View Full Version : The same thing throughout the campaign?

Hi, I need your help again!

I started the campaign at the beginning of the war, I made 20 patrols in two years and already the game has become predictable.
I installed some mods but the problem remains.

Practically, get out of the harbor, during the day sail in immersion, surface at night, go to the patrol area for 24 hours and in 99% of situations you encounter a single merchant... end the torpedoes or fuel and you return at home. During this time you manage the crew. I met a convoy three times but I have not met a carrier, a battleship.
I passed through the English Channel once and it was something new.

The war lasts for three and a half years, and I still have about 30 more patrols to do, but if I do the same thing, how can I not get bored?

Maybe the idea of a dynamic campaign through which you do the same is not the best choice!? What do you think?

think the megamods have solved this problem for years now, making SH3 the unsurpassed version of longevity for general approval.

As far as I know Il-2 Sturmovik has even greater longevity; but this matters less.
From what I read, LSH3 and WAC require a better PC than mine. NGYM and CCoM, I have not studied them but GWX is workin on my laptop and looks ver good!

But is there a general opinion on this forum about what I said?

This is called Campaing. And you can go through any of them. Atlantic, Mediterranean, Black, Baltic Sea and Indian Ocean. I met not only single vessels, but also aircraft-carrying shock groups. Sink them all!

You don't need MODS to be successful at sinking ships, you have to navigate the proper convoy and single merchant ship routes; there's a pull down map on the navigation chart screen. There are frequent map updates during patrols indicating contacts as well; intercept the contacts and send them to the bottom. There are a few training videos to help you in the forum. The Newbee guide in this forum is full of information and will make you a successfull Kaleun in no time. Enjoy.

First of all, these are Poul for GWX campaigns. Red Baltic, Mediterranean, 30th Flotilla, 10th Flotilla in France forever. And USAM from Wreford Braun (WB). And etc. For example https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2619526&postcount=1

That was the Uboat life. Lots of boredom and sudden moments of excitement!

The convoys and the battlegroups are out there. It's up to you to find them. If it were easy, every real-life Kaleun would have been an ace. Prien knew where to look, and became a legend. So did Kretchmer. Read the accounts of real sub commanders - especially first-person accounts - and try to emulate their hunting techniques. SH3, certainly with NYGM, is good enough that real-world tactics work.

1. If you're not using SH3 Commander, you should. There is an option in it for realistic career length vs the unrealistic entire war career length.

2. Until 1942 or so regardless of the mod used, the game is very easy to rack up tonnage. Ahistorically easy imo, at least in terms of danger to one's sub.
While the modders did great work with what they had via game limitations, the escort AI in SH3 isn't very good. Use realistic tactics/mindset, and you're practically untouchable.
From 1942 or so, they get a little better for various reasons, but never as tough as AOD escorts if you're familiar with that game.

Thanks for the link, I will use it after finishing the classic campaign. Once I started it, I want to finish it. It is difficult to choose a supermod: CCoM, GWX, LSH3, NYGM, WAC when you don't now to much about them. Perhaps an article strong points and weak points of each supermod or a presentation of supermods can be an ideea?!
LSH and WAC are to much for my laptop, CCoM do not have an englush manual. GWX and NYGM, easy way.

I think you are right, but either they have to do a more detailed manual or they should have a more elaborate campaign!

I wouldn't play the game without it.

I would recommend two mods. Submarine tracking room by LGN1 and Mid patrol orders by Wreford-Brown. First will send planes and hunter killer groups after you if stay in one location and keep scoring tonnage. Latter will give you new patrol grid at request every time you save/load. Conditions permiting.

These two in conjunction with several others keep me coming back. Waiting för autnum...

Couple of questions:

1. Are the hunter-killer groups based on the historical dates, or do they appear the entire war ?

2. Is the new patrol grid function any different than the one in Stiebler's patch ?

I think they appear during entre war. More and more as war makes progression. Idea of the mod is to react to your actions.

Couple of questions:

2. Is the new patrol grid function any different than the one in Stiebler's patch ? Very. All you have to do is sink one ship and send a contact report. BdU will answer and send you to a diffirent grid or orders to stay put. Save/load and it randomly selects a new one.

Thanks. Nice thing with Stiebler's version, don't have to sink a ship first or do the SH3 save/load/fingers crossed dance.

Because GWX runs with difficulty on my laptop, the only solution for me are mods.
The idea is good because it energizes the action. What are the other mods that make you come back?

With Submarine tracking room it's a necessity. 14 saves during a patrol

After 24 patrols, I took a longer break but I can't play anymore. I tried but ... after 108 hours and + 700000t sunk I will wait for the new laptop to play SH3 + GWX. Missions are a work of art full of history.
