View Full Version : Hsie torpedo failure option

I know that with this patch option, multiplying .4 x the wind speed substantially decreases the chance of a failure/deep runner.
However, that obviously seems very ahistorical/gamey to do. "I say, Navigator old boy, be a good chap and give me a weather report so I can set the torpedo depth correctly before this attack and therefore avoid the torpedo problems plaguing us"..... I'm a bit confused by his readme; if one does not choose this patch option, are the stock failure settings then used or are stock plus some of Hsie's settings still used for torpedo failure/deep running.

Depends on your supermod.

If the supermod does not model any torpedo failures except for the base game ones, then you will only see failures from a bad impact angle, bad depth or from torpedoes breaking through waves and igniting.

it's not gamey at all, on the contrary .
First, if the sea was very rough you could hardly perform a torpedo attack at all . Second, if you would do it , it needed to be with a deep setting .
Also, you dont have to ask for the weather report, just make a guess based on what you see .

^True that. In addition, many of the more modern GUIs (such as ARB widegui) offer charts that show different wave heights.

Please keep in mind that even if you turn the failure model off, heavy storms will make the ships bounce quite significantly, so that your torpedo depth might be screwed anyway.

There are many KTBs that show torpedo misses or premature Dets due to weather. It is a reality.

Thanks for the replies. I run NYGM. I'm not saying in reality the weather didn't play a part. Although the game allows it, I don't do attacks when the seas are above 13 m/s anyway. Just a random number I picked.
My point is; at the time the Germans:

- at first, denied there was a torpedo problem.
- when acknowledged that there was, at first didn't know what it was.

and that by doing the weather report "fix", one is operating with the foreknowledge the actual captain's didn't have.
I.e., "If I get a weather report and set my torpedo depth accordingly, I can ahistorically bypass the above" at least in regards to depth keeping problems.
Or maybe I'm not understanding the patch correctly.

Hi John,

in the manual you can read how it works. If you set the torpedo deep enough you get the 'historical' failure rate. If you set it more shallow it becomes worse. Thus, you don't have any advantage due to hindsight.

Thanks for the reply LGN. I've read his manual many times on the subject, but your reply makes it much clearer now.
Also, know it's old news, but appreciate all the work you did for SH3.
