.
I shall take care now when saving.

If I'm not mistaken, it's also important to note that the reliability of the autosaves is not as good as the manual saves... so basically, the autosave will probably almost always work, but really you should never rely on it. Manual saves have never left me high and dry, with a variety of saving situations.
