View Full Version : A laugh from something Roger Ebert said

I was searching for tropes about stuff being "the size of Texas" which seems to be a standard unit of measure. I came across this quote about the asteroid in the film Armageddon:
Roger Ebert:
"OK, say you do succeed in blowing up an asteroid the size of Texas. What if a piece the size of Dallas is left? Wouldn't that be big enough to destroy life on Earth? What about a piece the size of Austin? Let's face it: Even an object the size of that big Wal-Mart outside Abilene would pretty much clean us out, if you count the parking lot."
:har: That was awesome.

I used to work with someone who was, for some strange reason, very proud that he lived in Texas. We had another co-worker who lived in Alaska.
Whenever the Texan got a little too much Texasy about Texas, the Alaskan would causally say
"Perhaps they should cut Alaska in half and make Texas the third biggest state?"

The one saying I remember during my visit to Texas was by a Texan (I forget who precisely) when told Alaska was bigger than Texas he replied "Not if you melt the ice"

How big would Texas be if all the Bull [Manure] was removed?

Many years ago I visited the famous Arizona Meteor Crater, which is just under 3/4 of a mile in diameter. At the time we were told the meteor itself was about the same size as a railroad boxcar.
As for Texas, when I was in Navy Radio 'A' School we had a bragging Texan in our barracks. I heard two good responses:
"Texas - where men are men and sheep are scared to death."
"If BS were white, Texas would be the ski capital of the world."
And I was born in Dallas, so I have to include myself in those insults.
I was wondering which state is the biggest, so I made a search

Way back when Alaska was admitted into the union as an official state, much was made about ow the new state eclipsed Texas as the big dog; comedian Red Skelton told a joke at the time about the matter:
Alaskan: Well, how does it feel for you Texans no longer being the biggest state?
Texan (not impressed): Y'all wait til the ice melts...

:Kaleun_Goofy: What a memory you have
The website 'The True Size Of (https://thetruesize.com/#?borders=1~!MTQ1MjAxODM.MTEyMDYxODM*MTI0NzQ2OTg(N DExMTkwNQ~!US-AK*NDQwMzI5Nw.MjgxMTU4OTQ)MA~!US-TX*NjU0ODgy.MTgyOTM4MzM(MTEy)MQ~!US-CA*MTkyNjU3NQ.MjQyMjE2MjA(MzM2)Mg)' will let you compare the relative sizes of countries and states. Just type the name of the country/state in the box in the upper left and hit "Enter". You can select multiple countries/states and move them around by clicking and dragging. You can also rotate them using the compass in the lower left.
It's a very interesting site which demonstrates how much the Mercator projection skews our view of the world.

Don't worry, Neal. He's just envious because your "State" is more than twice the size of his whole "Country".
Hmmm... :hmmm:
I detect the possible hand of Texas at work here:

Yes! We're on the way to #1! Crank up those refineries, boys!
(This thread wasn't intended to be about Texas but about how Ebert pointed out that the move plot had them exploding an asteroid but world could be smoked by an asteroid the size of a Wal-mart.)

(But it so much more fun to have a few laughs at Texas' expense...:D )...
