View Full Version : Handling heavy damage in your sub (TWoS)

In the TWoS doc, there is this nice but generic advice when your sub has incured severe damage and you are forced underwater:

" If severe flooding is present , try to maintain attitude of your U-boat by the use of manual diveplanes controls, compressed air and propulsion."

Is there any tutorial video that shows this advice in action ?
My manual diveplanes controls are working when my sub is not damaged (to stabilize my sub at depth below 150), but I never succeed using them with multiple severe damage (with or without flooding). If I command Blow Ballasts, then of course I enventually succeed to go to surface, but that's not what I want in an evasion scenario with lots of escorts. I want to stabilize my sub at some depth based on the equipment that is still working (diveplanes, pumps, electric engines, compressors), this may be difficult but should be possible somehow. The best I can do is stabilize my sub by going at flank speed to work against high depth pressure; but I'm sure there are better things to do.

I really would like to see a pertinent video about the sub behavior in SH5 and in such conditions (doesn't have to be WoS, but at least with TDW NewUIs interface).

Thank you to point me to any useful material!

Hi Hauangua,

thank you, but I have already watched this video, it shows only very little of the possible mechanics and only with an undamaged sub at extreme depth, it doesn't show the difference in the handling at different speeds, so you don't know if this is even a factor (which it should). And no voice unfortunately.

You can replay this vid in your game, but you cannot add sub damages in a single mission to start with.

There are a lot of videos about plotting tools, firing solutions etc. made by vid makers to play the 'professor', but not a single one for the most crucial part - sub damage handling. A pity, because it would quickly show the limitations of SH5 I think.

The problem is balancing your depth, versus being hunted.

It's almost impossible.

If you incur severe damage on the surface, diving will be a fatal outcome. I lost my last boat that way.

The objective, according to the U-Boat Commander Handbook, is "to see first! He who sees first wins."

You must not be detected at all until the moment the torpedo hits.

So how I play, if I can't sneak in, then wait for the opportunity! If I'm being deckgunned by a destroyer, I made a bad move.

You can play with the diveplanes and ballast all day, but you will never shake the escorts because of the noise.

Do not be detected!

I am thinking that it is very difficult to plan a video when your boat is under attack and has damage like flooding -- playing the game and have had come under attack before. I have lost a few boats. I'll sum it up. If you were able to maintain for a few days and all of your energy is depleted. that was a victory, even if you lost your boat. Making mistakes as described here will cause you to lose your boat. the use of Manuel dive planes do help in trying to keep the boat stable, that is until your battery is is all gone and your compressed air is nearly depleted. I had been attacked before by 3 swans and my gameplay was in that attack for 3 days - I managed to get her afloat and back to Lorient for repairs .. Just lucky .. but the next patrol in Operation drumbeat, I sank a tanker off the Florida coast. I got too prideful and made mistakes the lone VW destroyer hit my aft hull and my boat dropped aft backward and sank to the bottom- overconfidence can get your boat sank and not calculating moves will also have the same result.

Bstanko6, Captain AJ,

thank you for your insights !

I must admit and accept that there are mistakes not to do in SH5 in order not to lose your boat, yes. One of it is not being gunned on the surface by destroyers (I mis-judged their visual range capability at night once again...)

I will have to play some single missions to get better in handling these diveplanes and understand their relation with speed, compressed air usage etc.
And there is a single mission against 1 Liberty Cargo that is armed, so I can let it damage me, then dive and see if I can recover :)
Surely not the most enjoyable way to play SH5, but this 'training' should be instructive to show what's possible or not.

I wonder: If I chose standard speed on my dial (4 knots underwater), and I command only a slightly higher depth with my dial, then NO compressed air will be used? If my speed is too slow, then compressed air must be used to bring my sub to surface, right?

Thank you!

x... once your neutral buoyancy is established all you need is speed and dive plane input to keep the depth you command. Goes without saying practice with your boat using manual dive planes, Since this SH5, you don't have to mess with the negitive tank or closing vents to submerge, but you get to fiddle with the dive planes and speed inputs. when blowing compressed air. it is tied to blowing the water out of the negative buoyancy tank. when you are in attack flooding situation you may opt to blow ballast, but if your getting attacked by escorts blowing ballast and the flooding again will deplete your compressed air.. and you may broach without any control. also, TDW fx scenario in mission options is a good practice mission sub vs destroyers all that has been taught to fend off destroyers attacks. can certainly be practiced in that mission.
