View Full Version : Flack guns on the rear deck are pretty useless

In WoS, with my new campaign in the East Coast of England I notice that my rear deck mounted flak gun is mostly useless, with high waves the gunman will not stay on station and so not defend from planes.

I wish I had bridge-mounted flaks for my Type VIIC. Is there a way to get these at campaign start? When starting with the VIIB you can install them immediately but not so for the VIIC. Also is this History-based maybe?

And about high waves: My sub can go at 13 knots full speed (not flank speed) with winds at 15m/s and waves that submerge the entire bridge... Believing historical docs, your sub should go at 5-6 knots at most with such weather :)

Thanks,

Hi XS
It will not make any difference whether the gun is deck mounted or on a raised platform you still will not be able to use it.
Silent Hunter III also has this problem.

When the gun is raised you should be able to use it in conditions that is not possible when mounted on the deck anyway.

While I can understand a raised gun cannot be used in storm conditions 15 m/s there are conditions not allowed for in the game where moderate weather should not be a factor in being able to man the gun.

The higher up you are with a rolling boat the less accuracy you are going to have and I expect that but at least I would like the opportunity to try and defend myself and you know that even crash diving you are going to sustain damage anyway.

The ridiculous performance with the crew on the deck gun in more than a swell shows just how bad the settings are in the game.

Thank you Peter for your infos
I have now downloaded 2 videos from Stoianm explaining what to do against planes with the NewUIs installed (applies for TWoS), and it's much better to use the automation scripts to evade or to attack together with doing it yourself if you can. The video says not to use the crew on flak or deck gun if their ability is not well upgraded.

Also what you say above is pretty realistic because in bad weather I imagine it would be impossible in RL to use the gun, or even have men outside with cables attached, the aerea would not be stable at all... So I will have to get used to not always use flack guns (and instead crash-dive quickly), TWoS is just hyper-realistic also for that, and of course with game limitations still taking effect :)

Best greetings,
